Whom will they serve? Yahweh or some other god?\u00a0In the Gospel Reading, after hearing the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;hard teaching&#8221;<\/span><\/em> of the Lord about His Body and Blood, Jesus asks the Twelve if they wish to leave along with some of the other disciples. \u00a0Peter answers the \u00a0question in the same way I hope we would all answer: <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life&#8221;<span style=\"color: #888888\">.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We have a fundamental choice in life. Do we choose God, or do we choose something or someone else? As we hear God&#8217;s Word this week and gather around the altar to <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;taste and see that the Lord is good&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, let us renew our commitment to the Lord and say with Peter <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">We have come to believe\u00a0and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God&#8221;<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-13556\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Good-Choice-Bad-Choice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Good-Choice-Bad-Choice.jpg 600w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Good-Choice-Bad-Choice-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Reading I: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b<\/h3>\n<p>Our First Reading comes from the very last chapter of the Book of Joshua, where Joshua, in his final official act as leader of Israel, addresses the people and asks them the question we might ask ourselves: whom will you serve?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,\u00a0summoning their elders, their leaders,\u00a0their judges, and their officers.\u00a0When they stood in ranks before God,\u00a0Joshua addressed all the people:\u00a0&#8220;If it does not please you to serve the LORD,\u00a0decide today whom you will serve,\u00a0the gods your fathers served beyond the River\u00a0or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling.\u00a0As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">But the people answered,\u00a0&#8220;Far be it from us to forsake the LORD\u00a0for the service of other gods.\u00a0For it was the LORD, our God,\u00a0who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt,\u00a0out of a state of slavery.\u00a0He performed those great miracles before our very eyes\u00a0and protected us along our entire journey\u00a0and among the peoples through whom we passed.\u00a0Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13555\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Red-or-blue-pill.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Red-or-blue-pill.jpg 480w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Red-or-blue-pill-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the context for this passage? Where are the Israelites? What&#8217;s happened? Who&#8217;s <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Joshua&#8221;<\/span><\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>What challenge does Joshua give?<\/li>\n<li>How do the people respond?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Joshua&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua is the leader appointed by Moses to lead Israel after him (the priestly authority went to Eleazar). Joshua&#8217;s name was originally <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Hoshea&#8221;<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore\u00a0the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun\u00a0the name Joshua.)<\/em> &#8211; Numbers 13:16<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">(Joshua shares the same name as Jesus.\u00a0The Aramaic name given to our Lord when transliterated into English is\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cYeshua\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and means\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cThe Lord saves\u201d<\/em><\/span>. When this name was rendered in the Greek New Testament, the word\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cIesous\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0was used. Later, when the Greek manuscripts were translated into Latin, it was was rendered\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cIes<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">u<\/span>s\u201d<\/em><\/span>. In modern English this has become\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cJesus\u201d<\/em><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua was the man chosen to represent his tribe when the spies went into Canaan:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0said to Moses,\u00a0\u201cSend some men to explore\u00a0the land of Canaan,\u00a0which I am giving to the Israelites.\u00a0From each ancestral tribe\u00a0send one of its leaders.\u201d\u00a0So at the\u00a0Lord\u2019s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.\u00a0These are their names:\u00a0from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur; &#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> from the tribe of Ephraim,\u00a0Hoshea son of Nun<\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Numbers \u00a013:1-4, 8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It was Joshua who led the Israelites into battle against the Amalekites:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">The Amalekites\u00a0came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Moses said to Joshua,\u00a0\u201cChoose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff\u00a0of God in my hands.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur\u00a0went to the top of the hill.\u00a0As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,\u00a0but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.\u00a0When Moses\u2019 hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up\u2014one on one side, one on the other\u2014so that his hands remained steady till sunset.\u00a0So <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Joshua overcame the Amalekite\u00a0army with the sword<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8211; Exodus 17:8-13<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua and Caleb were the only two men who entered the promised land who were also over the age of twenty at the time of the Exodus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Not one of you will enter the land<\/span>\u00a0I swore with uplifted hand\u00a0to make your home, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">except Caleb son of Jephunneh\u00a0and Joshua son of Nun<\/span>.