{"id":4774,"date":"2011-08-28T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-28T22:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=4774"},"modified":"2015-03-19T14:49:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T21:49:41","slug":"halo-letters-in-icons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/08\/28\/halo-letters-in-icons\/","title":{"rendered":"You say goodbye and I say halo&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve written anything about icons&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Today I was at the Divine Liturgy with a small contingent from Good Shepherd and it prompted me to write a post explaining the letters which often appear on Christ&#8217;s halo:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fineartamerica.com\/featured\/1-christ-pantokrator-julia-bridget-hayes.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4775\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/pantokrator.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/pantokrator.jpg 489w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/pantokrator-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In iconography, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calledtocommunion.com\/2009\/11\/where-did-you-get-that-halo\/\">halos<\/a> of angels and Saints are typically filled with gold. In icons of Christ, however, there is also a cross superimposed upon the halo. In the icon\u00a0above, known as the &#8220;Pantokrator&#8221; (&#8220;Almighty&#8221;) ,\u00a0you can clearly see this. Only three arms of the cross are visible, each symbolizing a member of the Trinity. Now, at the edge of each arm is a Greek letter:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u038c = The letter &#8220;omicron&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u03ce = The letter &#8220;omega&#8221;<br \/>\n\u039d = The letter &#8220;nu&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The Greek letters written on icons are often abbreviations, such as <a title=\"Cracking the code\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/05\/03\/ic-xc\/\">IC XC<\/a>. However, in this case, those Greek letters\u00a0make up two words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchgodsword.org\/isb\/view.cgi?number=3588\" target=\"_blank\">\u038c<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchgodsword.org\/isb\/view.cgi?number=5607\" target=\"_blank\">\u03ce\u039d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These words are pronounced &#8220;ho&#8221; (as in &#8220;hot&#8221;) and &#8220;on&#8221;. The phrase &#8220;ho on&#8221; means &#8220;the [Who] is&#8221; and it&#8217;s a phrase you find in the New Testament:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;I am the Alpha and the Omega,&#8221; says the Lord God, &#8220;<strong>who is<\/strong> and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.&#8221; &#8211; Revelation 1:8<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;as well as in the Greek Translation (the Septuagint) of the Old Testament:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>God said to Moses, &#8220;I AM <strong>WHO I AM<\/strong> &#8220;; and He said, &#8220;Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, &#8216;<strong>I AM<\/strong> has sent me to you.&#8217; &#8221; &#8211; Exodus 3:14<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, placing \u038c \u03ce\u039d on Christ&#8217;s halo is a declaration of His divinity and His eternal existence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HBZ8ulc5NTg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">For more information on halos, please check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calledtocommunion.com\/2009\/11\/where-did-you-get-that-halo\/\">J.
