Let’s talk about love

clementThe Second Reading at Mass today is one of those better known Scripture passages, St. Paul’s praise of the virtue of love, found in his First Letter to the Corinthians.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, …“. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to quote the rest of this passage as you will have certainly heard it at…every…single…wedding…you have ever attended 😉

It is my guess that St. Paul’s great hymn of love was the inspiration for a section of an epistle written by St. Clement of Rome at the end of the First Century. A few decades after St. Paul’s death, St. Clement wrote a letter to that same troublesome Corinthian congregation to address that community’s latest round of problems. Some young whipper-snappers had usurped control of the church and deposed their clergy. The Bishop of Rome wrote to them, urging the members of the church to obedience and to brotherly love.

This season as we read through “The Screwtape Letters”, I’m using the Annotated Edition by Paul McCusker. Over the course of his career, Mr. McCusker has also been involved with many of the C.S. Lewis projects with Focus On The Family, including a production of The Screwtape Letters starring Andy Serkis. In today’s episode I ask him about all these different projects.

About the speaker: Proclaiming the dignity of human life has been a lifelong passion for Cristina. Since her early childhood, she has been involved in the pro-life movement with her family at events such as prayer vigils, life chains, and much more. While attending The Pennsylvania State University, she served as president of Penn State Students for Life organization, leading the efforts to build the culture of life on campus. Upon graduation, Cristina attended the Emmanuel School of Mission in Rome, Italy, a mission organization sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Laity. She has spent the last decade in full time mission in the pro-life, chastity and new evangelization world.

In July of 2014, Cristina founded The Culture Project International. Her vision was to restore culture through the experience of virtue. Since its inception, The Culture Project has provided a mission program to more than 50 missionaries who have served 45 dioceses and invited over 100,000 students to reclaim sexual integrity and the meaning of life, thereby inviting our culture to be fully alive.

Cristina received Honorable Mention by Our Sunday Visitor as one of the Inspiring Catholics of 2012. In 2016, she was one of the recipients of the Students for Life of America, Defender of Life Award.

Catholic Bucket List #5: Retreat!

Catholic Bucket List #5: Go on a retreat

In modern society we are surrounded by noise and we fill our days with business and it’s extremely easy for God to be squeezed out of our day. This is one of the reasons why retreats are so needed. Setting aside a day, a weekend or week to reconnect with God and spend some time with him in prayer can be so good for reestablishing a healthy life balance.

No two retreats are ever the same and there are many different kinds of retreat which one may attend. I would suggest that everyone should go on a silent retreat at least once. I know that if you have never gone on one before, the thought of spending long periods in silence is a terrifying prospect, but believe me, by the end you’ll love it!

A couple of years ago I was actively discerning the priesthood and, as part of my discernment I went on a silent Ignatian Spiritual Exercises retreat given by the Miles Christi priests:

Finding time to get away on retreat can sometimes be difficult, especially if one has children. If so, you might like to take a 3 Minute Retreat!

The name “Jehovah”

Since I haven’t written about Jehovah Witnesses in a while, I thought that today I would address the origin of one of this group’s distinctive practices – exclusive use of the name “Jehovah”.

If you ever come across Jehovah’s Witnesses, either on the street or if they come to your door, it’s not unusual for them to emphasize that God’s name is “Jehovah” and the only appropriate name to be used in reference to Him. They might even go further and claim that other Christian groups have “hidden” the name of God despite, as we will see, that this word was first invented inside the Catholic Church.
