Christians and MMA?

In the Early Church, Christians shunned the gladiatorial games. What about today? The Classical Theist has a thirty-minute podcast addressing the question: should Christians be involved in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to my sparing lesson 🙂

  • Good question. Since my conversion, I have trouble witnessing any harm to human beings. Although I don’t consider myself a pacifist.

Before my conversion, I was the kind of person who laughed when someone fell, no matter the age. No matter how they were hurt. But I no longer do. Now, I offer to help and make certain the person isn’t injured.

Now I wonder how anyone can sit around laughing at videos which show people being crushed, maimed and otherwise injured in accidents. I think the call them “fails”.

Buuuut, I have many Christian friends, both Protestant and Catholic, who absolutely love violent sports such as pro wrestling, MMA, boxing and habitually watch videos about all sorts of violence perpetrated on people, whether accidental or by design.

All that I do is remember that I have wood in my eye and bring to mind that these same people are loving and kind in every other respect.

But for me, it is a quandary.
