A few months ago he suffered a stroke and we\u00a0heard recently that his condition had seriously deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-45564 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Bishop-Flores.jpg\" alt=\"Bishop Flores\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Bishop-Flores.jpg 620w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Bishop-Flores-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council around the time Bishop Flores took over the care of San Diego Diocese from Bishop Brom.\u00a0Through these Council meetings, as well as through various diocesan events, I got to know this shepherd of Christ reasonably well. He was kind and had a great sense of joy, as well as certainly having\u00a0some fire in his bones! He was extremely supportive of the Young Adult Catholic Community here in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 7:30pm the Young Adult Community in San Diego will be praying a rosary for Bishop Flores. Please join us in prayer, even if you can&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1478857659030771\/\" target=\"_blank\">make it to the church<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My favourite memory of the Bishop was at the Rite of Election this year. My roommate\u00a0<a title=\"Why Easter was particularly amazing this year\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2014\/04\/23\/why-this-easter-was-particularly-amazing\/\">Nathan<\/a>\u00a0was entering the Church and I was (for my sins) his sponsor. As we stood with the other candidates and catechumens having a group photograph, Nathan whispered to me <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;I want to high five the bishop&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. As Nathan\u00a0is\u00a0always a bad influence on me, I whispered back <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Do it!&#8221;<\/em>. Nathan quickly made his way down to the bishop. Oh, it was the highest of fives&#8230; \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_lEedyxkbNo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now that Bishop Flores has gone to be with the Lord, I can&#8217;t help but think of the words of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the young Bishop Polycarp at the beginning of the Second Century:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">The times call for you, as pilots do for the winds, and as one tossed with tempest seeks<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> for the haven, so that both you and those under your care may attain to God. Be sober<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\"> as God\u2019s athlete: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the prize set before you is immortality and eternal life<\/span><\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> &#8211; St. Ignatius of Antioch to St. Polycarp<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You have run your race, Bishop Flores.
