It is known as <em>Alexamenos Graffito<\/em> and, as the name suggests, it&#8217;s a piece of graffiti. It was found near Rome&#8217;s\u00a0Palatine Hill and is dated sometime between 1st and 3rd Century:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-42723\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AlexGraffito.png\" alt=\"AlexGraffito\" width=\"500\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AlexGraffito.png 900w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AlexGraffito-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/AlexGraffito-769x1024.png 769w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The text underneath the picture says in Greek\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Alexamenos worships [his] God&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. The picture itself shows Jesus on a cross with a donkey&#8217;s head, with another person on the left\u00a0(presumably <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Alexamenos&#8221;<\/em><\/span>) raising his hand in worship. It&#8217;s clear that this was written by someone who knew Alexamenos and wanted to mock him\u00a0and his Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">But why is Christ drawn with a donkey&#8217;s head? Well, in the early centuries it was a commonly asserted by Pagans that Christians worshipped donkeys, a practice known as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Onolatry\" target=\"_blank\">Onolatry<\/a>.
