"We are travellers…not yet in our native land" – St. Augustine

I cannot believe that “I shall not want” by Audrey Assad has not been on Music Mondays before!
I was on the phone this week with a friend and the Litany of Humility was mentioned, so when I got off the phone I went looking for the blog entry where I posted this song, one of my favourites from Audrey Assad, only to find that I had never shared here before!
Previously, I had posted the song from Danielle Rose, which is really beautiful and also which stays closer to the original text of the prayer, but here is the song by Audrey Assad which managed to work its way just that little bit deeper into my heart…
From the love of my own comfort
From the fear of having nothing
From a life of worldly passions
Deliver me O God
From the need to be understood
And from a need to be accepted
From the fear of being lonely
Deliver me O God
Deliver me O God
And I shall not want, no, I shall not want
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want
From the fear of serving others
Oh, and from the fear of death or trial
And from the fear of humility
Deliver me O God
Yes, deliver me O God

In today’s episode, Jack asks what a truly Christian society would look like. He’s going to say some things to upset people on the Right and people on the Left…

As noted in recent episodes of “The Eagle and Child”, my co-host Matt has a pretty dire knowledge of movies. For example, he has only recently been introduced to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. This Christmas was his first time watching It’s a wonderful life (or “Winter Wonderland” as he insisted on calling it…). Put simply, Matt has had some major flaws in his education…
Since one of the great Spiritual Works of Mercy is “Instructing the ignorant”, I could hardly call myself a good Christian if I didn’t attempt to remedy these serious deficiencies. So, with that, these are my “must-see” movies. The basic rule of thumb I’ve used is: would I judge someone if I found out they hadn’t seen these movies?

Rather than going through a chapter of “Mere Christianity” in this episode, today Matt and I are just going to be chatting about Christmas. You’ll get to hear about our favourite songs, the best presents we’ve received and our treasured Christmas memories. So sit back, pour yourself some eggnog and enjoy!

Hand on heart, there are some parts of the whole chastity movement which I find really annoying. For me, the chief offender here is “the modesty talk”. Now, to be clear, I have heard some excellent talks on modesty. However, I’ve also sat and listened to many which I thought were asinine, prudish and made me roll my eyes until I felt dizzy.
This week I came across this video by Emily Wilson where she expresses similar frustrations. She too gets irritated when the primary reason given for girls dressing modestly is to not lead men to lustful thoughts. She thinks that the primary reason for dressing modestly lies somewhere else…
Emily gets it. Emily dresses classily. Be like Emily.
