St. Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians
The Epistle to the Philippians is my favourite work among the writing of St. Paul. The pages of this letter are filled to bursting with many beautiful, powerful and memorable lines. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the “life verse” of many Christians is found within its pages:
…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord…Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God – Philippians 1:6; 3:8; 4:6
If this letter could be summed up in a single word, I think it would be that fruit of the Holy Spirit, “joy”. That word appears, in some form or another, about sixteen times in the epistle’s four short chapters. Paul talks about having joy in the different situations of life: in prayer, in preaching, in hospitality, in unity and even in suffering. On every page, joy is explained, proclaimed and celebrated.
