{"id":1904,"date":"2011-04-21T07:48:02","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T15:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thisrestlesspilgrim.wordpress.com\/?p=1904"},"modified":"2015-09-30T22:17:03","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T05:17:03","slug":"byzantine-back-and-forth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/04\/21\/byzantine-back-and-forth\/","title":{"rendered":"Byzantine Back and Forth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week is Holy Week and as the LifeTeen band isn&#8217;t playing this weekend, it means I can spend Easter at my favourite church, an Eastern Rite (Byzantine) Catholic parish near to where I live.\u00a0Alleluia!&#8230;well, almost \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59177\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Christ_is_risen_21.jpg\" alt=\"Christ_is_risen_21\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Christ_is_risen_21.jpg 960w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Christ_is_risen_21-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Christ_is_risen_21-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the things I love about the Byzantine Rite is the standard set of greetings and responses which take place during the year.\u00a0For example, when I first attended the parish I got there very early on in the morning and heard the priest greet a parishioner with the\u00a0exclamation:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Glory to Jesus Christ!&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, to which the parishioner responded <span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Glory forever!&#8221;<\/em><\/span>. This seems to me like a wonderful way to begin any conversation! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>These responses change throughout the liturgical year. \u00a0At &#8220;Nativity&#8221; (Christmas) it becomes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Christ is born!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> <em>&#8220;Glorify Him!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We will shortly be entering the &#8220;Pascha&#8221; (Easter) season when it will change to:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Christ is Risen!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> <em>&#8220;Indeed He is Risen!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And at certain blessings, such as at the end of Great Vespers or at the Kiss of Peace:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>&#8220;Christ is among us!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> <em>&#8220;He is and will be!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0These all seem wonderful ways of proclaiming the faith!
