That’s because he’s not Catholic (Shhhh!)
Great quote but it is not what Cowper exactly said. I see the gender-neutralising, ungrammatical hand of modernity in its revision. Saint (singular)… their (plural)…..? Naughty.
I can see why you (or your source) did it – it covers girls too! But Cowper actually used grammatical English: “Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees”.