\u00a0As for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">your children<\/span> that you said would be taken as plunder, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected<\/span>.\u00a0But as for you, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">your bodies will fall\u00a0in this wilderness<\/span>.\u00a0Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,\u00a0suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.\u00a0For forty years\u00a0\u2014one year for each of the forty days you explored the land\u00a0\u2014you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.\u2019\u00a0I, the\u00a0Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things\u00a0to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.\u00a0\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">So the men Moses had sent\u00a0to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble\u00a0against him by spreading a bad report\u00a0about it\u2014\u00a0these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report\u00a0about the land were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">struck down and died of a plague<\/span>\u00a0before the\u00a0Lord.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Of the men who went to explore the land,\u00a0only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> &#8211; Numbers 14:30-38<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The others were not granted this blessing because of their infidelity and lack of faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,\u00a0summoning their elders, their leaders,\u00a0their judges, and their officers.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua gathers together all the leaders of the nation to address them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The place where they gather is called <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Shechem&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, literally <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;shoulders&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, because it is between the &#8220;shoulders&#8221; of Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When they stood in ranks before God,\u00a0Joshua addressed all the people:\u00a0&#8220;If it does not please you to serve the LORD,\u00a0decide today whom you will serve,\u00a0the gods your fathers served beyond the River\u00a0or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua challenges them: whom will they choose to worship? Yahweh or some other god or gods?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Joshua makes his declaration in the hope that others will follow suit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>But the people answered,\u00a0&#8220;Far be it from us to forsake the LORD\u00a0for the service of other gods.\u00a0For it was the LORD, our God,\u00a0who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt,\u00a0out of a state of slavery.\u00a0He performed those great miracles before our very eyes\u00a0and protected us along our entire journey\u00a0and among the peoples through whom we passed.\u00a0Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The people affirm that they will worship the Lord and remain faithful to His covenant with them.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21<\/h2>\n<p>This Sunday we have the thanksgiving (&#8220;Todah&#8221;) psalm which we&#8217;ve been hearing for the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. (9a) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will bless the LORD at all times;<\/em>\u00a0<em>his praise shall be ever in my mouth.\u00a0<\/em><em>Let my soul glory in the LORD;<\/em>\u00a0<em>the lowly will hear me and be glad.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The LORD has eyes for the just,<\/em>\u00a0<em>and ears for their cry.<\/em>\u00a0<em>The LORD confronts the evildoers,<\/em>\u00a0<em>to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,<\/em>\u00a0<em>and from all their distress he rescues them.<\/em>\u00a0<em>The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;<\/em>\u00a0<em>and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Many are the troubles of the just one,<\/em>\u00a0<em>but out of them all the LORD delivers him;<\/em>\u00a0<em>he watches over all his bones;<\/em>\u00a0<em>not one of them shall be broken.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What invitation is given by David?<\/li>\n<li>What does the psalmist say he will do?<\/li>\n<li>How is God described?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Commentary:<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. (9a) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is the same invitation we&#8217;ve heard for the last few weeks. It is the same invitation of every Mass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will bless the LORD at all times;<\/em>\u00a0<em>his praise shall be ever in my mouth.\u00a0<\/em><em>Let my soul glory in the LORD;<\/em>\u00a0<em>the lowly will hear me and be glad.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">David says that he will continually bless the Lord. The humble (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;lowly&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) will rejoice in this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The LORD has eyes for the just,<\/em>\u00a0<em>and ears for their cry.<\/em>\u00a0<em>The LORD confronts the evildoers,<\/em>\u00a0<em>to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">God looks upon the righteous and responds to their prayer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,<\/em>\u00a0<em>and from all their distress he rescues them.<\/em>\u00a0<em>The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;<\/em>\u00a0<em>and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">God&#8217;s care of the righteous is reiterated, as well as His love of those oppressed (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;brokenhearted&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;crushed in spirit&#8221;<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Many are the troubles of the just one,<\/em>\u00a0<em>but out of them all the LORD delivers him;<\/em>\u00a0<em>he watches over all his bones;<\/em>\u00a0<em>not one of them shall be broken.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A single person may have many problems, but the Lord saves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The verse\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>not one of them shall be broken&#8221; <\/em><\/span>is referenced in John&#8217;s description of the crucifixion of Christ:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup>Instead, one of the soldiers pierced\u00a0Jesus\u2019 side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.\u00a0The man who saw it\u00a0has given testimony, and his testimony is true.