{"id":13019,"date":"2012-07-19T07:00:31","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T14:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=13019"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:38:05","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T22:38:05","slug":"if-you-want-something-done-properly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/07\/19\/if-you-want-something-done-properly\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Lectionary: If you want something done properly&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: 22nd July 2012<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/good-shepherd-icon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/good-shepherd-icon.jpg\" alt=\"good shepherd icon\" width=\"200\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a>The theme throughout the Readings this week is that of shepherding.<\/p>\n<p>In our First Reading the Prophet Jeremiah berates the leaders of Israel who have failed in their duty to carefully shepherd the people. In response to their failure, God promises that He Himself\u00a0will gather His people together and that there will come from the line of David an exemplary shepherd.<\/p>\n<p>This good shepherd is, of course, Jesus Christ and this is demonstrated in our Gospel this week when we hear about our Lord&#8217;s compassion on the people <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">for they were like sheep without a shepherd&#8221;<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, in our Second Reading, St. Paul praises the wisdom of God who, through Christ, has <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">broke[n] down\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">the dividing wall of enmity&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, thus uniting two flocks, the flock of the the Jews and the flock of the Gentiles. These two flocks are gathered into the Church under one Shepherd, Christ.<\/p>\n<p>And so in our Psalm we praise the Lord, our Shepherd, who is by our side even though the\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;dark valley&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and who leads us\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;beside restful waters&#8221; <\/em><\/span>\u00a0and to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;verdant pastures&#8221;<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>As the Lord <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;spread[s] the table before [us]&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 this week in the Eucharistic feast, let us celebrate our Good Shepherd, who loves so much that He laid down His life for us, His sheep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lvi1UM_4YcM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading I: Jeremiah 23:1-6<\/h3>\n<p>The Kingdom of Judah has surrendered to the Babylonians and there has been a mass deportation. King\u00a0Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has installed Zedekiah as his puppet king in Judah. In this passage, Jeremiah rebukes the rulers who failed in their duty. \u00a0He then promises to eventually bring back His people back from exile and raise up for them a worthy Davidic King.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/rescued-sheep.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"256\" \/>\u00a0<em>Woe to the shepherds\u00a0who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the LORD. Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people:\u00a0You have scattered my sheep and driven them away.\u00a0You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds. I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have driven them and bring them back to their meadow; there they shall increase and multiply. I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be missing, says the LORD.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David; as king he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah shall be saved, Israel shall dwell in security. This is the name they give him: &#8220;The LORD our justice.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What complaint does the Lord make?<\/li>\n<li>What imagery does He use?<\/li>\n<li>Who were <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;the shepherds&#8221;<\/span><\/em>? \u00a0How did they <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>scattered [the] sheep and drive them away&#8221;<\/em><\/span>? Who are the <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;sheep&#8221;<\/em><\/span>?<\/li>\n<li>What solution does God say He will provide? Who are the <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<em>shepherds&#8221; <\/em><\/span>he says He will appoint?<\/li>\n<li>What will the result be?<\/li>\n<li>What is the promise made at the end of the passage?<\/li>\n<li>To what do <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Judah&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Israel&#8221;<\/span><\/em> refer?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u00a0<em>Woe to the shepherds\u00a0who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the LORD. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;shepherds&#8221;<\/em><\/span> appear to primarily refer to the Kings, but it may also be applied more broadly to those in charge which would have included the priests and religious leaders. The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;sheep&#8221;<\/span><\/em> are the people of Judah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The use of shepherd imagery is found throughout the Old Testament:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cMay the\u00a0Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,\u00a0appoint someone over this <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">community<\/span>\u00a0to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the\u00a0Lord\u2019s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd<\/span>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Numbers 27:16-17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then Micaiah answered, \u201cI saw all Israel <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">scattered\u00a0on the hills like sheep without a shepherd<\/span>,\u00a0and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said, \u2018These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.\u2019\u201d<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a01 Kings 22:17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I will lead you<\/span> through the heart of Judea until you come to Jerusalem, and there in its center I will set up your throne. You will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">drive them like sheep that have no shepherd<\/span>, and not even a dog will growl at you. This was told to me in advance and announced to me, and I have been sent to tell you.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Judith 11:19<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The idols\u00a0speak deceitfully,\u00a0diviners\u00a0see visions that lie;\u00a0they tell dreams\u00a0that are false,\u00a0they give comfort in vain.