Until very recently, we would have celebrated the Feast of the Ascension, but in recent years the Feast has been moved from this Thursday to the nearest Sunday. I&#8217;m not such a fan of this change since it obscures the origin of the &#8220;novena&#8221;, the Catholic practice of\u00a0nine days of prayer\u00a0for a particular intention.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35196 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pentecost.jpg\" alt=\"Pentecost\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pentecost.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Pentecost-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Novenas are\u00a0associated with the period of time between the Ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31095\" class=\"text Acts-1-8\">[Jesus said] &#8220;But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar\u2032ia and to the end of the earth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31096\" class=\"text Acts-1-9\">And when he had said this, as they were looking on, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he was lifted up<\/span>, and a cloud took him out of their sight&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span class=\"text Acts-1-12\">Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet&#8230;<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31100\" class=\"text Acts-1-13\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u00a0<\/span>and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying&#8230;<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31101\" class=\"text Acts-1-14\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer<\/span>, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span class=\"text Acts-2-1\">When <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the day of Pentecost<\/span> had come, they were all together in one place.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31115\" class=\"text Acts-2-2\">And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31116\" class=\"text Acts-2-3\">And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-31117\" class=\"text Acts-2-4\">And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u00a0&#8211; Acts 1:8-9,12-14;2:1-4<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a novena to pray between now and Pentecost, my new favourite is the novena to one of my favourites,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frassatiusa.org\/documents\/Novena%20to%20BPGF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Pier Giorgio Frassati<\/a>.\u00a0<em><strong>What&#8217;s you&#8217;re favourite Novena?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I went to Mass.
