In the Second Reading St. Paul talks about the Second Coming of Christ. Finally, in the Gospel Reading Jesus combines both of these subjects and tells a parable in which he compares two different types of people: the wise who prepare for His coming and the foolish who do not.\u00a0The lesson is clear: Be wise &#8211; Be Ready<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ten-virgins.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Watch with the heart, watch with faith, watch with love, watch with charity, watch with good\u00a0works\u2026make ready the lamps, make sure they do not go out\u2026renew them with the inner oil of an\u00a0upright conscience; then shall the Bridegroom enfold you in the embrace of his love and bring you into\u00a0his banquet room, where your lamp can never be extinguished&#8221;<\/em> \u2013St. Augustine<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading I: Wisdom 6:12-16<\/h3>\n<p>Together with books such as Job and Proverbs, Wisdom falls into the category of (duh!) &#8220;Wisdom Literature&#8221;. The book is part of &#8220;The Deuterocanon&#8221;. To non-Catholics it is known as &#8220;The\u00a0Apocrypha&#8221; and rejected by them as Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>In the passage we hear this Sunday, Wisdom is personified as a woman. We are told that Wisdom is truly precious and we would all do well to seek her&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Resplendent and unfading is wisdom,\u00a0and she is readily perceived by those who love her,\u00a0and found by those who seek her.\u00a0She hastens to make herself known in anticipation of their desire;\u00a0Whoever watches for her at dawn shall not be disappointed,\u00a0for he shall find her sitting by his gate. For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence,\u00a0and whoever for her sake keeps vigil<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">shall quickly be free from care;\u00a0because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her,\u00a0and graciously appears to them in the ways,\u00a0and meets them with all solicitude.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you know about the Book of Wisdom?<\/li>\n<li>In what terms is Wisdom described?\u00a0Why do think this is?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think we should go about seeking Wisdom?<\/li>\n<li>What is the promise that is made in this text?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Resplendent and unfading is wisdom&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Wisdom is both wonderful and eternal.\u00a0In the figure of Wisdom we are to also see Jesus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;and she is readily perceived by those who love her,\u00a0and found by those who seek her. <em>She hastens to make herself known in anticipation of their desire.\u00a0<em>Whoever watches for her at dawn shall not be disappointed,\u00a0for he shall find her sitting by his gate&#8221;<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Wisdom is personified as a woman. To see her you must love her. To find her you must seek her. Those who seek her will not be disappointed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; James 1:5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Wisdom doesn&#8217;t appear to the lazy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;For taking thought of wisdom is the perfection of prudence,\u00a0and whoever for her sake keeps vigil\u00a0shall quickly be free from care;\u00a0because she makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her,\u00a0and graciously appears to them in the ways,\u00a0and meets them with all solicitude&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This describes the attitude and actions of those who seek wisdom. Wisdom is a gift which is bestowed upon those who seek her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Note that it describes those who <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;&#8230;for her sake keeps vigil&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. This state of readiness is the same as the one described in this week&#8217;s Gospel passage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 63: 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8<\/h3>\n<p>In this psalm David describes his search for the Lord and, like those who seek Wisdom, he finds\u00a0fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. (2b)\u00a0My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>O God, you are my God whom I seek;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>to see your power and your glory,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For your kindness is a greater good than life;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>my lips shall glorify you.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Thus will I bless you while I live;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will remember you upon my couch,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>and through the night-watches I will meditate on you:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>You are my help,<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With what kind of intensity does the psalmist wish for union with God?<\/li>\n<li>What is the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;sanctuary&#8221;<\/span><\/em> mentioned here?<\/li>\n<li>What is the psalmist&#8217;s response to his intimacy with the Lord?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;flesh pines and my soul thirsts&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is the kind of passion which we would normally associate with intimate romance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Primarily this means the sanctuary of the Temple, but in a broader sense could refer to sanctuary of Heaven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Thus will I bless you while I live&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is the hinge of the psalm. The first part of the psalm talks about the psalmist&#8217;s desire for intimacy and from this verse onwards the psalmist turns to praise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;&#8230;<em>and through the night-watches I will meditate on you&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Compare this with the watchfulness of the virgins in the Gospel and those in the First Reading who <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;keep vigil&#8221;<\/span><\/em> for Wisdom&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18<\/h3>\n<p>In our Second Readings we have been working our way through Paul&#8217;s first letter to the Church at Thessalonica. This week we come to the main point of this letter. The Thessalonians are worried because some in their community have died and they&#8217;re afraid that they will therefore miss Jesus&#8217; return&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/angel-trumpet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"236\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,\u00a0about those who have fallen asleep,\u00a0so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose,\u00a0so too will God, through Jesus,\u00a0bring with him those who have fallen asleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,\u00a0that we who are alive,\u00a0who are left until the coming of the Lord,\u00a0will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep.