I’ve finally managed to get in contact with a local Imam! I’ll\u00a0be meeting him next week to start working my way through the\u00a0questions which arose from my reading of the first half of the\u00a0Qur’an.<\/p>\n

In preparation for meeting the Imam, I researched the appropriate Arabic greeting to give a Muslim. It turns out that, if you’re not Muslim yourself, the greeting which\u00a0should given is:<\/p>\n

“Assalamu alaykum”<\/span><\/p>\n

Phonetically, this is pronounced:<\/p>\n

“ass-sa-laam-muu ah-lay-kum”<\/span><\/p>\n

…and means:<\/p>\n

“Peace upon you”<\/span><\/p>\n

The response to this is:<\/p>\n

“Wa alaykuma asalaam”<\/span><\/p>\n

..which is pronounced:<\/p>\n

“wa ah-lay-kum as-sa-laam”<\/span><\/p>\n

…which means:<\/p>\n

“And peace upon you”<\/span><\/p>\n
