A little update from me…

MeSo, as you may have noticed, posts have once again started to appear here at Restless Pilgrim. After several grueling months, my project at work is now basically done.

I was meant to be on vacation this week, but I’ve been dragged back to my project, albeit half-time. As a result, the posts here thus far have been of the simple, short variety.

However, the good news is that I’m slowly chipping away at some longer, more substantial posts (to be tagged as featured). I’m hoping that some of these articles will be ready to post sometime next week.

There’s a lot of changes coming, both in my “real” life and also here on this blog. I’m really looking forward to sharing with you what’s there on the horizon…

Calming of the storm

Work is busy at the moment. In fact, “busy” doesn’t even come close to covering it. I don’t think I’ve ever been so stressed and overworked in all my career and it’s been like this since Easter.

As such, I’ll be taking a brief blogging sabbatical. Maybe see you in May?

Unveiled Judgement

Veil

A while back a friend posted a story and question on Facebook:

A husband and wife are attending a Tridentine Mass. During the consecration, the wife is tapped on the shoulder. A woman passes her a handwritten note that reads, “Shame on you for not covering your head while attending the sacred Mass” along with a cotton cloth of some sort and a pin.

How do you respond?

Needless to say, a very interesting Facebook discussion ensued…

The Zodiac and The Apostles

One of my friends recently shared a video on Facebook which is an excerpt from the notorious movie Zeitgeist. The narrator in the opening frames rather nicely summarizes its main argument:

“Now, probably the most obvious of all the astrological symbolism around Jesus regards the 12 disciples. They are simply the 12 constellations of the Zodiac, which Jesus, being the Sun, travels about with. In fact, the number 12 is replete throughout the Bible:

12 Tribes of Israel
12 Brothers of Joseph
12 Judges of Israel
12 Great Patriarchs
12 Old Testament Prophets
12 Princes of Israel
Jesus in Temple at 12

This text (the Bible) has more to do with astrology than anything else”

Like most things in the Zeitgeist movie, the claims can initially appear convincing until you do a little bit of thinking and a smidgen of research.

TEA: Worship In The Early Church (Drinks with Dominicans)

Worship

Last week I gave a talk on “Worship In The Early Church” at a local Seattle Young Adult event. I’ll be converting this talk into a series of posts later, but in case you wanted to have a listen, I recorded the first half of my talk on my phone:

Worship In The Early Church (Download)

In the latter portion of the talk we were going through some of the texts of the Early Church and the recording was a little too faint. I’ll put together a better recording at some point over the next few months.

Guest Post: Odd things you’ll never believe were made by Monks

Today’s post is a guest post by Robin Armit who works for Holy Art, a company which sells all kinds of religious gifts. All religious items have a wondrous story to tell, and Robin enjoys telling them…

BrewIt is common knowledge that monks and nuns have a long history of manufacturing many different kinds of products. Production has traditionally been restricted to fairly standard items such as jams, sweets, beers, wine, and even some medicinal goods. Some monasteries are particularly famous for the quality of their products. For example, Trappist monk beer is considered by many to be some of the best brew in the world.

However, not all monasteries have restricted themselves to the more traditional products. Over the years, some monastic communities have branched out into more unusual ventures. For example, would you like to buy some modern cosmetics and skin care products? Perhaps you might want to learn how to ski? Maybe you would like to liven up an evening with some tonic wine? While I wouldn’t recommend trying these all at the same time, but it might surprise you to know that Catholic monks can help you in each of these cases! In the article which follows you’ll learn more about these enterprising monks, as well as the products and services which they supply.
