He was born and grew up on Chicago\u2019s south side and is a recipient of The Frances White Ewbank Award, Asbury\u2019s highest honor for teaching. He has a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and a Master\u2019s degree from the University of Florida. Dr. Brown is an award-winning author and a frequent speaker at conferences and college campuses. In 2008, he was invited to teach one of the Summer Seminars held at The Kilns, and so for a week he slept in C. S. Lewis\u2019s bedroom &#8211; the one thing he has done that really impressed his mother! Dr. Brown is on record as holding the opinion that, despite the author\u2019s own words on the subject, Till We Have Faces is not Lewis\u2019s best book, a claim that some see as courageous and others see as just plain nuts. Lastly, Dr. Brown is the author of a book which we\u2019ll be talking about today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Life-Observed-Spiritual-Biography-Lewis\/dp\/1587433354\">A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C. S. Lewis<\/a>.<\/p><cite>Biographical information for Dr. Devin Brown<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chit-Chat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dr. Brown doesn&#8217;t think that <em>Till We Have Faces<\/em> is <strong>not<\/strong> Lewis\u2019 finest work &#8211; why is that?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quote-of-the-week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Today\u2019s quotation comes from a Lewis work which I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever quoted on the show before, <em>A Preface to Paradise Lost<\/em>\u2026<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The first qualification for judging any piece of workmanship, from a corkscrew to a cathedral, is to know what it is, what it was intended to do, and how it is meant to be used. After that has been discovered, the temperance reformer may decide that the corkscrew was made for a bad purpose, and the communist may think the same about the cathedral. But such questions come later. The first thing is to understand the object before you: as long as you think the corkscrew was meant for opening tins or the cathedral for entertaining tourists you can say nothing to the purpose about them.<\/p><cite>C.S. Lewis<\/a>. <ul><li>The Forward was written by Lewis\u2019 stepson, Douglas Gresham<\/li><li>Two endorsements on the back cover were from Walter Hooper and Michael Flaherty, co-founder and President of Walden Media<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>He mentioned the Alister McGrath books, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B008PX0GPI\/\" target=\"_blank\">C.S. Lewis &#8211; A Life<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Intellectual-World-C-S-Lewis\/dp\/047067279X\" target=\"_blank\">The Intellectual World of C.S. Lewis<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Book<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I chose the quotation from <em>A Preface to Paradise Lost<\/em> because whenever we talk about biographies, it\u2019s crucial to know the book\u2019s intended goal.&nbsp;I asked Dr. Brown what his motivation in writing this biography.<\/li><li>We discussed an article which Dr. Brown sent in anticipation of the interview: <a href=\"https:\/\/pillars.taylor.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1307&amp;context=inklings_forever\">The Perils, Pitfalls, and Pleasures of Writing a New Biography of Lewis<\/a>. <\/li><li>We discussed the research process he went through in preparing for his book.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jack\u2019s Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We spoke about Joy\/Sehnsuct.<\/li><li>The treatment length of different subjects varies considerably in <em>Surprised By Joy<\/em> &#8211; we spoke about why that might be.<\/li><li>We discussed the comment from fellow Inkling, Dr. Robert E.