\u00a0For the Lord himself, with a word of command,\u00a0with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God,\u00a0will come down from heaven,\u00a0and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">will be caught up together with them in the clouds\u00a0to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Therefore, console one another with these words.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What does <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;fallen asleep&#8221;<\/span><\/em> mean?<\/li>\n<li>How does Paul tell them that they should react to death?<\/li>\n<li>What appears to be the concern of the Thessalonians?<\/li>\n<li>What is Paul&#8217;s response to this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,\u00a0about those who have fallen asleep,\u00a0so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Paul is talking here about those who have died. Paul is using a euphemism when describing them as having <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;fallen asleep&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Paul says that there should be a marked difference between how the world mourns and how Christians mourn. Christians can, of course, mourn, but it should have a different character to it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;For if we believe that Jesus died and rose,\u00a0so too will God, through Jesus,\u00a0bring with him those who have fallen asleep&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Thanks to Jesus, Christians look forward to resurrection and eternal life. Death is not the end. This is our <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;hope&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,\u00a0that we who are alive,\u00a0who are left until the coming of the Lord,\u00a0will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Those who have died haven&#8217;t missed out on the Second Coming of Jesus! Paul says that they&#8217;re going to wake up first!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;For the Lord himself, with a word of command,\u00a0with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God,\u00a0will come down from heaven,\u00a0and the dead in Christ will rise first&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The alarm clock will go off and the dead will rise&#8230; \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses use this verse in defense of their doctrine that Jesus is Michael the\u00a0Archangel\u00a0. Their logic is that, since Paul says that the Lord will come <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;with the voice of an archangel&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, he is saying that the Lord *is* an archangel. This is a rather flimsy interpretation to say the least.\u00a0The image that Paul is using here is that of a\u00a0triumphant\u00a0King returning to his city, proceeded by a herald (<em>&#8220;Make way for the king!&#8221;<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Also, there are also lots of other passages in the Bible which make it very clear that Jesus is *not* an Angel:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; John 1:1<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Jehovah Witnesses will often try and say that the Greek of this passage makes it clear that the Word as &#8220;a god&#8221; (i.e. angel) rather than &#8220;the God&#8221; (Jehovah). The short answer is &#8220;No, it doesn&#8217;t&#8221; \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">For to which of the angels did God ever say,\u00a0\u201cYou are my Son;\u00a0today I have become your Father\u201d<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 11px\">?\u00a0<\/span>Or again,\u00a0\u201cI will be his Father,\u00a0and he will be my Son\u201d?\u00a0And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,\u00a0\u201cLet all God\u2019s angels worship him.\u201d <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8211; Hebrews 1:5-6<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">You don&#8217;t worship angels. Worship is due to God alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Then we who are alive, who are left,\u00a0will be caught up together with them in the clouds\u00a0to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">After the dead have risen, those who are still alive will be gathered by the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">(FYI &#8211; this is the verse used by some non-Catholics to prove their doctrine of The Rapture)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Therefore, console one another with these words&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This teaching should be a source of comfort and hope.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13<\/h3>\n<p>This week we come to <em>&#8220;The parable of the ten virgins&#8221;<\/em>, a parable which poses the question: are you ready for the coming of the Lord? To understand this parable better, it helps to know that the Lectionary has skipped a section since last week. The omitted section concerned Jesus&#8217; warning of Jerusalem&#8217;s impending judgment, the allegorical extension of which is the Final Judgement at the end of time.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a title=\"Then End Is Nigh\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/05\/18\/then-end-is-nigh\/\">Harold Camping<\/a>, a couple of weeks ago the world was\u00a0<a title=\"The End is Nigh! (Again)\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/20\/the-end-is-nigh-again\/\">meant to end<\/a>. This week Jesus tells us how we are meant to respond to this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus told his disciples this parable:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. <\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">Five of them were foolish and five were wise. <\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">The foolish ones, when taking their lamps,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">brought no oil with them,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Since the bridegroom was long delayed,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">they all became drowsy and fell asleep.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">At midnight, there was a cry,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">The foolish ones said to the wise,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;Give us some of your oil,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">for our lamps are going out.&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">But the wise ones replied,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;No, for there may not be enough for us and you.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">While they went off to buy it,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">the bridegroom came<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em> <span style=\"color: #993300\">Then the door was locked.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Afterwards the other virgins came and said,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;Lord, Lord, open the door for us!&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">But he said in reply,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.&#8217;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Therefore, stay awake,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">for you know neither the day nor the hour.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the message of this parable?