There isn&#8217;t much technical stuff to deal with in these passages. Instead, these readings are an opportunity for the group to share with one another their struggles in this area and to encourage one another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5351\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/two-paths.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/two-paths.jpg 500w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/two-paths-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;There are two ways,\u00a0one of life and one of death;\u00a0but a great difference between the two ways&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; The Didache, c. 65 AD<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Reading I:\u00a0Ezekiel 18:25-28<\/h3>\n<p>This section of Ezekiel comes from a longer section entitled <em>&#8220;The soul who sins will die&#8221;<\/em> where Ezekiel affirms personal responsibility for one&#8217;s own soul and\u00a0the Prophet outlines all the things that Israel must not do . This long section concludes with the passage below. God affirms that He is indeed just and that, in sinning, it is <em>Israel<\/em> that is disrupting the right order of things. However, God also affirms that He takes no pleasure in the destruction of sinners. He continually holds out His offer to those who will repent, that he will forgive their sin and spare their life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Thus says the LORD:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">You say, &#8220;The LORD&#8217;s way is not fair!&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Hear now, house of Israel:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">he does what is right and just,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">he shall preserve his life;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">he shall surely live, he shall not die.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Possible Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the complaint of the\u00a0Israelites?<\/li>\n<li>What is the Lord&#8217;s response through Ezekiel?<\/li>\n<li>How is God&#8217;s mercy demonstrated in this passage?<\/li>\n<li>What is the main exhortation of this Reading?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The LORD&#8217;s way is not fair!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">How childish does that sound? &#8220;Not fair!&#8221; The lack of fairness concerns the punishment of those who fall from grace and the forgiveness of those who repent of sin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;house of Israel&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Another term for the Children of Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It is sin that is the disruption and the distortion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;When someone virtuous turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies,\u00a0it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It is only in God&#8217;s mercy that he stays his hand, giving us opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Throughout the Old Testament, ever since the Fall, sin is associated with death. The spiritual sense of this passage shows us how sin can strike a mortal blow to a souls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed,\u00a0he does what is right and just,\u00a0he shall preserve his life;\u00a0since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed,\u00a0he shall surely live, he shall not die&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">In a passage that can sound rather negative, we must remember this final sentence. It is a promise of mercy to all who repent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14.<\/h3>\n<p>The psalm continues with the themes of this week of God&#8217;s mercy and compassion and His desire for us to walk in His way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>R. (6a)\u00a0Remember your mercies, O Lord.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">teach me your paths,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">guide me in your truth and teach me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">for you are God my savior.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Remember that your compassion, O LORD,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">and your love are from of old.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">in your kindness remember me,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">because of your goodness, O LORD.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Good and upright is the LORD;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">thus he shows sinners the way.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">He guides the humble to justice,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">and teaches the humble his way.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Possible Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the two main requests of the psalmist?<\/li>\n<li>In the final verse, what is the primary pre-condition for the Lord&#8217;s teaching?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Remember your mercies, O Lord&#8230;<em>Remember that your compassion, O LORD,\u00a0<\/em><em>and your love are from of old.<\/em>&#8220;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This is a common phrase in the psalms &#8211; an appeal to God to recall His loving kindness and take pity on His people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;<\/em>\u00a0<em>teach me your paths,<\/em>\u00a0<em>guide me in your truth and teach me,<\/em>\u00a0<em>for you are God my savior&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This first verse is a request to the Lord to make known His will so that we will know how to follow Him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The sins of my youth and my frailties remember not;<\/em>\u00a0<em>in your kindness remember me,<\/em>\u00a0<em>because of your goodness, O LORD&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">An appeal for forgiveness of past sins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><em>&#8220;Good and upright is the LORD;\u00a0<\/em><em>thus he shows sinners the way.\u00a0<\/em><em>He guides the humble to justice, \u00a0<\/em><em>and teaches the humble his way&#8221;<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It is because of the Lord&#8217;s goodness that He has mercy on sinners who turn to Him. It is only a humble heart that can be taught which is why the sin of pride is so dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: Philippians 2:1-11<\/h3>\n<p>In this section of the letter to the Philippians Paul encourages that church to humility and mutual service. To illustrate this, he uses Christ as his example, quoting the words of an early Christian hymn, describing how Jesus took <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;the form of a slave&#8221; <\/span><\/em>and<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> &#8220;humbled himself&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Brothers and sisters: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.