Show Notes

Pints Crossover

  • Today was a special crossover episode with David’s wife, Marie, from Pints With Chesterton. They were both sent an audiobook by Alan C. Duncan about C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton so they decided to interview him together!

Quote-of-the-week

  • The quote-of-the-week is from Lewis’ spiritual autobiography, Surprised By Joy, where he talks about the influence of Chesterton upon him…

It was here that I first read a volume of Chesterton’s essays. I had never heard of him and had no idea of what he stood for; nor can I quite understand why he made such an immediate conquest of me… In reading Chesterton, as in reading MacDonald, I did not know what I was letting myself in for. A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere…

Drink-of-the-week

  • For the drink-of-the-week, David was drinking Monkey Shoulder, a gift from his wife. Since Marie was five months pregnant, she was drinking water. Alan was drinking Bank Boss from Working Class Brewery.

Patreon Toast

  • The toast today was for Pints With Chesterton, Marie & Grace, and David’s unborn child

May you all have lives filled with wit and whimsy! Cheers!

Discussion Outline

Biography

  • Alan shared about his background, and told the story of how he began reading Lewis and Chesterton.

The Audiobook

  • Alan explained the genesis of his audiobook.
  • He also mentioned that it’s available in Kindle, although a print copy is forthcoming.

The Research

  • In the Preface of the audiobook you talk about how you did his research and Alan retold the story, how he discovered through an episode of Uncommon Sense with Nancy Brown (10:47-11:33) that he found out Lewis’ copies of Chesterton’s books and eventually found many of them at the Marion E Wade Center.
  • Alan’s wife saw a possible problem with his research, so he called upon Walter Hooper and former guest of the show, Dr. Charlie Starr for help.

The Contents

  • Alan spoke discussed the contents of Chapter 3, Goblins & Goodness, and the connection which both Lewis and Chesterton had to George MacDonald.
  • In Chapter 6, Appetite of Infancy, Alan mentioned the Chesterton puppet shows. When David and Marie were in England, they got to see many of these toys. In that chapter, he also quoted David’s favourite line from On Three Ways of Writing for Children:
  • Marie asked Alan about Lewis and Chesterton’s marriages, which he touched upon in Chapter 8, The Binding Bet of Marriage.
  • Lastly, Alan spoke about the contents of Chapter 10, Jokes as Well as Justice, which touched on Lewis’ letters to children and Chesterton’s humour when debating. He also presented his hypothesis about the interaction between Chesterton’s Orthodoxy and The Screwtape Letters.
  • Alan shared his main takeaway from doing this research and putting this audiobook together.
