{"id":49827,"date":"2014-11-25T09:07:45","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T16:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=49827"},"modified":"2015-03-19T22:27:07","modified_gmt":"2015-03-20T05:27:07","slug":"what-the-q","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2014\/11\/25\/what-the-q\/","title":{"rendered":"What the Q?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Q_source\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Q&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0is the name given by theologians and historians to\u00a0the hypothetical document which would account\u00a0for the common material found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, but which are not found in Mark:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-49829\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Two-Source.png\" alt=\"Two Source\" width=\"250\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Two-Source.png 400w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Two-Source-256x300.png 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although I think the existence of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Q_source\" target=\"_blank\">the Q source<\/a> is a distinct possibility, I&#8217;ll admit that I&#8217;ve grown very weary with all the modern scholarship which takes its existence as Gospel (so to speak) and who seem to enjoy developing more and more elaborate theories\u00a0concerning its existence.<\/p>\n<p>Given this, I simply have to share the following quotation which <a href=\"http:\/\/catholicdefense.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Heschmeyer<\/a> put up a\u00a0quotation on Facebook yesterday:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cI must admit, though, that the affirmation of Q\u2019s existence comes close to exhausting my ability to believe in h<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">ypothetical entities. I find myself increasingly skeptical as more refined and detailed theories about Q\u2019s extent, wording, community, geographical setting, stages of tradition and redaction, and coherent theology are proposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><em><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">I cannot help thinking that biblical scholarship would be greatly advanced if every morning all exegetes would repeat as a mantra:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">\u201cQ is a hypothetical document whose exact extension, wording, originating community, strata, and stages of redaction cannot be known.\u201d This daily devotion might save us flights of fancy that are destined, in my view, to end in skepticism.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8211; J.P.