\u00a0He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.\u00a0These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Not one of his bones will be broken,<\/span>\u201d<\/em> &#8211; John 19:34-36<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">John&#8217;s usage of the psalm in this way perhaps hints that to be <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;deliver[ed]&#8221;<\/span><\/em> by the Lord does not necessarily mean that we are excused all pain and suffering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999\"><em>This passage is worth better and further explanation than what I provide here. However, since in the JP2 Group we will not be studying the Second Readings for the next few months, my commentary here will be brief.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: Ephesians 5:21-32<\/h3>\n<p>For the last few weeks we have been working our way through Paul&#8217;s letter to the Ephesians. \u00a0Paul has been exhorting the Ephesians. He has spoken\u00a0of unity in the Church, spiritual renewal, virtue, vice and Christian living. This week he focuses upon the Christian husband and wife.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Brothers and sisters:\u00a0Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.\u00a0Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.\u00a0For the husband is head of his wife\u00a0just as Christ is head of the church,\u00a0he himself the savior of the body.\u00a0As the church is subordinate to Christ,\u00a0so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.\u00a0Husbands, love your wives,\u00a0even as Christ loved the church\u00a0and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,\u00a0cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,\u00a0that he might present to himself the church in splendor,\u00a0without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,\u00a0that she might be holy and without blemish.\u00a0So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.\u00a0He who loves his wife loves himself.\u00a0For no one hates his own flesh\u00a0but rather nourishes and cherishes it,\u00a0even as Christ does the church,\u00a0because we are members of his body.\u00a0For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother\u00a0and be joined to his wife,\u00a0and the two shall become one flesh.\u00a0This is a great mystery,\u00a0but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why is this passage so often seen as controversial?<\/li>\n<li>What is Paul&#8217;s central message in this passage?<\/li>\n<li>What does he say to all his readers? What does he say to wives? What does he say to husbands?<\/li>\n<li>To what does Paul compare marriage?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Brothers and sisters:\u00a0Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is so often seen as a controversial passage, but I would suggest that it&#8217;s not seen as controversial for the right reasons! Paul begins this passage\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.<\/em>&#8221; <\/span>That&#8217;s radical! It goes completely against contemporary thinking which exults the ego and the self. &#8220;No&#8221;, says Paul. The self-sacrificial love of Christ is to be the guiding rule in\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>ALL<\/strong><\/span> our relationships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>W<\/em><em>ives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Wives are to treat their husbands as they would Christ. This is not degrading or servile submission, but free and voluntary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">We receive our dignity from both being made in <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;in the image and likeness of God&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+1:26&amp;version=NIV\">Genesis 1:26<\/a>) as well as being united together into one Body, <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;sharers together in the promise in\u00a0Christ\u00a0Jesus&#8221;<\/em><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+3:6&amp;version=NIV\">Ephesians 3:6<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The union of Christ and the Church is holy<\/span>. So is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the proper union of husband and wife holy<\/span>. Just as a congregation of heretics, however, cannot rightly be called the Church of\u00a0Christ and cannot have Christ as its head, so it is that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the union between husband and wife cannot be truly called holy if there is a disregard for the way of life taught by Christ<\/span>\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Saint <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Jerome (A.D. 436), Commentaries On The Epistle To The Ephesians, 5,22-23<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For the husband is head of his wife\u00a0just as Christ is head of the church,\u00a0he himself the savior of the body.\u00a0As the church is subordinate to Christ,\u00a0so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The relationship between the Church and Christ is explained and Paul compares this to the relationship between husband and wife. This is drawing on the Old Testament imagery of God&#8217;s &#8220;courtship&#8221; of His people:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For your Maker\u00a0is your <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">husband\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0Almighty is his name \u2014\u00a0the Holy One\u00a0of Israel is your Redeemer; \u00a0he is called the God of all the earth.\u00a0The\u00a0Lord\u00a0will call you back\u00a0as if you were a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">wife<\/span> deserted\u00a0and distressed in spirit\u2014\u00a0a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">wife<\/span> who married young,\u00a0only to be rejected,\u201d says your God.<span style=\"font-size: 11.111111640930176px\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFor a brief moment\u00a0I abandoned\u00a0you,\u00a0but with deep compassion\u00a0I will bring you back. \u00a0In a surge of anger\u00a0I hid\u00a0my face from you for a moment,\u00a0but with everlasting kindness \u00a0I will have compassion\u00a0on you,\u201d\u00a0says the\u00a0Lord\u00a0your Redeemer.<\/em> &#8211; Isaiah 54:5-8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Husbands, love your wives,\u00a0even as Christ loved the church\u00a0and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,\u00a0cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,\u00a0that he might present to himself the church in splendor,\u00a0without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,\u00a0that she might be holy and without blemish.