PWJ: S2E22 – AA – Louis Markos

Today I speak to Dr. Louis Markos, Professor in English at Houston Baptist University and author of the book Heaven and Hell: Visions of the Afterlife in the Western Poetic Tradition. In this work, Professor Markos devotes a chapter to The Great Divorce, as well as the book to which Lewis was responding, Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

Dr. Markos is a fount of knowledge and I learned so much in this interview. In the episode, Dr. Markos explains to us why the Pagan classics are important, how the Romantics reinterpreted earlier works to re-imagine good, evil, Heaven and Hell…

PWJ: S2E13 – TGD 9 – “Meeting George”

The chapter today is really the pivot of The Great Divorce. In it, we meet George MacDonald, a writer whom Lewis had read on earth, but who is now a Bright Spirit. MacDonald explains much to Jack, particularly concerning the troubling accusations raised by the Hard-Bitten Ghost.

Since this chapter is so rich, Matt and I decided to divide it up into two episodes, so you’ll have to come back next week for the concluding part…

Music Monday: Only Jesus

I have shared this song before, but I recently came across a lyric video version of it that I thought was worth sharing. This is “Only Jesus” by Casting Crowns:

Make it count, leave a mark, build a name for yourself
Dream your dreams, chase your heart, above all else
Make a name the world remembers
But all an empty world can sell is empty dreams
I got lost in the light but it was up to me
To make a name the world remembers
But Jesus is the only name to remember

And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

All the kingdoms built, all the trophies won
Will crumble into dust when it’s said and done
‘Cause all that really matters
Did I live the truth to the ones I love
Was my life the proof that there is only One
Whose name will last forever

Jesus is the only name x2
Jesus is the only name to remember
Jesus is the only name x2
Jesus is the only name to remember

Jesus is the only name to remember
I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
Only Jesus

PWJ: S1E42 – MC R – “Retrospective”

Having completed Mere Christianity, Matt and I take this episode to discuss the book as a whole, share some of our favourite parts, as well as what it was like to read a book “in public” over the course of a year…

Please send any objections, comments or questions, either via email through my website or tweet us @pintswithjack or message us via Instagram!
