A very quick post today. As I mentioned before, I’m trying to read through the Bible in a year. At the moment in the plan, each day I a section from Genesis, a psalm and a section from Matthew’s Gospel.\u00a0As I’ve been reading the Psalms, I noticed a curious word occasionally interspersed within the text, “Selah”<\/em><\/span>:<\/p>\n

\n

O\u00a0Lord, how many are my foes!<\/em><\/span>
\nMany are rising against me;<\/em><\/span>
\nmany are saying of me,<\/em><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0there is no help for him in God.\u00a0Selah<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But thou, O\u00a0Lord, art a shield about me,<\/em><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0my glory, and the lifter of my head.<\/em><\/span>
\nI cry aloud to the\u00a0Lord,<\/em><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and he answers me from his holy hill.\u00a0Selah<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I lie down and sleep;<\/em><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I wake again, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0sustains me.<\/em><\/span>
\nI am not afraid of ten thousands of people<\/em><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0who have set themselves against me round about.<\/em> – Psalm 3:1-6<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I wasn’t sure what this meant so I did a bit of googling…<\/p>\n

It turns out that the exact meaning of “Selah”<\/em><\/span> is somewhat disputed, but Wikipedia<\/a> suggests that “It is probably either a liturgico-musical mark or an instruction on the reading of the text, something like “stop and listen”.\u00a0Selah\u00a0can also be used to indicate that there is to be a musical interlude at that point in the Psalm”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