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">When people object to this passage, this is usually the verse that they skip over. This verse shows that the submission is not one-sided. \u00a0Husbands are not called to be dictators. They are not called to be oppressive. Husbands are to treat their wives in the same way that Christ treats the Church. That&#8217;s huge! Recall to mind everything that Christ endured for the love of His Bride! Husbands are called to imitate this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">There were\u00a0washings\u00a0involved in the Jewish marital customs. However, the context of the Church the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;cleansing her by the bath of water with the word&#8221;<\/span><\/em> refers to Baptism:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cBy what \u2018word\u2019 is she \u2018washed?\u2019 \u2018In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.\u2019 He did not simply bathe her; He adorned her, making her glorious, having no spot or wrinkle or anything lacking. Let us not seek from the wife something she does not have to give. For you see the pattern: the Church has received everything from Christ\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Saint John Chrysostom (A.D. 392-397), Homilies On The Epistle To The Ephesians, 20,5,27<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.\u00a0He who loves his wife loves himself.\u00a0For no one hates his own flesh\u00a0but rather nourishes and cherishes it,\u00a0even as Christ does the church,\u00a0because we are members of his body. \u00a0<em>For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother\u00a0and be joined to his wife,\u00a0and the two shall become one flesh.\u00a0This is a great mystery,\u00a0but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Husbands are to treat their wives as they would their own body. In the book of Genesis it even speaks of husband and wife being <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;one flesh&#8221;<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united\u00a0to his wife, and they become <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one flesh<\/span><\/em> &#8211;\u00a0Genesis 2:24<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">St. Paul says that marriage between a man and woman is an embodiment, a visible sign of the union of Christ with His Church. This is why we call marriage a Sacrament (The Latin word for <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;mystery&#8221;<\/span><\/em> is <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;sacramentum&#8221;<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Gospel: John 6:60-69<\/h3>\n<p>Next week we return to the Gospel of Mark. This week, however, we hear the concluding verses of John 6 which contains the <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Bread of life\u00a0discourse&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, the chapter which we&#8217;ve been working through for the last few Sundays. Jesus is in the Synagogue of Capernaum, a\u00a0year before Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p>After recognizing Jesus as someone great (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%206:14&amp;version=NIV\">John 6:14<\/a>) , the crowd hear Jesus say that He will raise them to life (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%206:44,%2047&amp;version=NIV\">John 6:44, 47<\/a>) and that He is the bread of Heaven (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%206:51&amp;version=NIV\">John 6:51<\/a>). His hearers find these sayings problematic, but rather than softening His teaching, He then goes on to say that one must eat His <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;flesh&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and drink His <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;blood&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, that His flesh is <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;real food&#8221;<\/em><\/span> and His blood <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;real drink&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%206:55-56&amp;version=NIV\">John 6:55-56<\/a>). This last part proved too much for some&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Many of Jesus&#8217; disciples who were listening said,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;This saying is hard; who can accept it?&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">he said to them, &#8220;Does this shock you?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">to where he was before?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">It is the spirit that gives life,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">while the flesh is of no avail.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">But there are some of you who do not believe.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">and the one who would betray him.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">And he said,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">unless it is granted him by my Father.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">As a result of this,<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">many of his disciples returned to their former way of life<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">and no longer accompanied him.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus then said to the Twelve, &#8220;Do you also want to leave?&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Simon Peter answered him, &#8220;Master, to whom shall we go?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">You have the words of eternal life.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">We have come to believe<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-13557\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Path-Choice.jpg\" alt=\"Path Choice\" width=\"448\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Path-Choice.jpg 640w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Path-Choice-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the context for this passage? What has Jesus been saying?<\/li>\n<li>How do the people (His own disciples!) react?<\/li>\n<li>How does Jesus respond to this?<\/li>\n<li>What does Jesus ask the Twelve?<\/li>\n<li>Who responds? What is his response?<\/li>\n<li>What is the &#8220;stumbling block&#8221; for many people concerning the Catholic Faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Many of Jesus&#8217; disciples who were listening said,\u00a0&#8220;This saying is hard; who can accept it?