I just wanted to share a little <em>&#8220;ah hah!&#8221;<\/em> moment I had recently.<\/p>\n<p>A little while back <a title=\"My great hope\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2013\/07\/12\/my-great-hope\/\">I went to vespers<\/a> at an Eastern Orthodox parish. The format of the service was almost identical to that of my Eastern Catholic parish. The only real differences were alternative melodic forms and slightly different English translations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20805 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Vespers.jpg\" alt=\"Vespers\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Vespers.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Vespers-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During my visit I noticed something about the translation of one of the psalms. Several times\u00a0Israel was referred to in the masculine form,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;him&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. This rather surprised me since I typically think of Israel as feminine, the people to whom God has <em>espoused<\/em> Himself and which, under the New Testament, flowers into the Church, the <em>Bride<\/em> of Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,\u00a0not like the covenant which I made with their fathers&#8230;which they broke, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">though I was their husband<\/span>, says the\u00a0Lord.<\/em> &#8211; Jeremiah 31:32<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After Vespers a few of us were talking to the priest and I raised this question. We agreed that Israel was probably referred to using the masculine gender to highlight the relationship of <em>sonship<\/em> between God and Israel:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>And you [Moses] shall say to Pharaoh, \u2018Thus says the\u00a0Lord, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Israel is my first-born son<\/span>,\u00a0and I say to you, \u201cLet <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">my son<\/span> go that he may serve me\u201d&#8230;\u2019<\/em> &#8211; Exodus 4:22-23<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the Old Covenant, God became Father to Israel and Israel became God&#8217;s first-born son, the elder brother among the nations, to manifest the wisdom of God and to lead the Gentiles back home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The article <a title=\"Androgynous Israel?\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2013\/08\/17\/androgynous-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Androgynous Israel?<\/a> first appeared on <a href=\"http:\/\/RestlessPilgrim.net\" target=\"_blank\">RestlessPilgrim.net<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A very short post today.
