Last week we looked at the opening verses of Genesis. It often goes unnoticed what God is actually doing\u00a0in the account of creation found\u00a0in the opening verses. Today I&#8217;d like to do a short post covering the first part of our discussion and speak about\u00a0the literary structure of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=genesis+1&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">the first chapter of Genesis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25170 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaos.jpg\" alt=\"Chaos\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaos.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Chaos-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Chapter 1, verse 2, after affirming that <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;God created the heavens and the earth&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, the author says that\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;the earth was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">formless<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">void<\/span>&#8221; <\/em><\/span>(Hebrew: <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;tohu wabohu&#8221;<\/em><\/span>). The rest of the chapter sets about\u00a0explaining how God solved both of these problems&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Problem #1: Formless<\/h2>\n<p>On the first three days, God solves the problem of <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;formless&#8221;<\/em><\/span>-ness by creating time, space and habitat:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #1:<\/strong> God creates <strong><em>time<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Let there be light\u201d&#8230;. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #2:<\/strong> God creates <strong><em>space<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">God made the firmament and separated the waters&#8230; And God called the firmament Heaven<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #3:<\/strong> God creates <strong><em>habitat<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;let the dry land appear.\u201d The earth brought forth vegetation&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If we were to imagine this creation account as a house building project, we would now have the framework of the house built, together with the rooms. However, there&#8217;s a problem. The rooms are all empty! So, although the problem of formlessness is now resolved, things are still\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;void&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. So, how does this problem get fixed?<\/p>\n<h2>Problem #2: Void<\/h2>\n<p>Over the subsequent three days, the Lord solves the <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;void&#8221;<\/em><\/span> problem by populating each of the realms created in the first three days:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #4:<\/strong> God creates <strong><em>sun, moon &amp; stars<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">God made the two great lights&#8230;; he made the stars also<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #5:<\/strong> God creates <strong><em>fish and birds<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Day #6:<\/strong> God creates land <strong><em>animals and man<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Let the earth bring forth living creatures&#8230;\u00a0So God created man in his own image&#8230;; male and female he created them<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We thus now have rulers for each of the realms. The earth is no longer <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;formless&#8221;<\/em><\/span> or <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;void&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. Chaos has now been transformed into cosmos!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cosmos.png\" alt=\"Cosmos\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>God then completes his building project, by crowning it with the Sabbath (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+2%3A1-3&amp;version=RSVCE\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 2:1-3<\/a>). There is now a habitat for humanity; our house is now built!