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus has said that\u00a0they must eat His <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;flesh&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and drink His <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;blood&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. This is too much for some of His listeners. In the past few weeks as we&#8217;ve worked through this <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Bread of Life Discourse&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, Jesus has not shrunk from controversy, but been all the more blatant in His teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It&#8217;s not that they don&#8217;t understand His teaching, they just can&#8217;t accept it. Earlier in this chapter Jesus had told them what they had to do to be doing the works of God:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cThe work of God is this: to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">believe<\/span>\u00a0in the one he has sent.\u201d<\/em> &#8211; John 6:29<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is too much for them though.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>i.e. difficult to receive, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">too much for their weakness<\/span>. They thought He spoke above Himself, and more loftily than He had a right to do; and so said they, Who can bear it? which was answering in fact for themselves, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">that they could not<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus knows their hearts and that they are having problems with what He has said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>They spoke, however, so as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not to be heard by Him<\/span>. But He, who knew what was in them, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">heard within Himself<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Augustine<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">John no doubt uses the word <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;murmuring&#8221;<\/em><\/span> purposefully,\u00a0hearkening\u00a0back to the Israelites in the desert:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>In the desert the whole community <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">grumbled<\/span>\u00a0against Moses and Aaron.<\/em> &#8211; Exodus 16:2<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;he said to them, &#8220;Does this shock you?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Literally, is this a stumbling block for you? (The Greek word <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;scandalon&#8221;<\/span><\/em>)\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending\u00a0to where he was before?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">He uses the title of <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Son of Man&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0to describe Himself (as we&#8217;ve seen over recent weeks this alludes to the vision of the Prophet Daniel in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Daniel%207:13&amp;version=NIV\">Daniel 7:13<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus is speaking here of His Ascension.\u00a0These words would probably have called to mind the assumption of Enoch (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis%205:24&amp;version=NIV\">Genesis 5:24<\/a>) and Elijah (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Kings%202:11&amp;version=NIV\">2 Kings 2:11<\/a>). It is also possible that Moses was brought to mind, since a tradition said that his body was taken by God, which is why it has never been found (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy%2034:6&amp;version=NIV\">Deuteronomy 34:6<\/a>).\u00a0Would the people believe if Jesus was taken up into Heaven like one of the Prophets?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It is also possible that Jesus could be\u00a0referring\u00a0to the crucifixion, when His flesh was offered for the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus also speaks of His Heavenly pre-existence with the Father (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;where he was before&#8221;<\/span><\/em>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The Evangelist wishes to show us, that He knew all things before the foundation of the world: which was a proof of His divinity.<\/em> &#8211; Theophyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Fathers offer some commentary on verse:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The revelation however of these hidden things was a mark of His Divinity: hence the meaning of what follows; &#8220;And if you shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before; supply, What will you say?&#8221; He said the same to Nathanael, &#8220;Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, believe you? You shall see greater things than these&#8221;. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">He does not add difficulty to difficulty<\/span>, but to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">convince them by the number and greatness of His doctrines<\/span>. For if He had merely said that He came down from heaven, without adding any thing further, he would have offended His hearers more; but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">by saying that His flesh is the life of the world, and that as He was sent by the living Father, so He lives by the Father; and at last by adding that He came down from heaven, He removed all doubt<\/span>. Nor does He mean to scandalize His disciples, but rather to remove their scandal. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">For so long as they thought Him the Son of Joseph, they could not receive His doctrines; but if they once believed that He had come down from heaven and would ascend thither, they would be much more willing and able to admit them<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Or, these words are an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">answer to their mistake<\/span>. They supposed that He was going to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">distribute His body in bits<\/span>: whereas He tells them now, that He should <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ascend to heaven whole and entire<\/span>: What and if you shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before? You will then see that He does not distribute His body in the way you think. Again; Christ became the Son of man, of the Virgin Mary here upon earth, and took flesh upon Him: He says then, &#8220;What and, if you shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?