Fiat Award 2019

The San Diego diocese will be giving me an award next month:

The San Diego Young Adult Office is pleased to announce David Bates as one of our FIAT AWARD recipients for 2018! David will be honored at the Annual Christmas Gala on December 15th.

David Bates was born in England where he worked as a software engineer. In his search for adventure, he moved to the United States over ten years ago, living in Washington DC, Seattle & finally settling in San Diego.

While David continues to work in IT, he is also a Catholic speaker, presenting at events around the country on Scripture, Church History & Evangelization. His talks can be found on his blog, RestlessPilgrim.net, & on the podcast Theology With An English Accent.

An active member of the San Diego Young Adult community since 2010, David has been involved in many different ministries at parish level, such as playing guitar for Our Lady of the Rosary Lifeteen Mass & leading the JP2 Group at St. John the Evangelist for several years. He is now a member of Holy Angels Byzantine Catholic Church where he is a choir member & cantor.

David has also served at Diocesan level, as a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council & the Young Adult Commission, the group which inaugurated many San Diego traditions including the Annual Diocesan Young Adult Mass. David maintains the SDYAM Podcast which contains recordings of all the San Diego Theology On Tap talks. He orchestrated the “Daughters of the King” gala events & helped organize retreats for the Goretti Group. For fun, David enjoys dancing & has taught salsa & swing lessons at many youth & young adult church events.

Recently David has been pouring most of his time into the podcast, “The Eagle and Child” where, with his co-host Matt, he unpacks the works of C.S. Lewis, the Christian apologist & author of the Chronicles of Narnia. David also hosts a monthly book club where Lewis’ works are discussed at a local coffee shop. In addition to leading monthly Taize prayer evenings and a running group, he also organizes, as part of The Finer Things Club, outings to the theatre, the Symphony & other cultural events. He is currently writing the final chapters of his 1st book, The Table of the Word, a guide to starting and leading a Parish Bible study.

My pastor put an announcement in the parish bulletin on Sunday. As you may guess, he has a sense of humo(u)r about my being English…

TOT: What does it mean to be a restless pilgrim?

Our three-part “Theology On Tap” series came to a conclusion tonight. The Associate Young Adult Director, Pamela Poe, had tasked me to give a talk which answered the question “What does it mean to be a restless pilgrim?”. In this presentation, I recount the story of my own faith journey, I describe the story of Salvation History as a pilgrimage, and I explain why we’re all restless pilgrims…

PWJ: Inaugural Episode

Eagle and Child

Today I’m very pleased to announce the launch of my latest podcast, “The Eagle and Child”.

If you live in San Diego, California, you may know that I’m part of a C.S. Lewis reading group called “The Eagle and Child”, named after the pub in which Lewis and “The Inklings” would regularly meet.

When I started the group, I had lots of messages from friends outside of San Diego asking how they could be part of this group. This podcast is, in part, my response to that.

Each week, my friend Matt and I will be working our way through a chapter of a C.S. Lewis book, beginning with “Mere Christianity”. So, if you’ve ever wanted to read this classic book, please pick up a copy from Amazon and join us in cyberspace for a thoughtful discussion and a beer!

“Is there life before marriage?”…the video

A few weeks ago I gave my presentation on “Is there life before marriage?” to the Goretti Group. The audio for that evening is available here, but I just saw that the video has been posted on the Goretti Group’s YouTube Channel:

If you would like the audio version of this presentation, you can download it from the feed on iTunes and Google Play.

You also might be interested to hear the discussion of some of the ideas raised in this talk between myself and Nessa on recent episodes of The Restless Heart podcast (Episode 4 and Episode 6). The podcast itself is available on iTunes and Google Play.

TOT: How to read the Bible for all its worth….

It has taken me a while, but I finally got around to editing the audio from my recent Theology On Tap session entitled “Reading the Bible for all its worth”. The audio quality wasn’t great, but I’ve cleaned it up the best I can. For the benefit of those who couldn’t attend my talk, I have created a YouTube video which plays the audio synchronized with my slides:

Extra Files

The video doesn’t contain the Q&A after the talk or the “Mega Bible Study” discussion which took place afterwards. The audio for these sections is available below:

In my talk I recommend looking for one thing at each Sunday Mass to take away for your spiritual nourishment during the rest of the week and I suggest writing this down in a Mass Journal. I have six Mass journals to give away!

Simply leave a comment below describing an insight from a recent talk, sermon or Bible study which touched you. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering, just something which you might record in your new Mass Journal! The first six comments will win.

TOT: Social Media – How to use it without being used by it

Faith on Fire“Faith on Fire” is a new initiative here in San Diego to help nurture the younger young adult community.

Like “Theology On Tap”, it is held at a bar or restaurant where there is a talk given by a speaker which is followed by Q&A and some discussion. However, unlike “Theology On Tap”, it is restricted to only those between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five.

As I mentioned the other day, this Tuesday I was drafted in at the last minute to cover for the speaker who was ill. Fr. Jacob was scheduled to speak on the topic:

“Social Media and Faith: How to use it without being used by it”

Since he couldn’t make it, I gave the talk instead. The presentation file is available for download here and the audio of the evening is available for download below:

Main Talk (Download)

I based part of my talk on my blog post Don’t Be Too Eager To Hit “Send” and The Mobile Challenge. At some point in the future I’ll hopefully do some other posts on the subject of Social Media to help consolidate my thoughts in this area.

(The book which gave away at the beginning of the Q&A time was The Church and New Media by Brandon Vogt)
