{"id":598,"date":"2010-09-05T19:34:12","date_gmt":"2010-09-06T03:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thisrestlesspilgrim.wordpress.com\/?p=598"},"modified":"2016-01-15T17:30:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T00:30:35","slug":"st-basils-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2010\/09\/05\/st-basils-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Basil&#8217;s Priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/basil-the-great.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-608\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/basil-the-great.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/basil-the-great.jpg 245w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/basil-the-great-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a>The Gospel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/nab\/090510.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">this week<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Lk%2014:25-33&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 13:25-33<\/a>) was all about what it means to follow Christ and to have Him as Lord over your life, in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">first<\/span> place before any<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">thing<\/span> or any<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one<\/span>. \u00a0Doing this, as hard as it is, is also\u00a0immensely\u00a0freeing since it results in the things of life being put back into their proper order.<\/p>\n<p>As I was thinking about this, I was reminded of the story of St. Basil. \u00a0Now here was a man with his priorities straight! \u00a0Basil is known as the father of Oriental monasticism and a forerunner of\u00a0St. Benedict. Though his ascetic training Basil had very clear ideas about what was truly important in life. This clarity would be needed the day a\u00a0representative\u00a0from the Emperor came to visit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Emperor Valens was a resolute supporter of the Arians, those who said Jesus was created by and inferior to God the Father. The Emperor Valens had plantedArianism in other provinces of Asia Minor and came to Cappadocia withthe same aim. He sent the Prefect Modestus to Bishop Basil in order to convince him to join the Arians. \u00a0Modestus threatened Basil with ruin, exile, torture and even death if he didn&#8217;t fall in line. \u00a0Basil&#8217;s response was priceless:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;You threaten me with the confiscation of property, but it means nothing for the man who possesses nothing, unless you desire to receive this modest clothing and a few books which make up all my estate.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Exile? &#8211; but I do not know it, since I am not limited by space. If this ground on which I stand right now does not belong to me, then the whole earth belongs to God, Whose temporary guest I am.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Tortures? &#8211; but they do not have power&#8230;, except perhaps for the first blow, which you are free to make.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Death? &#8211; but it will be deliverance for me, since it will quickly bring me to God, for Whom I live and to a greater extent have died, and to Whom I hasten to come&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Tell the Emperor that neither violence nor persuasion will force me to accept a wrong teaching.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hahahah&#8230;.In your face Modestus! \u00a0Basil&#8217;s adamant negative response prompted Modestus to say that\u00a0no one had <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ever<\/span> spoken to him in such a way before.
