{"id":6138,"date":"2011-11-19T07:00:58","date_gmt":"2011-11-19T14:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=6138"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:03:20","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T22:03:20","slug":"the-tantrum-song","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/11\/19\/the-tantrum-song\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tantrum Song"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6140\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/benediction-jp2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"250\" \/>I&#8217;ve just got back home from my Holy Hour.\u00a0Despite being brought up a practising Catholic and being in Catholic education for the majority of my schooling, I somehow missed out on many quintessentially Catholic experiences, two of which are Adoration and Benediction.<\/p>\n<p>I remember an incident a few years ago when my girlfriend and I were asked to do the music at a healing Mass. We presented our song suggestions to the planning team and they were well received, but it was also requested that, at Benediction after Mass,\u00a0we play\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Tantum Ergo&#8221;<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At this point in my journey I was vaguely aware of what <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benediction#Benediction_of_the_Blessed_Sacrament\">Benediction<\/a> was, but neither of us were familiar with the hymn <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Tantum Ergo&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. We tried to &#8220;push back&#8221; on this suggestion and recommended other songs instead, ones with which we were more familiar. However, the planning team was adamant, we\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">had to<\/span> do <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Tantum Ergo&#8221;<\/em><\/span>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>After spending some time looking at the music we eventually concluded that it was <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;actually not too bad&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. However, because of the\u00a0unusually\u00a0strong reaction to our suggestion to play something else, that hymn was forever dubbed in our minds as <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;The <strong>Tantrum<\/strong> Song&#8221;<\/em><\/span>!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Tonight at Benediction we sang The Tantrum Song. I know many Catholics will be familiar with the Latin, but I&#8217;m sure that quite a few will not know the exact meaning of the words. Over recent years I&#8217;ve developed an increased liking for this song, but it wasn&#8217;t until I heard\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4vSM0z6Wsj8\">Matt Maher&#8217;s rendition<\/a>\u00a0that I truly began to fall in love with it.<\/p>\n<p>My favourite lyric is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble senses fail&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n(Literally<em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> &#8220;Let faith provide a supplement for the failure of the senses&#8221;<\/span><\/em>)<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is because of this line that I always take off my glasses during Adoration.
