• The Crucifix Prayer

    Blessed are you, Lord God,
    Father all-holy,
    for your boundless love
The tree, once the source of shame
    and death for humankind,
    has become the cross
    of our redemption and life.

When his hour had come to
    return to you in glory,
    the Lord Jesus,
Our King, our Priest, and our Teacher,
freely mounted the scaffold of the cross
and made it his royal throne,
his altar of sacrifice, his pulpit of truth.

    On the cross,
    lifted above the earth,
he triumphed over our age-old enemy.
    Cloaked in his own blood,
he drew all things to himself.

    On the cross,
    he opened out his arms
    and offered you his life;
the sacrifice of the New Law
    that gives to the sacraments
    their saving power.

    On the cross,
he proved what he had prophesied:
the grain of wheat must die
to bring forth an abundant harvest.

    Father,
we honour this cross as the sign
    of our redemption.
May we reap the harvest of salvation
planted in pain by Christ Jesus.
May our sins be nailed to his cross,
    the power of life released,
    pride conquered,
    and weakness turned to strength.

May the cross be our comfort in trouble,
our refuge in the face of danger,
    our safeguard on life’s journey
    until you welcome us to
    our heavenly home.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • The Prayer of St. Ephrem

    {Making a prostration}

O LORD, Master of my life,
grant that I may not be infected with the
    spirit of slothfulness and inquisitiveness,
with the spirit of ambition and vain talking.

    {Making a prostration}

Grant instead to me, your servant,
the spirit of purity and of humility,
the spirit of patience and neighborly love.

    {Making a third prostration}

    O Lord and King,
grant me the grace of being aware of my sins
and of not thinking evil of those of my brethren.
For you are blessed, now and ever, and forever.

    Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of Kings,
You have power over life and death.
You know what is secret and hidden,
and neither our thoughts nor our feelings
    are concealed from You.
    Cure me of duplicity;
I have done evil before You.
Now my life declines from day to day
    and my sins increase.
O Lord, God of souls and bodies,
You know the extreme frailty of my soul and my flesh.
Grant me strength in my weakness, O Lord,
and sustain me in my misery.
Give me a grateful soul that I may
never cease to recall Your benefits,
    O Lord most bountiful.
Be not mindful of my many sins,
but forgive me all my misdeeds.
O Lord, disdain not my prayer –
    the prayer of a wretched sinner;
sustain me with Your grace until the end,
that it may protect me as in the past.
    It is Your grace which has taught me wisdom;
blessed are they who follow her ways,
for they shall receive the crown of glory.
    In spite of my unworthiness,
I praise You and I glorify You,
O Lord, for Your mercy to me is without limit.
You have been my help and my protection.
May the name of Your majesty be praised forever.
To you, our God, be glory.
    Amen.

Music Monday: Love Moved First

This is the story of a runaway
With no way home and no way out
I threw the best of me away
I had my chance, it’s too late now
Too far gone and too ashamed
To think that You’d still know my name
But love refused to let my story end that way

You didn’t wait for me to find my way to You
I couldn’t cross that distance even if I wanted to
You came running after me
When anybody else would’ve turned and left me at my worst
Love moved first
Oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-ohh

What kind of grace, relentless grace
Would chase this rebel down
Crawl into this prisoner’s cage
Take my hand and pull me out
You knew I couldn’t make the change
So You became the change in me
And now I live to tell the story
Of the God who rescues

You didn’t wait for me to find my way to You
I couldn’t cross that distance even if I wanted to
You came running after me
When anybody else would’ve turned and left me at my worst
Love moved first

From the throne to the manger
From a manger to the grave
Your cross is the proof
Love made the first move
From a grave meant to keep You
To a stone rolled away
Your cross is the proof
Love made the first move
I remember where You found me
I’m amazed by where I stand
Your cross is the proof
That love made the first move

You didn’t wait for me to find my way to You
I couldn’t cross that distance even if I wanted to
You came running after me
When anybody else would’ve turned and left me at my worst
Love moved first
Oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-ohh
Love moved first

PWJ: S3E48 – Bonus – Mythopoeia

We’re extending “Tolkien Month” for just one more week! The hosts of The Tolkien Road invited me onto their show to talk about Mythopoeia, a poem which Tolkien wrote for Lewis following their late-night conversation which ultimately led to Lewis’ conversion.

This episode was posted on The Tolkien Road podcast a few weeks ago, but here it is again, but with some introductory commentary and a recitation of the poem itself.

Music Monday: Nobody

Why You ever chose me
Has always been a mystery
All my life, I’ve been told I belong
At the end of a line
With all the other Not-Quites
With all the Never-Get-It-Rights
But it turns out they are the ones You were looking for
All this time

‘Cause I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

Moses had stage fright
And David brought a rock to a sword fight
You picked twelve outsiders nobody would’ve chosen
And You changed the world
Well, the moral of the story is
Everybody’s got a purpose
So when I hear that devil start talking to me, saying
“Who do you think you are?” I say

I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me, You gave my heart a song to sing
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus

So let me go down, down, down in history
As another blood-bought faithful member of the family
And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus
So let me go down, down, down in history (Go down in history)
As another blood-bought faithful member of the family
(It’s all I ever wanna be) And if they all forget my name, well, that’s fine with me
I’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus, yeah

I’m just a nobody (Nobody)
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul (Oh, saved my, saved my soul)
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing (You gave me a song to sing)
I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus (Nobody but You, Lord)

I’m living for the world to see nobody but JesusI’m living for the world to see nobody but Jesus