\u00a0Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness;\u00a0and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.\u00a0Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,\u00a0that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,\u00a0and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Possible Questions:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>What is Paul&#8217;s exhortation in the first paragraph? What motivation does he give for this?<\/li>\n<li>What example does Paul use in the second paragraph to illustrate his point in the first paragraph?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I provide an extensive commentary of this passage <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/notes\/epistle-to-the-philippians\/chapter-2-session-1\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32<\/h3>\n<p>This parable is in response to an encounter with the chief priests and the elders in the Temple area, a week before the Passion. They came to Jesus and demanded to know the source of His authority.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said that he&#8217;d answer the question if they tell him whether John the Baptist&#8217;s baptism was from heaven or from men. They could not answer this question since, if they said <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;from heaven&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, they knew Jesus would ask them why they didn&#8217;t believe John, but if they say <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;from men&#8221;<\/span><\/em> they&#8217;d become unpopular with the people since they held John in great esteem and called him a prophet.<\/p>\n<p>Following this discourse, Jesus did what He often did &#8211; told a parable. In this parable, the first son represents the sinners who repented at the preaching of John and followed the will of the Father, but the second group represent the chief priests and elders who ignored John&#8217;s message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;What is your opinion?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">A man had two sons.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">He came to the first and said,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8216;Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.&#8217;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">He said in reply, &#8216;I will not, &#8216;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">but afterwards changed his mind and went.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">The man came to the other son and gave the same order.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">He said in reply, &#8216;Yes, sir, &#8216;but did not go.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Which of the two did his father&#8217;s will?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">They answered, &#8220;The first.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus said to them, &#8220;Amen, I say to you,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">tax collectors and prostitutes<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">are entering the kingdom of God before you.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">When John came to you in the way of righteousness,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">you did not believe him;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">but tax collectors and prostitutes did.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Yet even when you saw that,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">you did not later change your minds and believe him.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Possible Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whom do you think is represented by the father in this parable?<\/li>\n<li>Whom do you think is represented in the first son\u00a0in this parable?<\/li>\n<li>Whom do you think is represented in the second son\u00a0in this parable?<\/li>\n<li>What virtue is exhorted in this reading?<\/li>\n<li>Which son do you more closely relate to in this parable?<\/li>\n<li>Do you regard any particular group as inferior?<\/li>\n<li>What does your &#8220;yes&#8221; to God look like? How do we apply it to our lives?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/vineyard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5349\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/vineyard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/vineyard.jpg 550w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/vineyard-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It is important to understand to whom Jesus is speaking this parable, since later in the passage he&#8217;ll say that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;A man had two sons&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The man here can represent John the Baptist, as well as Jesus and the Father.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;He came to the first and said,\u00a0&#8216;Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.&#8217;\u00a0He said in reply, &#8216;I will not, &#8216;\u00a0but afterwards changed his mind and went. &#8220;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This represents those who, although initially resistant to the will of God eventually humble themselves, repent and do His will. As we saw last week, the vineyard is a biblical metaphor for God&#8217;s people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The man came to the other son and gave the same order.\u00a0He said in reply, &#8216;Yes, sir, &#8216;but did not go&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">This represents those who pay lip service to God&#8217;s will, but don&#8217;t actually do it. They talk the talk, but don&#8217;t walk the walk, lacking the\u00a0\u201cobedience of faith\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%201:5&amp;version=NIV\">Romans 1:5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;But when [John] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: \u201cYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?\u00a0Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.\u00a0And do not think you can say to yourselves, \u2018We have Abraham as our father.\u2019 I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.\u00a0The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;tax collectors and prostitutes\u00a0are entering the kingdom of God before you&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8230;because they were not so prideful. They humbled themselves before God in response to John&#8217;s preaching.
