Every Sunday in the Liturgy of the Hours<\/a> Night Prayer we pray the following:<\/p>\n

For he will free you from the hunter\u2019s snare,<\/em><\/span>
\n from the voice of the slanderer.<\/em><\/span>
\n He will shade you with his wings,<\/em><\/span><\/span>
\n you will hide underneath his wings<\/span>.<\/em>\u00a0– Psalm 90<\/span><\/p>\n

I recently came across some words of popular Anglican\u00a0theologian\u00a0NT Wright which I recall every time I pray this psalm:<\/p>\n

He was writing about a passage in St. Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus uses similar imagery:<\/p>\n

\u201cJerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,\u00a0how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings<\/span>,\u00a0and you were not willing…”<\/em>\u00a0–\u00a0Matthew 23:37-38<\/span><\/p>\n

Here was his commentary:<\/p>\n

“[The image] is of a farmyard fire<\/span>; the hen gathers her chicks under her wings<\/span>, and, when the fire has run its course, there will be found a dead hen<\/span>, scorched and blackened, but with live chicks under her wing<\/span>.
