  • You’ve no clue how much I needed this quote today dear! Thank you for posting, i’ve never seen this one before 🙂

  • Great quote but it is not what Cowper exactly said. I see the gender-neutralising, ungrammatical hand of modernity in its revision. Saint (singular)… their (plural)…..? Naughty.

I can see why you (or your source) did it – it covers girls too! But Cowper actually used grammatical English: “Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees”.

The rant is over. Happy Christmas!

    • I do stuff like this just to annoy you, you know that right?

“Have you no words? Ah, think again,
Words flow apace when you complain,
      And fill your fellow-creature’s ear
With the sad tale of all your care.

Were half the breath thus vainly spent
      To heaven in supplication sent,
Your cheerful song would oftener be,
‘Hear what the Lord has done for me'”

      – William Cowper, Exhortation to Prayer (Book II, Hymn 60, page 549)
