In preparation for that, I decided to compile a list of my favourite things to do in my home country&#8217;s capital city&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47198\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/City_London_Skyline.jpg\" alt=\"Skyline\" width=\"800\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/City_London_Skyline.jpg 797w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/City_London_Skyline-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Churches<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.westminster-abbey.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Westminster\u00a0Abbey<\/a><br \/>\n<i>Personally, I wasn&#8217;t that impressed with the Abbey &#8211; it&#8217;s a bit of a\u00a0mausoleum. However, i&#8217;d thoroughly recommend going to Evensong at 5pm. It&#8217;s free and the choir are superb.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/westminstercathedral.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Westminster Cathedral<\/a><br \/>\n<em>This is the Catholic Cathedral. Saturday night Vigil Mass\u00a0is great. Sunday morning is a zoo, full of tourists<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpauls.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Paul&#8217;s Cathedral<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Architecturally gorgeous. The surrounding streets have cool names, like Pater Noster Square and Ave Maria Lane since historically these were the areas where jewelers made rosaries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Martin-in-the-fields<\/a><br \/>\n<em>There are lots of candle-lit concerts here and the music is top-notch<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Very London<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyde_Park,_London\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyde Park<\/a><br \/>\n<em>This is our version of Central Park. It&#8217;s a lovely place for a stroll.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Speakers%27_Corner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speaker&#8217;s Corner<\/a><br \/>\n<em>At the corner of Hyde Park, especially on Sundays, there is an active debate scene. Go argue with Christians, atheists, Muslims and Marxists!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.camdenmarket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Camden Market<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Biggest hippy fest you&#8217;ll ever see<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portobelloroad.co.uk\/the-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Notting Hill Market<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Stay on the look-out for Hugh Grant<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrp.org.uk\/TowerOfLondon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Tower of London<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Lots of swords and armour to look at and the Norman Chapel in the white tower is probably one of my favourite chapels of all time. The Yeoman of the Guard do great tours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tower_Hill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tower Hill<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Near to the Tower of London is Tower Hill. I used to walk through here every day when I was in London and it&#8217;s the site of the execution of both St Thomas More\u00a0and St. John Fisher. It&#8217;s also the meeting point for many of the &#8220;Ripper&#8221; tours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoneye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Eye<\/a><br \/>\n<em>A great way to see a lot of London<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/visit\/tate-modern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Tate Modern<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Some of the dumbest &#8220;art&#8221; I&#8217;ve ever seen. Good for a laugh<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitbricklane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brick Lane Curry<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Several blocks of some of the best curry London has to offer. Since there are so many restaurants, the competition is fierce, with lots of touts about, offering you free beer and their firstborn&#8217;s hand in marriage if you come and visit their uncle&#8217;s\u00a0restaurant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/skygarden.london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sky Garden<\/a><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ve never been myself, but my friends say it&#8217;s good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Culture<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Gallery<\/a><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ve been around the world and seen a lot of galleries and this is still one of the best. Plus, you get to play with the stone lions outside \ud83d\ude42<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Museum<\/a><br \/>\n<em>A little sparse in places, but still cool, particularly since they have the Rosetta Stone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imperial War Museum<\/a><br \/>\n<em>My favourite school trip<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural History Museum<\/a><br \/>\n<em>My earliest childhood memory of London. Remember, the diplodocus in the main hall is a fake!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemuseum.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Museum<\/a><br \/>\n<em>A lot of fun, even if you&#8217;re a grown-up<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkts.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West End Shows<\/a><br \/>\nThere are loads of great shows, including Wicked, Jersey Boys, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakespearesglobe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shakespeare&#8217;s Globe<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Watch Romeo and Juliet done the way it was intended<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victoria &amp; Albert Museum<\/a><br \/>\n<em>The V&amp;A is rather how I imagine the Royal Family&#8217;s garage &#8211; full of weird, old junk that\u00a0hasn&#8217;t been used in years. It&#8217;s still rather cool and I hear their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/content\/articles\/f\/friday-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friday Late<\/a> events are great.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Randomness<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.southbanklondon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Bank<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Lots of great restaurants, music and an open-air bookstore<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinatownlondon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chinatown<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Always a good place to hang-out and people-watch. My favourite place to do this was the Jen Cafe near the Pagoda.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coventgardenlondonuk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covent Guarden<\/a><br \/>\n<em>A great place to see street performers<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/secretldn.com\/cecil-court-history\/?fbclid=IwAR1iypzk5BWxAtnYMv_HqZrooOTqOa5x34D1FIfaLn8WoDUSVUts9eKqH2s\">Cecil Court<\/a><br \/>\nAll the book stores!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those are my suggestions. <em><strong>Please tell me in the comments, what did I miss?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>26-Jan-16 UPDATE:<\/strong> There&#8217;s a great new map of the underground which gives the <a href=\"http:\/\/content.tfl.gov.uk\/walking-tube-map.pdf\">walking distance times between stations<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I will be going to\u00a0London later this year.
