Sola Scriptura Syllogism

I was clearing out some old files on my harddrive today and came across I snippet I copied from somewhere on the Internet:

1. Sola Scriptura [implicitly] says everything we need to know that is necessary for our salvation comes from the Bible alone.

2. Knowing what Scriptures are inspired and what Scriptures are not inspired is necessary for our salvation.

3. Knowing what Scriptures are inspired and what Scriptures are not inspired cannot be known from the Bible.

4. Therefore, Sola Scriptura cannot be true.

I’m not sure, but this seems like something Patrick Vanderpool would write…

    Yup!

I think it works better like this:

    1) SS says all we need to know…
    2) SS cannot determine the canon…
    3) SS cannot provide all we need to know…

And then we all start to bleed from the ears and the house explodes!

    Note:
The Czar did not write the syllogism, but it does “seem like something” he would write!

  • love it, very well put! and Patrick’s version is also good to!

  • The New Testament books do tell us (sort of) which books should be a part of the Old. References made by Jesus and the writers of the New Testament books clearly point us to which books should be included. Just nothing points to which of the New should be included, where SS falls flat on its ugly face.

    • Hey Bill, welcome to Restless Pilgrim 🙂

Some Old Testament books are quoted or alluded to, but not all OT books, even the collection according to the Protestant canon. This also gets problematic for the Protestant canon when the New Testament appears to allude to a book of the Deuterocanon.
