PWJ: S1E43 – AA – Joe Heschmeyer

Today I will be discussing theosis with Joe Heschmeyer from Holy Family School of Faith. He writes at Shameless Popery and is also on The Catholic Podcast. Earlier in the year, Joe came to San Diego and gave a presentation on the subject of theosis, so I invited him onto the podcast to help give us a clear Biblical basis for this doctrine which Lewis discussed at great length in Mere Christianity.

Early Christian Controversies that Protestantism Can’t Explain

This past Friday, Joe Heschmeyer was on Catholic Answer Live, the audio of which is available here. Joe was talking about one of my favourite subjects, Church History. In particular he was talking about how many of the early controversies in the Church can’t really be explained from within a Protestant framework.

For example, in the Early Church there was a breakaway group in AD 311 called the Donatists. These were rigorists who insisted that the sacraments administered by clergy who had been compromised during persecution were invalid. This was a major issue within the Church of the Early Fourth Century…but it’s an argument that makes no sense within most Protestant frameworks.

If you are interested, the article where he draws out these ideas is available below:

New Podcast: Catholic Bytes

My friend Joe is studying at the North American College in Rome, where he’s surrounded by brilliant English-speaking Catholics from around the globe: classmates, professors, and various luminaries who pass through their halls while doing more important things. Together with some of his classmates, they’ve decided to take advantage of this fact and create a regular Catholic podcast: interviewing experts in liturgy, theology, Church history, and several other fields.

The result is Catholic Bytes podcast (CatholicBytesPodcast.com): it’s designed to be frequent (once or twice a week), short (under 10 minutes), clear (we’ve got multiple reviewers doing quality control), and orthodox. Oh, and the first episode got released today…enjoy 🙂
