The Gospel today on the\u00a0Byzantine Calendar was the healing of the woman with a haemorrhage:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28561\" class=\"text Mark-5-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, <\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28562\" class=\"text Mark-5-26\">and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.<span style=\"font-size: 12.1612px;line-height: 12.1612px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28563\" class=\"text Mark-5-27\">She had heard the reports about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28564\" class=\"text Mark-5-28\">For she said, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">If I touch even his garments, I shall be made well.<\/span>\u201d<span style=\"font-size: 12.1612px;line-height: 12.1612px\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-RSVCE-28565\" class=\"text Mark-5-29\"><em>And immediately the hemorrhage ceased; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.<\/em> &#8211; Mark 5:25-29<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As I heard the Scriptures proclaimed today I had an epiphany, seeing an Old Testament connection to this passage\u00a0which\u00a0I had not previously seen:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>And when [the priests]\u00a0go out into the outer court to the people, they shall put off the garments in which they have been ministering, and lay them in the holy chambers; and they shall put on other garments, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">lest they communicate holiness to the people with their garments<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Ezekiel 44:19<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, in the Old Covenant the garments of the priests where to be kept away from the rest of Israel, but what a wonderful reversal\u00a0we have with the New Covenant! Jesus, <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;our Great High Priest&#8221;<\/span>,\u00a0goes about among His flock, freely available to the people, with His vestments bringing healing and holiness.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a beautiful practice in the Eastern Churches which is inspired by today&#8217;s Gospel. I first saw it at my old Ruthenian parish, but I&#8217;m told that it&#8217;s more common in Melkite and Antiochian churches.