&#8221; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to let us know that Christ, God and man, is one person, not two<\/span>; and the object of one faith, not a quaternity, but a Trinity. He was the Son of man in heaven, as He was Son of God upon earth; the Son of God upon earth by assumption of the flesh, the Son of man in heaven, by the unity of the person.<\/em> &#8211; St. Augustine<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>It is the spirit that gives life,\u00a0while the flesh is of no avail.\u00a0The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus is no longer talking about\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">His<\/span> flesh (since it gives life to the world). He&#8217;s talking about our fleshly natures and failed human reasons. His listeners have just been concerned with the physical aspects of life and the filling of their bellies. \u00a0He therefore says that without the spirit, the flesh is dead. He then speaks of\u00a0grace and new birth:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Flesh gives birth to flesh, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the Spirit\u00a0gives birth to spirit<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; John 3:6<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup>So it is written: \u201cThe first man Adam became a living being\u201d;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the last Adam,\u00a0a life-giving spirit<\/span>.\u00a0The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual.\u00a0The first man was of the dust of the earth;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the second man is of heaven<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; 1 Corinthians 15:45-47<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>He tries to remove their difficulties in another way, as follows, &#8220;It is the spirit that quickens, the flesh profits nothing&#8221;: that is to say, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">&#8220;You ought to understand My words in a spiritual sense: he who understands them carnally is profited nothing&#8221;<\/span>. To interpret carnally is to take a proposition in its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bare literal meaning, and allow no other<\/span>. But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">we should not judge of mysteries in this way<\/span>; but examine them with the inward eye; i.e. understand them spiritually. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">It was carnal to doubt how our Lord could give His flesh to eat. What then? Is it not real flesh? Yes, verily. In saying then that the flesh profits nothing, He does not speak of His own flesh, but that of the carnal hearer of His word<\/span><\/em> &#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>They had understood by His flesh, as it were, of a carcass, that was to be cut up, and sold in the shambles, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not of a body animated by the spirit<\/span>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Join the spirit to the flesh, and it profits much<\/span>: for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">if the flesh profited not, the Word would not have become flesh, and dwelt among us<\/span>. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Spirit has done much for our salvation, by means of the flesh<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; St. Augustine\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><em>&#8220;&#8230;But there are some of you who do not believe.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe\u00a0and the one who would betray him.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus doesn&#8217;t soften His teaching to make it more\u00a0palatable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It is interesting that John mentions Judas here (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;the one who would betray him&#8221;<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>And he said,\u00a0&#8220;For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me\u00a0unless it is granted him by my Father.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Grace is necessary. We cannot come to Jesus through pure human effort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>As if He said, Men\u2019s unbelief does not disturb or astonish Me: I know to whom the Father has given to come to Me. He mentions the Father, to show first that He had no eye to His own glory; secondly, that God was His Father, and not Joseph.<\/em> &#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>As a result of this,\u00a0many of his disciples returned to their former way of life\u00a0and no longer accompanied him.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is the only time in Jesus&#8217; ministry that we see large numbers of people leave Him. How many people left? The text isn&#8217;t clear, but it&#8217;s probably a lot. They had taken Jesus&#8217; words literally, couldn&#8217;t deal with them, and so left. If this was just a misunderstanding, wouldn&#8217;t you expect Jesus to clarify what He was saying? Since He doesn&#8217;t do this, we can only conclude that Jesus was speaking literally and meant every word He said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Jesus then said to the Twelve, &#8220;Do you also want to leave?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Many of the people in the broader group of disciples have left. Jesus now turns to his &#8220;inner circle&#8221; of followers. He doesn&#8217;t clarify His teaching any more, He simply asks them if they too want to leave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Our Lord knew well the intentions of the other disciples which stayed, as to staying or going; but yet He put the question to them, in order to prove their faith, and hold it up to imitation: Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will you also go away?<\/em> &#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Simon Peter answered him, &#8220;Master, to whom shall we go?\u00a0You have the words of eternal life.\u00a0We have come to believe\u00a0and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Peter acts as\u00a0spokesmen for the Twelve (as usual). He asks a rhetorical question, demonstrating their belief that there is no other place to go. They might not completely grasp everything that Jesus is saying here, but they believe in Him and trust Him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Let us in everything believe God, and gainsay him in nothing, though what is said be contrary to our hearts\u00a0and senses\u2026Let us act likewise in respect to the [eucharistic] mysteries, not looking at the things set before\u00a0us, but keeping in mind his words.
