Last year I didn’t complete my Reading List<\/a> and so to encourage me to finish it this year I’m going to post an update on the 1st of every month with my progress.<\/p>\n

In January, I finished the following books:<\/p>\n

The Screwtape Letters<\/a><\/del>\u00a0– C.S. Lewis
\nThe Great Divorce<\/a>\u00a0<\/del>– C.S. Lewis
\nMere Christianity<\/a><\/del>– C.S. Lewis
\nProblem of Pain<\/a><\/del>\u00a0– C.S. Lewis
\nThe Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks<\/a><\/del>\u00a0– Penguin Classics<\/p>\n

As you can see, it was a lot of C.S. Lewis this last month. I had read The Screwtape Letters<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The Great Divorce<\/a>\u00a0before but it was really nice to go through them again and rediscovering their deep spiritual insights. I found the\u00a0Problem of Pain<\/a>\u00a0quite hard going, but\u00a0Mere Christianity<\/a>\u00a0was a sheer delight to read, full of wit and wisdom.<\/p>\n

The Desert Fathers<\/a>\u00a0was a really interesting read and something of a mixed bag. Some of the sayings were pure gold and others were just rather “meh”. I’ve decided that for Lent this year I am going to post a different “Saying” for each of the forty days.<\/p>\n

This month I also began several books which I’m still\u00a0in the process of reading:<\/p>\n

Every Man’s Journey<\/a>\u00a0– James P. Campbell
\nHold Me Tight<\/a>\u00a0– Dr. Sue Johnson
\nConfessions<\/a>\u00a0– St. Augustine<\/p>\n

It took me a little while to get into St. Augustine’s\u00a0Confessions<\/a>\u00a0but I think I’m in a nice rhythm now and I’m getting used to the way he writes.\u00a0Every Man’s Journey<\/a>\u00a0is proving to be a rather light devotional book, but it’s a nice way to begin each day at work. I’m still fairly early on in\u00a0Hold Me Tight<\/a>, but the content is interesting and I’m pretty certain that it’ll inspire a blog post or two in the future.<\/p>\n

In addition to these books, I still have two books which I’m still working on from last year:<\/p>\n

After Jesus<\/a>\u00a0– Readers\u00a0Digest
\nJesus of Nazareth<\/a>\u00a0– Pope Benedict XVI<\/p>\n

I tend to read a few pages of\u00a0After Jesus<\/a>\u00a0each night before I go to sleep, so I imagine it’ll be a month or two before it’s finished. I’ve rather stalled on\u00a0Jesus of Nazareth<\/a>\u00a0– I need a good clear weekend and a good pot of tea to finish it.<\/p>\n
