When I published it, I was reminded of a conversation I had with Jay about the Papacy.<\/p>\n<p>I have mentioned Jay on this blog before. He was a Protestant with whom I\u00a0dialogued for a few months several years ago. When speaking about the Pope, here&#8217;s what he had to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>\u201c&#8230;[the Pope] has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the names of God<\/span> such as Holy, Father, \u2026Vicar of the Son of God (which means in place of God)\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Jay<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, Jay asserted that Catholics give the Pope <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;the names of God&#8221;<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>When I replied to him I responded by working through each those names \u00a0in turn: <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;Holy&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;Father&#8221;<\/em><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;Vicar&#8221;<\/em><\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>1. Holy<\/strong><br \/>\nHave you never referred to someone you know as <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>\u201choly\u201d<\/em><\/span>? \u00a0We know St. Paul did&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;To God&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">holy people in Colossae<\/span>, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Colossians 1:2<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>2. Father<\/strong><br \/>\nWhy is there a problem in calling someone <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;Father&#8221;<\/em><\/span>? Paul refers to <em>himself<\/em> as a father,\u00a0so the practice seems pretty kosher to me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I became your father<\/span> through the gospel&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; 1 Corinthians 4:15<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>3. Vicar of the Son of God\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">*<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nA\u00a0vicar\u00a0is one who represents another and acts as a\u00a0steward, administering the position held in lieu of the true\u00a0sovereign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Earlier in our dialog you drew my attention to St. Paul&#8217;s Second Letter to the\u00a0Corinthians where it says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>We are therefore <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Christ&#8217;s ambassadors<\/span>, as though God were making <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">his appeal through us<\/span><\/em> &#8211; 2 Corinthians 5:20<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">You then went on to say that said\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>\u201cthe Word of God\u2026gives me the authority to be an ambassador for Jesus Christ\u201d<\/em><\/span>. What is an\u00a0ambassador? It&#8217;s one who represents his country and his sovereign.\u00a0If you don&#8217;t have a problem with being called an <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;ambassador&#8221;<\/em><\/span>,\u00a0what&#8217;s wrong with calling someone a <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><em>&#8220;vicar&#8221;<\/em><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">So what kind of authority does Jesus give His chief Apostle?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Jesus replied, \u201cBlessed are you, Simon son of Jonah&#8230;And I tell you that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you are Peter<\/span>, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the keys of the kingdom of heaven<\/span>; whatever you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bind on earth<\/span> will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bound in heaven<\/span>, and whatever you\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">loose on earth<\/span> will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">loosed in heaven<\/span>.\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Matthew 16:17-19<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>(To read more about the significance of the <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;keys of the kingdom&#8221;<\/span> see <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/08\/22\/the-promised-apology\/\">The Promised Apology<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">* Please Note:<\/span> The title\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">&#8220;Vicar of the Son of God&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Vicarius Filii Dei&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) isn&#8217;t actually a title of the Pope, although it is claimed to be so by some Protestants (particularly Seventh Day Adventists) in an attempt to link the Papacy with the <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Mark of the Beast&#8221;<\/em><\/span> found in the Book of Revelation. This title is a distortion of the Pope&#8217;s real title of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Vicar of Christ&#8221;<\/em><\/span> (<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Vicarius Christi&#8221;<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It is true that the Pope has many titles, but I do have a favourite. It&#8217;s a title that was used extensively by Pope Gregory I at the end of the Sixth and beginning of the Seventh Century. Gregory received a letter from John IV, the Patriarch of Constantinople, in which John tried to appropriate for himself the title <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Ecumenical Patriarch&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. Pope Gregory responded to this letter using for himself the title <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Servus Servorum Dei&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, which in English means <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Servant of the servants of God&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. This title has been in regular use by the Papacy since the Ninth Century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u00a0\u201cYou call me \u2018Teacher\u2019 and \u2018Lord,\u2019 and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another\u2019s feet.