\u00a0Therefore <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the people wander like sheep\u00a0oppressed for lack of a shepherd<\/span>.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Zechariah 10:2<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will place over them <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one shepherd<\/span>, my servant <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">David<\/span>, and he will tend\u00a0them; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he will tend them and be their shepherd<\/span>.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Ezekiel 34:23<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The leaders of the people have failed though in their shepherding duties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people:\u00a0<em>You have scattered my sheep and driven them away.\u00a0You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds.\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Because the bad shepherds have scattered the flock, there will be punishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">There is a parallel in the text with the same Hebrew root word. The NIV has it <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bestowed<\/span> care&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bestow<\/span> punishment&#8221;<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I myself will gather the remnant of my flock&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">If you want a job done properly, do it yourself! Since the shepherds failed, the Lord will do it Himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;<em>\u00a0from all the lands\u00a0<\/em>to which I have driven them&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Although the shepherds are blamed, the Lord says that He ultimately drove them away (for violating His covenant).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and bring them back to their meadow; there they shall increase and multiply. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Lord will take good care of His flock. He will bring them back from exile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Here we have the same command found in Genesis: <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;increase and multiply&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(and he wasn&#8217;t just talking about doing arithmetic \ud83d\ude09 )<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be missing, says the LORD.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">New shepherds will be appointed. These shall not fail. The people will rest securely, trusting in their shepherd, like David in the Responsorial Psalm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David; as king he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A Messiah is promised, a descendant of David, who will be a good King:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">shoot<\/span>\u00a0will come up from the stump\u00a0of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jesse<\/span>;\u00a0from his roots a Branch\u00a0will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bear fruit<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; Isaiah 11:1<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">(Jesse was David&#8217;s father)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This verse finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>In his days Judah shall be saved, Israel shall dwell in security. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Messiah will come for both the Northern Kingdom (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Israel&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) and the Southern Kingdom (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Judah&#8221;<\/span><\/em>). There will again be unity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>This is the name they give him: &#8220;The LORD our justice.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is a play on the puppet king&#8217;s name <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Zedakiah&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, which means <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;my justice is God&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 23:1-3, 3-4, 5, 6<\/h3>\n<p>Given that the theme of the Readings this week is that of shepherding, it is no surprise that the Responsorial Psalm is drawn from probably the most well-known psalm, Psalm 23.<\/p>\n<p>I will provide some brief notes here, but I have written <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/04\/jehovah-jireh\/#psalm23\">commentary on this psalm<\/a> before so for a more thorough treatment I would suggest you consult <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2011\/10\/04\/jehovah-jireh\/#psalm23\">those notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>\u00a0R. (1) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This Psalm was composed by King David who, as a boy worked as a shepherd.\u00a0David now describes God in terms of his former occupation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.\u00a0In verdant pastures he gives me repose;\u00a0beside restful waters he leads me;\u00a0he refreshes my soul.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A good shepherd feeds and waters his sheep. God is no exception.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">One could see Eucharistic imagery here in that Jesus nurtures us with His Body and Blood in the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">He guides me in right paths\u00a0for his name&#8217;s sake.\u00a0Even though I walk in the dark valley\u00a0I fear no evil; for you are at my side\u00a0with your rod and your staff\u00a0that give me courage.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Lord guides David through life and because the Lord is with Him, he is confident.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">You spread the table before me\u00a0in the sight of my foes;\u00a0you anoint my head with oil;\u00a0my cup overflows.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Again, we could see this verse pointing towards the Eucharistic banquet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Only goodness and kindness follow me\u00a0all the days of my life;\u00a0and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD\u00a0for years to come.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">David expresses complete trust in the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;house of the Lord&#8221;<\/span><\/em> would have referred to the Temple, but we could also understand it as Heaven.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: Ephesians 2:13-18<\/h3>\n<p>Last week we heard from the Letter to the Ephesians, after skipping a few verses, we continue this week. How have walls been knocked down?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Brothers and sisters:\u00a0In Christ Jesus you who once were far off\u00a0have become near by the blood of Christ.