Following my spiritual director&#8217;s suggestion,\u00a0I spent that first week away on retreat. I spent my time at a monastery, dedicating the next two months of discernment to the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>The monastery I visited was a Benedictine monastery in Oregon. Having grown up around Benedictine monks, I felt very much at home.\u00a0It was wonderful having\u00a0the rhythm of my day guided\u00a0by the monastic office, even if the (very loud) bell rang for Vigils at 5:30am each day!<\/p>\n<p>It was really nice to have some time away and get\u00a0a complete change of scenery. I got plenty of rest and spent most of my time reading and writing. It was so good to quiet the noise inside and to have an opportunity collect\u00a0my thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>I got back Sunday evening and yesterday I spent planning, working out the\u00a0day-to-day routine of the months ahead&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>The Plan<\/h2>\n<p>In the mornings I&#8217;ll be going to Matins and Divine Liturgy and then I&#8217;ll repair to a coffee shop to work on <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2015\/08\/11\/book-announcement\/\">the book<\/a> for a couple of hours. I&#8217;ll try and go to a different coffee shop each day and I&#8217;m planning on keeping track of them on this map:<\/p>\n<div class=\"googlemaps\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=zGFVHnGBIB7I.kd-MuI2Axsro\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ll then come home and cook lunch. I do love cooking but normally I&#8217;m too rushed\/lazy\/impatient to do it. Therefore, during this sabbatical, I&#8217;m going to endeavor to expand my usual repertoire of dishes by following a recipe each day.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoons will begin with an hour of exploring new technologies which will then be followed by a long walk through one of Seattle&#8217;s many beautiful parks. I&#8217;ll listen to a lecture on my iPod, but I&#8217;ll always spend the last half an hour in peaceful silence. When I get back I&#8217;ll spend some time reading the mountain of books I&#8217;ve assembled.<\/p>\n<p>The evenings will be spent relaxing, working out and the odd Holy Hour.<\/p>\n<h2>This Week&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>This week, during my walks I will be listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/stpaulcenter.com\/studies\/audio-courses\/john-the-sacramental-gospel\" target=\"_blank\">John &#8211; The Sacramental Gospel<\/a> from St. Paul&#8217;s Center for Biblical Theology. The meals I will cook will include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/spicy-salmon-bok-choy-rice\" target=\"_blank\">Spicy Salmon with Bok Choy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/chicken-curry-hurry\" target=\"_blank\">Chicken Curry<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/salmon-cucumber-fennel-salad\" target=\"_blank\">Salmon With Creamy Cucumber-Fennel Salad<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/pasta-turkey-broccoli-00100000074825\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pasta With Turkey and Broccoli<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/southwestern-beef-chili-corn\" target=\"_blank\">Southwestern Beef Chili With Corn<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A week ago I began my sabbatical.
