{"id":19367,"date":"2013-06-15T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2013-06-15T14:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=19367"},"modified":"2019-04-26T14:18:47","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T21:18:47","slug":"liturgically-perturbed-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2013\/06\/15\/liturgically-perturbed-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Roman Catholics Say The Darndest Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I <a title=\"Going back east\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2013\/06\/09\/going-back-east\/\">mentioned<\/a> a few days ago, I have issued an open invitation to my friends to come with me to a Byzantine parish on Saturday, 29th June\u00a0to celebrate the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul (if you&#8217;d like to come, just <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">let me know<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I have <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?s=byzantine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">already written<\/a> quite a bit about the byzantine tradition and about my <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2010\/09\/06\/know-your-rites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first visit<\/a> to this parish, but I thought I&#8217;d put together a couple of short posts identifying some of the liturgical differences which may be encountered by my Roman Rite friends while on their visit at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll finish the list in a few days, but here are numbers 1-10 for <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Roman Catholics Say The Darndest Things<\/em><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>1. <em>&#8220;Why does the outside of the building look so weird? Is it a mosque?!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nEastern and western churches have different architectural styles, so expect to see <em>domes<\/em> rather than a <em>spire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Outside-Holy-Angels.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Outside-Holy-Angels.jpg\" alt=\"Outside Holy Angels\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>2. <em>&#8220;Where are the statues?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nRather than statues, expect to see icons and expect to see them <em>everywhere<\/em>! You&#8217;ll see them on every wall and all across the ceiling. There is also an icon screen (<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;iconostasis&#8221;<\/em><\/span>) which separates the main body of the church from the Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/icon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/inside.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/inside.jpg\" alt=\"inside\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>3. <em>&#8220;Where are the confessionals?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe Sacrament of Penance is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2013\/03\/23\/time-for-confession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a little different<\/a> here. Confessionals are not used. Instead, it is done at the front of the church before the icon of Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/confession.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-19503 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/confession.jpg\" alt=\"confession\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/confession.jpg 428w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/confession-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>4. <em>&#8220;Why is nobody genuflecting?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nArise! Rather than genuflecting, one makes the sign of the cross three times. Speaking of the sign of the cross&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/icon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/icon-1024x887.jpg\" alt=\"icon\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>5. <em>&#8220;Why are you doing the sign of the cross weird?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nIn the Eastern Church, the sign of the cross is made firstly to the\u00a0<em>right<\/em> shoulder and\u00a0<em>then<\/em> the left. As far as I can tell, this is the older form. It seems that, in the West, the congregation started mirroring the priest when he blessed them, thereby moving to the <em>left<\/em> shoulder first and <em>then<\/em> the right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">There is also additional symbolization. One draws together thumb and first two fingers to symbolize the Trinity and the final two fingers (ring and little finger) to symbolize the two natures of Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">The sign of the cross will be made\u00a0<em>a lot<\/em> during the service, typically whenever the Trinity is mentioned (which is\u00a0<em>a lot!)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/cross-fingers1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19512\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/cross-fingers1.jpg\" alt=\"cross fingers\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>6. <em>&#8220;Why does the priest have his back to us?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nYou may have seen something similar if you have attended a Roman Rite Mass of the Extraordinary Form. It&#8217;s not so much that the priest has his back to the congregation, rather he is <em>leading<\/em> us in prayer. Additionally, we are all thereby facing east, towards the light, the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Sun of Righteousness&#8221;<\/em><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mal%204:2&amp;version=RSV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malachi 4:2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/liturgy.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-19508 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/liturgy.jpg\" alt=\"liturgy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/liturgy.jpg 800w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/liturgy-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>7. <em>&#8220;Are we in a Broadway show?! There&#8217;s so much singing!&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/11\/why-do-we-sing-the-liturgy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtually everything<\/a> in the liturgy is sung in <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/06\/06\/byzantine-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unaccompanied chant<\/a>, adorning the words of our prayers with melody. Only the homily and <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/04\/29\/i-believe-and-profess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a short prayer before communion<\/a> are spoken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/choir.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19506 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/choir.jpg\" alt=\"choir\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>8. <em>&#8220;What&#8217;s with the bells and smells?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you go to a &#8220;high&#8221; Roman Mass, the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;thurible&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0which produces a sweet-smelling smoke of incense will be a familiar sight. It is the same in the East, except that there are bells attached, which harkens back to the Jerusalem Temple where the priest would wear bells while offering incense in the Holy Place. If you count them, you&#8217;ll there are twelve bells on the thurible representing the Apostles. One of the bells has no clanger, representing Judas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/censer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/censer.jpg\" alt=\"censer\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">9. <em>&#8220;Why is the liturgy so different?!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you look carefully, you&#8217;ll notice that a lot of what is said and done actually <em>does<\/em> have a parallel in the Rome Rite Mass. However, this is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocf.org\/OrthodoxPage\/liturgy\/liturgy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom<\/a>\u00a0and is therefore going to be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/eastern-worship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a little different<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/reading.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19509 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/reading.jpg\" alt=\"reading\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>10.<em> &#8220;This is all very weird. You&#8217;re sure this is Catholic, right?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nYes, it&#8217;s definitely Catholic. You can receive the Eucharist and everything! This is an <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/01\/09\/catholic-family-tree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eastern Rite Church<\/a> in full communion with the Pope in Rome. You&#8217;ll even see his picture in the foyer (<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;narthex&#8221;<\/em><\/span>).\u00a0In fact, Pope Francis&#8217; love of the Eastern liturgies is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicsun.org\/2013\/05\/13\/pope-francis-raises-hope-among-eastern-rite-catholics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">well documented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/francis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19510\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/francis.jpg\" alt=\"francis\" width=\"300\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/francis.jpg 300w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/francis-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s numbers 1-10 done.