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Previously, Gentiles (those <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;far off&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) were not part of the Covenant with God which was enjoyed by the Jews. However, through Jesus&#8217; atoning death Gentiles may enter into Covenant with God through faith and Baptism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For he is our peace, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Through His sacrifice, Christ has brought peace:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and through him to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">reconcile\u00a0to himself all things<\/span>, whether things on earth or things in heaven,\u00a0by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">making peace\u00a0through his blood<\/span>,\u00a0shed on the cross.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Once you were alienated<\/span> from God and were enemies\u00a0in your minds\u00a0because of\u00a0your evil behavior.\u00a0But now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he has reconciled\u00a0you<\/span> by Christ\u2019s physical body\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">through death<\/span> to present you\u00a0holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation<\/em> &#8211; Colossians 1:20-22<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For to us a child is born,\u00a0to us a son is given,\u00a0and the government\u00a0will be on his shoulders.\u00a0And he will be called\u00a0Wonderful Counselor,\u00a0Mighty God,\u00a0Everlasting\u00a0Father,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Prince of Peace<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; Isaiah 9:6<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The peace which Christ brings is the reconciliation of mankind with God. Through this peace we are reconciled with one another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;he who made both one\u00a0and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This refers to:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">1. The animosity between the Jews and the Gentiles. The Jews had a very low opinion of the Gentiles, not least because of their idolatry. Israel separated itself from the other nations so as to insulate herself from their immorality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>You are to be holy to me\u00a0because I, the\u00a0Lord, am holy,\u00a0and I have set you apart from the nations\u00a0to be my own.<\/em> &#8211; Leviticus<\/span> 20:26<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">2. The physical 6ft wall which separated Jews and Gentiles in the Temple. The Gentiles were allowed in the outer court, but could not enter the inner court under pain of death:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cThus was the first enclosure, in the midst of which, and not far from it, was the second, to be gone up to by a few steps; this was encompassed by a stone wall for a partition, with an inscription, which forbade any foreigner to go in, under pain of death.\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Flavius Josephus, &#8220;Antiquities of the Jews&#8221;, 15.11,5\u00a7417<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">In fact, Paul was nearly killed when it was thought he had brought a Gentile into the inner Temple:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8230; \u201cFellow Israelites, help us! &#8230;[Paul] has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">brought Greeks into the temple<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">defiled this holy place<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0(They had previously seen <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Trophimus\u00a0the Ephesian<\/span>\u00a0in the city with Paul and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple<\/span>)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;Seizing Paul,\u00a0they dragged him\u00a0from the temple&#8230;\u00a0While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar.<\/em> &#8211; Acts 21:28-31<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">3. The veil in the temple which separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;through his flesh, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">His sacrifice on the cross (which is also made present in the Eucharist)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus said that He would fulfill the Law&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cDo not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Matthew 5:17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">&#8230;and this is what He did through His sacrifice.\u00a0What is actually abolished are the legal precepts which separated Jew and Gentile:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Circumcision<\/li>\n<li>Animal sacrifice<\/li>\n<li>Keeping kosher (dietary laws)<\/li>\n<li>Festival days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">With these abolished, Jew and Gentile are now one in Christ. The moral law, however, remains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two,\u00a0<em>thus establishing peace,\u00a0and might reconcile both with God,\u00a0in one body, through the cross,\u00a0putting that enmity to death by it.\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus makes the two one:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cDon\u2019t you see? The Greek does not have to become a Jew. Rather both enter into a new \u00a0condition. His aim is not to bring Greek believers into being as different kinds of Jews but \u00a0rather <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to create both anew<\/span>. Rightly he uses the term \u2018create\u2019 rather than \u2018change\u2019 to point out the great effect of what God has done. Even though the creation is invisible it is no less a creation of its Creator\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Saint John Chrysostom (A.D. 392-397), &#8220;Homilies On The Epistle To The Ephesians&#8221;, 5,2,13-15<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He came and preached peace to you who were far off\u00a0and peace to those who were near, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This fulfills the words of Isaiah:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I have seen their ways, but I will heal\u00a0them;\u00a0I will guide\u00a0them and restore comfort\u00a0to Israel\u2019s mourners,\u00a0creating praise on their lips.\u00a0<\/em><em>Peace, peace,\u00a0to those <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">far and near<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0says the\u00a0Lord. \u201cAnd I will heal them.