Why it pays to actually *read* the Vatican 2 documents…

I saw this a while back and it just made me cringe. The ladies in this video say so many things which make me sigh deeply.

Having said that, I think quite a few things that can be learned from this video.

Firstly, I think we can all learn something from the manner of the priest who, throughout the video, is calm, gentle and amiable. Personally, I think I would have had enough after five minutes.

Secondly, unlike his discussion partners, Fr. Ted clearly knows his stuff – Scripture, Vatican II documents and the Catechism and he explains the Church’s position clearly.

These are things we could all do with emulating.

UPDATE: The original video was broken, but I’ve now updated the post to point to a different video.

  • The video is now a private one thus can’t be watched….

  • God bless this priest. Good and patient man.

  • Geez, that is so annoying. In these sort of circumstances it is surely better to crush rather than faff around. Pick one thing they say, destroy it, make them look ridiculous, carry on. These crazies LIVE by vague language. Speak in any way vague and they will interpret it their way.

Surely shaking their hand and acting as if a civil conversation happened is a bad thing, particularly for them.. They are heretics. Surely throwing them off the grounds of the Church would have been more productive. They can take it back to their emotionalistic snake hole with them, but not to the people they were stopping and handing out leaflets.

    • If he had thrown them off Church grounds then every newspaper and TV would be braying about how the Catholic Church is a made up of heavy-handed, unintelligent meanies who can’t engage in civil debate.

Instead, by keeping his cool and asking some basic questions, Fr. Ted allowed the protesters to make themselves look utterly ridiculous.

The only thing I think I would have done differently if I had been in the priest’s shoes is that I would have tried to direct the conversation more.

I’d have asked a few basic questions to demonstrate the “Catholic” credentials of the protesters (or lack thereof):

      1. Can you affirm the Nicean Creed?
      2. Do you believe that the Catholic Church has authority which comes from Christ?

      • Also when you know that you are being filmed, then being open and accepting is a key part. Have to remember that a small part can make an interesting sound bite.

  • I’m actually confused. Who are these ladys?

They’re arguing that Church doctrines should be reconsidered because they disagree, and many others don’t like it???

    That’s what Protestantism is for.

  • Pilgrim,

BTW, I think He asked them #2, to which it sounded like they were saying yes, but only where “they” agree.

    • Yeah, but he let her answer slip by. If she doesn’t believe that the Church has authority, then what’s the point in her quoting any Vatican II document at all?
