At the end of this week I’m going to be in Los Angeles for the funeral of my friend Thomas, who died in a motorbike accident last Tuesday. It seems fitting, therefore, that today’s Music Monday song should come from the title track of Audrey Assad’s latest album, “Death, be not proud”:
Death, be not proud, though the whole world fear you: Mighty and dreadful you may seem, But death, be not proud, for your pride has failed you. You will not kill me.
Though you may dwell in plague and poison, You’re a slave to fate and desperate men, So death, if your sleep be the gates to Heaven, why your confidence?
When you will be no more, you will be no more, When you will be no more. Even death will die… x2
When it comes to the truth, we should not stay silent. However, we also should not condemn or speak evil. Instead we should, paraphrasing Ephesians 4:15, seek to “speak truth in love”. One of my favourite bands, Casting Crowns, recently released a new album that contains a song which encapsulates this sentiment perfectly, “Love you with the truth”:
For the longest time, I believed the lie That I’m not a strong enough believer To be the friend that can take your hand And lead you straight to Jesus I’m waiting on the preachers, singers, and the teachers To string the perfect words together But every single time I have to say goodbye I wonder will this be the last time
I can’t call myself your friend and walk away
When we love, we earn the right to speak the truth When we speak truth, we show the world we truly love I’m not pointing my finger, I’m holding out my hand I lay it all on the line now to see God save my friend Let my life and my words be the proof I’m gonna love you with the truth Gonna love you with the truth
Yes, God is love, but God is just And we are separated in our darkness So God let Him who knew no sin To become sin to make us right with Him Its not about religion or earning Gods forgiveness Or magic prayers or new behavior Its all about your heart, Hell meet you where you are Turn from your sin and trust in Christ as Lord
Jesus is the truth, the life, the way
How I’ve prayed for this moment, that you would finally see That God is more than religion, a stained-glass fantasy And how Ive prayed for the courage, for my silent faith to speak Or that God would just send you a better friend than me
I’ve been here before Now, here I am again Standing at the door Praying You’ll let me back in
To label me A prodigal would be Only scratching the surface Of who I’ve been known to be
Turn me around, pick me up Undo what I’ve become Bring me back to the place Of forgiveness and grace I need You, I need Your help I can’t do this myself You’re the only one Who can undo what I’ve become
I focused on the score But I could never win Trying to ignore A life of hiding my sin
Make every step lead me back to The sovereign way that You
The last few Music Mondays have all been of contemporary Christian music. Today we’re going to have a traditional song, The Salve Regina, but with a modern spin, courtesy of All Angels:
Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae; vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae. Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle. Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte. Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende. O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.
Translation:
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
I can’t believe it’s Monday already! Where did the weekend go? For me, the weekend was filled with fun as our Men’s Huddle headed to the mountains for some much needed relaxation time. So, to get things moving this week, I think we need a song to get the blood pumping… During the Easter period, Byzantine parishes such as mine constantly proclaim in the liturgy “Christ is risen! Indeed he is risen!”. We do this in several languages: English, Greek and Slavonic… So, in keeping with the liturgical season, here’s a really nice cover of Matt Maher’s song “Christ is risen”:
Let no one caught in sin remain Inside the lie of inward shame We fix our eyes upon the cross And run to him who showed great love And bled for us Freely you bled, for us
Christ is risen from the dead Trampling over death by death Come awake, come awake! Come and rise up from the grave!
Beneath the weight of all our sin You bow to none but heavens will No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown No burden great can hold you down In strength you reign Forever let your church proclaim
Oh death! Where is your sting? Oh hell! Where is your victory? Oh Church! Come stand in the light! Our God is not dead, he’s alive! he’s alive!
Christ is risen from the dead Trampling over death by death Come awake, come awake! Come and rise up from the grave Christ is risen from the dead We are one with him again Come awake, come awake! Come and rise up from the grave
I spent a good chunk of this weekend traveling to the East Coast, so I’m rather jet-lagged. Time for some morning pep! Here’s the song referred to by Fr. Jacob in his recent Theology On Tap talk, “Happiness” by Pharrell Williams:
Today’s Music Monday has a bonus track! My friend Vanida wrote “a little song about a Whovian girl who likes a Whovian guy”. If you don’t know what a “Whovian” is, well, this post is not for you…
I suggested that, for her next song, she should write one based on the Firefly series called “An Ode to Mal: Content”🙂