\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Isaiah 57:18-19<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In Paul&#8217;s words we see how Christ brings together both the Gentiles (<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;far off&#8221;<\/em><\/span>) and the Jews (<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;near&#8221;<\/em><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;for through him we both have access\u00a0<em>in one Spirit to the Father<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Paul uses a Trinitarian formula here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">through [Jesus]<\/span> we have both access <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">in<\/span> one <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Spirit<\/span> t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">o<\/span> the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Father<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It is through Christ that we have access to the Father, whereas previously the veil in the Temple limited access to God:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.<span style=\"font-size: 11px\">\u00a0<\/span>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">curtain of the temple was torn<\/span> in two from top to bottom.<\/em> &#8211; Mark 15:37-38<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence\u00a0to enter the Most Holy Place\u00a0by the blood of Jesus,\u00a0by a new and living <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">way\u00a0opened for us through the curtain,\u00a0that is, his body<\/span>&#8230;<\/em> &#8211; Hebrews 10:19-20<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Before we were slaves and we have become sons and heirs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.\u00a0The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.\u00a0So also, when we were underage, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">we were in slavery<\/span>\u00a0under the elemental spiritual forces<span style=\"font-size: 11px\">\u00a0<\/span>of the world.\u00a0But when the set time had fully come,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God sent his Son<\/span>,\u00a0born of a woman,\u00a0born under the law,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to redeem\u00a0those under the law<\/span>, that we might <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">receive adoption\u00a0to sonship<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; Galatians 4:1-5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Spirit\u00a0you received<\/span> does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;\u00a0rather, the Spirit you received brought about your <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">adoption to sonship<\/span>.<span style=\"font-size: 11px\">\u00a0<\/span>And by him we cry,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Abba,<span style=\"font-size: 11px\">\u00a0<\/span>Father.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit\u00a0that we are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God\u2019s children<\/span>.\u00a0Now if we are children, then we are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">heirs<\/span>\u00a0\u2014heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings\u00a0in order that we may also share in his glory.<\/em> &#8211; Romans 8:15-17\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel: Mark 6:30-34<\/h3>\n<p>After last week&#8217;s Gospel, in which Jesus had sent out the Twelve, Mark takes a few verses to relate the martyrdom of John the Baptist (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%206:14-29&amp;version=NIV\">Mark 6:14-29<\/a>)\u00a0.Mark then picks up the story of the Twelve again as they come back and report to Jesus&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The apostles gathered together with Jesus\u00a0and reported all they had done and taught.\u00a0He said to them,\u00a0&#8220;Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.&#8221;\u00a0People were coming and going in great numbers,\u00a0and they had no opportunity even to eat.\u00a0So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.\u00a0People saw them leaving and many came to know about it.\u00a0They hastened there on foot from all the towns\u00a0and arrived at the place before them.\u00a0When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,\u00a0his heart was moved with pity for them,\u00a0for they were like sheep without a shepherd;\u00a0and he began to teach them many things.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13037\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sheep-following-the-shepherd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sheep-following-the-shepherd.jpg 374w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/sheep-following-the-shepherd-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the context for this passage?<\/li>\n<li>What is the issue?<\/li>\n<li>What is Jesus&#8217; How would you respond?<\/li>\n<li>What event happens right after this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The apostles gathered together with Jesus\u00a0and reported all they had done and taught.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus had sent the Twelve Apostles out to preach and heal. They now return to Him with a report of everything that happened.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>For they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">return to the fountain-head whence the streams flow<\/span>; those who are sent by God, always <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">offer up thanks<\/span> for those things which they have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">received<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Pseudo-Jerome<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Let us also learn, when we are sent on any mission, not to go far away, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not to overstep the bounds of the office committed<\/span>, but to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">go often to him<\/span>, who sends us, and report all that we have done and taught; for we must not only teach but act.<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0Theophylact<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is only one of two places in Mark where he uses the word <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;apostle&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. In the New Testament the word is used to refer to:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">1. The Twelve<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">2. Paul<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">3. A larger, more general group which included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=acts%2014:14&amp;version=NIV\">Barnabas<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=gal%201:19&amp;version=NIV\">James<\/a>, as well as possibly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans%2016:7&amp;version=NIV\">Andronicus and Junias<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He said to them,\u00a0&#8220;Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.&#8221;\u00a0<em>\u00a0People were coming and going in great numbers,\u00a0and they had no opportunity even to eat.