{"id":14031,"date":"2012-09-15T12:00:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-15T19:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=14031"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:49:06","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T22:49:06","slug":"suffering-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/09\/15\/suffering-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Suffering &#8211; Part 2: For what purpose?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing with the extracts from my document on the Scriptural perspective on suffering&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14028\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/pain.jpg\" alt=\"pain\" width=\"368\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/pain.jpg 368w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/pain-300x124.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What might be gained from suffering?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Although death entered the world through the Fall, Scripture indicates that tribulation can be used by God for two particular ends&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>To reveal the glory of God<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em>In our sufferings the power of grace, the message of the Gospel and the glory of God is revealed<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>That is why, for Christ\u2019s sake, I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">delight<\/span>\u00a0in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,\u00a0in persecutions, in difficulties. For <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">when I am weak, then I am strong<\/span>.<\/em> \u2013 2 Corinthians 12:10<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>His disciples asked him, \u201cRabbi,\u00a0who sinned,\u00a0this man\u00a0or his parents,\u00a0that he was born blind?\u201d \u201cNeither this man nor his parents sinned,\u201d\u00a0said Jesus,\u00a0\u201cbut this happened so that<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> the works of God might be displayed in him<\/span>\u201d.<\/em> \u2013 John 9:2-3<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u2026what has happened to me has actually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">served to advance the gospel<\/span>\u2026 And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">because of my chains<\/span>,\u00a0most of the brothers and sisters have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">become confident in the Lord<\/span> and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">without fear<\/span>.<\/em> \u2013 Philippians 1:12-14<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>In all this you greatly rejoice,\u00a0though now for a little while\u00a0you may have had to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> suffer grief in all kinds of trials<\/span>. These have come so that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">proven genuineness<\/span>\u00a0of your<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> faith<\/span>\u2014of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">refined by fire<\/span>\u2014may result in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">praise, glory and honor<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">when Jesus Christ is revealed<\/span>.<\/em> \u2013 1 Peter 1:6-7<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>To lead us to perfection<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em>Through suffering God brings us to perfection and holiness.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Before I was afflicted\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I went astray<\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">now I obey your word<\/span>&#8230; It was good for me to be afflicted\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">so that I might learn your decrees<\/span>.<\/em> \u2013 Psalm 199:67, 71<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cMy son, do not make light of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the Lord\u2019s discipline<\/span>, and do not lose heart\u00a0when he rebukes you, because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the Lord disciplines the one he loves<\/span>, and he <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">chastens<\/span> everyone he accepts as his son.\u201d Endure hardship as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">discipline<\/span>; God is treating you as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">his children<\/span>.\u00a0For what children are not disciplined by their father? \u00a0\u2026<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God disciplines us for our good<\/span>, in order that we may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">share in his holiness<\/span>. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">painful<\/span>. Later on, however, it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">produces a harvest of righteousness and peace<\/span>\u00a0for those who have been <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">trained by it<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 Hebrews 12:5-7, 10-11<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>But rejoice\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings<\/span> of Christ,\u00a0so that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you may be overjoyed<\/span> when his glory is revealed.<\/em> \u2013 1 Peter 4:13<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u00a0[Y]ou know that the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">testing of your faith<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">produces perseverance<\/span>. Let perseverance finish its work so that you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">may be mature<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and complete, not lacking anything<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; James 1:3-4<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Praise be\u2026the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,\u00a0who<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> comforts us<\/span>\u00a0in all our<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> troubles<\/span>, so that<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> we can comfort<\/span> those in any trouble with<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> the comfort we ourselves receive from God<\/span>.\u00a0For just as we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">share abundantly<\/span> in the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> sufferings<\/span> of Christ,\u00a0so also our<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> comfort abounds<\/span> through Christ. If <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">we are distressed<\/span>, it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">for your comfort and salvation<\/span>;\u00a0if <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">we are comforted<\/span>, it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">for your comfort<\/span>, which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">produces in you patient endurance<\/span> of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">same sufferings we suffer<\/span>.<\/em> \u2013 2 Corinthians 1:3-7<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it for this series.
