{"id":560,"date":"2010-10-29T07:52:23","date_gmt":"2010-10-29T15:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thisrestlesspilgrim.wordpress.com\/?p=560"},"modified":"2021-02-01T12:00:10","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T19:00:10","slug":"catholic-simpsons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2010\/10\/29\/catholic-simpsons\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Frivolity: Catholic Simpsons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between <em>&#8220;The Simpsons&#8221;<\/em> and religion has always been a rather interesting one. \u00a0There was a bit of a hoopla in the press and blogsophere recently when an article in the Vatican newsletter, L&#8217;Osservatore Romano, had the headline\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/vaticancityandholysee\/8069472\/Homer-Simpson-is-a-true-Catholic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Homer and Bart are Catholics&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0It was a silly piece which caused, in my opinion, a lot of fuss about nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, the article was in reference to an analysis done by a certain Fr. Francesco Occhetta which concerned one of my favourite Simpsons\u00a0episodes:\u00a0<em>&#8220;The Father, the Son, and the Holy Guest Star&#8221;<\/em>, where Homer and Bart come into contact with the Catholic Church. \u00a0So, for this week&#8217;s &#8220;Friday Fivolity&#8221;, here are some of my favourite quotations from that episode&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Marge:<\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> &#8220;All of that standing, sitting and kneeling&#8230;It&#8217;s like &#8216;Simon Says&#8217; without a winner!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Marge:<\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Catholics can be a peculiar bunch. No birth control, no meat on Friday&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;No MEAT?! What do they eat, light bulbs?!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Face it, Marge. Catholics rule! We got Boston, South America, the good part of Ireland, and we&#8217;re makin&#8217; serious inroads in Mozambique, baby!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Marge:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Homer, you&#8217;ve been gone all night\u2014and you look like you accepted someone as your personal something. Were you at that Catholic Church?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Look, I know I was supposed to yell at that priest, but he&#8217;s so cool! He plays drums in a band with a bunch of other priests!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Marge:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;I knew they&#8217;d try to convert you! That&#8217;s what they do! Well, I&#8217;m not having another twelve kids.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Marge, no one&#8217;s saying twelve. Nine, ten, tops!&#8221; (Gets out a pamphlet entitled &#8216;Plop &#8217;til You Drop&#8217;)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Bart:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;This is a Catholic church. Chicks got no authority here&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Bart:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t you get it? It&#8217;s all Christianity, people! The little, stupid differences are nothing next to the big stupid similarities!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"> (after finishing confession) <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Woo-hoo, I&#8217;m clean! In your face, Lord!<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #444444\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fr. Sean:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Not yet, Mr. Simpson. I can only absolve you if you&#8217;re a Catholic&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Homer:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Uh-huh. And how do I join? Do I whale on some Unitarians?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fr. Sean:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Well, it&#8217;s a little harder than that.