\u00a0<em>So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus wants to take His disciples away on retreat! they have been labouring hard in the vineyards of the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8230;Christ makes His disciples <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">rest<\/span>, that men who are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">set over others<\/span> may learn, that they who <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">labour<\/span> in any work or in the word <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">deserve rest<\/span>, and ought <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not to labour continually<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0Theophylact<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">I think this is some good advice for all who minister in the Kingdom. Those who ignore this advice will likely burn-out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>People saw them leaving and many came to know about it.\u00a0They hastened there on foot from all the towns\u00a0and arrived at the place before them.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The crowds find out where they&#8217;ve going run ahead of them. Don&#8217;t let them get away!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">St. Bede says that in taking the Twelve away He was also testing the crowds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The disciples did not enter into the ship alone, but taking up the Lord with them, they went to a desert place, as Matthew shews. Here He <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tries the faith of the multitude<\/span>, and by seeking a desert place He would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">see whether they care to follow Him<\/span>. And they follow Him, and not on horseback, nor in carriages, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">laboriously<\/span> coming on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">foot<\/span>, they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">shew how great is their anxiety for their salvation<\/span>.<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0&#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Theophylact draws a spiritual lesson from the action of the crowds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>So do thou <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not wait for Christ<\/span> till He Himself call you, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">outrun Him<\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">come before Him<\/span>.\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Theophylact<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">He also compares Jesus the Good Shepherd to the other shepherds of Israel at the time:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The Pharisees being ravening wolves did not feed the sheep, but devoured them; for which reason they gather themselves to Christ, the true Shepherd, who gave them spiritual food, that is, the word of God. &#8211;<\/em>\u00a0Theophylact<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd,\u00a0his heart was moved with pity for them,\u00a0for they were like sheep without a shepherd;\u00a0and he began to teach them many things.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus had incorporated shepherd imagery into His teaching:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cWhat do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?\u00a0And if he finds it, truly I tell you, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off<\/span>.<\/em>&#8211; Matthew 18:12-13<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">&#8230;and also described Himself as the Good Shepherd:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI am\u00a0the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">good shepherd<\/span>.\u00a0The good shepherd <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">lays down his life for the sheep<\/span>.\u00a0The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.\u00a0Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.\u00a0The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cI am the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">good shepherd<\/span>;\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I know my sheep<\/span>\u00a0and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">my sheep know me<\/span>\u2014\u00a0just as the Father knows me and I know the Father\u00a0\u2014and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I lay down my life for the sheep<\/span>.\u00a0I have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">other sheep<\/span>\u00a0that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">listen to my voice<\/span>, and there shall be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one flock<\/span>\u00a0and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one shepherd<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0John 10:11-16<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">&#8230;and this is demonstrated by Jesus compassion, rather than annoyance, for the crowds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Later in his epistle, St. Peter describes Jesus as a shepherd:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For \u201cyou were like sheep going astray,\u201d\u00a0but now you have returned to\u00a0the Shepherd\u00a0and Overseer\u00a0of your souls.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a01 Peter 2:25<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Apostles themselves would later become shepherds, particularly Peter:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter,\u00a0\u201cSimon son of John, do you love me more than these?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u201cYes, Lord,\u201d he said, \u201cyou know that I love you.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus said,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Feed my lambs<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Again Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cSimon son of John, do you love me?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">He answered, \u201cYes, Lord, you know that I love you.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Jesus said,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Take care of my sheep<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">The third time he said to him,\u00a0\u201cSimon son of John, do you love me?\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time,\u00a0\u201cDo you love me?\u201d\u00a0He said, \u201cLord, you know all things;\u00a0you know that I love you.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Jesus said,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Feed my sheep<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0John 21:15-17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">At the end of this Gospel passage the stage is set for the &#8220;Feeding of the multitudes&#8221;, which we&#8217;ll hear next week&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: 22nd July 2012 The theme throughout the Readings this week is that of shepherding.