<\/li>\n<li>Who is the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;bridegroom&#8221;<\/span><\/em> in this passage? Who is the bride? Who are the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;virgins&#8221;<\/span><\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>What is the lesson of this story?<\/li>\n<li>How are we to keep our lamps ready?<\/li>\n<li>If you knew Jesus was going to return next week, what would you live differently?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The kingdom of heaven will be like&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Note here that Jesus is talking about some future event&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;&#8230;<em>who took their lamps&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Jewish weddings were usually held in the evening and at an unspecified time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The darkness here may well have symbolic meaning in the parable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7656\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/torches.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/torches.jpg 470w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/torches-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;&#8230;<em>ten virgins\u00a0who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">After the betrothal, the bridegroom would go away to prepare his house for his bride. Some months later, when the bridegroom&#8217;s father agreed that the house was ready, the bridegroom would return to escort his bride and her wedding party to the wedding feast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;bridegroom&#8221;<\/span><\/em> here is Jesus who is returning for his bride, the Church:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u201cIn that day,\u201d declares the LORD,\u00a0\u00a0\u201cyou will call me \u2018my husband\u2019; &#8230;\u00a0I will betroth you to me forever;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will betroth you in\u00a0righteousness and justice,\u00a0in\u00a0love and compassion&#8221;<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0Hosea 2:16-20<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The bridesmaids (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;ten virgins&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) represent those who are awaiting Jesus&#8217; return. They know that He is coming soon, but not exactly when&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;The understandings of all who have received the word of God are virgins. For such is the word of God, that of its purity it imparts to all, who by its teaching have departed from the worship of idols, and have through Christ drawn near to the worship of God; and have took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom and the bride. They take their lamps&#8230;and go forth out of the world and its errors&#8230;[to] meet the Savior, who is ever ready to come to enter with them that are worthy to His blessed bride the Church&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Origen<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;The lamps are the light of bright souls which shine forth in the sacrament of baptism&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Hilary<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><em>&#8220;Since the bridegroom was long delayed&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">We&#8217;re still waiting for Jesus&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><em>&#8220;&#8230;they all became drowsy and fell asleep&#8221;<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Death?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;trimmed their lamps&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is the cutting off the charred ends of the torches. This could also have symbolic meaning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>The foolish ones&#8230;brought no oil with them,\u00a0but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Here we have two types of people (recall the recent Gospel of the <a title=\"Sunday Lectionary: Jehovah Jireh\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/04\/jehovah-jireh\/\">Wedding Banquet<\/a>\u00a0and the <a title=\"Lectionary Notes July 17th\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/07\/12\/lectionary-notes-jul-17\/\">Wheat &amp; Tares<\/a>). Some are wise (see our First Reading) and others are foolish and found unprepared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Bridesmaids-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">So what&#8217;s going on here. This is what the Early Church Fathers had to say about the oil&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;The oil denotes charity, alms, and every aid rendered to the needy&#8230;<em>And He employs the character virgins in this parable to show, that though virginity be a great thing, yet if it be not accompanied by works of mercy, it shall be cast out with the adulterers<\/em>&#8220;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. John\u00a0Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/virgin-olive-oil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"328\" \/>&#8220;They that believe rightly, and live righteously, are likened to the five wise; they that profess the faith of Jesus, but prepare themselves not by good works to salvation, are likened to the five foolish&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Origen<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;the lamps which they carry in their hands are their works, of which it was said above, Let your works shine before men&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; St. Augustine<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;The oil is the fruit of good works, the vessels are the human bodies in whose inward parts the treasure of a good conscience is to be laid up.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Hilary<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;The virgins that have oil are they, that besides their faith, have the ornament of good works; they that have not oil, are they that seem to confess with like faith, but neglect the works of virtue&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Jerome<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I think we should consider the oil in light of the clear Scriptural injunctions of recent weeks:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">1. Love God<br \/>\n2. Love Neighbour<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>[While] the foolish ones&#8230;<\/em><em>went off to buy [oil],\u00a0the bridegroom came\u00a0and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">For their lack of\u00a0forethought, the foolish are left without oil and they miss the arrival of the bridegroom. Those who were <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;ready&#8221;<\/span><\/em> go with the bridegroom to the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;feast&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Therefore, stay awake,\u00a0for you know neither the day nor the hour.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is the message of this passage &#8211; remain ready. We do not know when the Second Coming will take place (despite what Harold Camping, Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses or any other groups say). We also don&#8217;t know the date of our own death.
