{"id":12962,"date":"2012-07-12T12:00:18","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T19:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=12962"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:36:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T22:36:41","slug":"invented-at-nicaea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/07\/12\/invented-at-nicaea\/","title":{"rendered":"Invented at Nicaea?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A friend of mine recently told me about a conversation she had with her friend who considered himself a follower of Jesus, but who also held to the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dan_Brown\">Dan Brown<\/a> myth that one also often hears from Jehovah Witnesses and Muslims,\u00a0that the divinity of Christ was something invented by the Emperor Constantine at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Council_of_Nicaea\">Council of Nicaea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12992\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12992\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12992 \" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/albino-monk.jpg\" alt=\"albino monk\" width=\"230\" height=\"274\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#8217;t trust murdering albino monks when it comes to theology&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I promised my friend that I would put together a post to demonstrate the Divinity of Christ from both Sacred Scripture and Early Church history, so here it is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Biblical Jesus<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout the New Testament, Jesus Christ says things and does things which no man, no prophet, even no angel could say or do. To list and explain them all would take considerable time, so instead I&#8217;ll just provide a few passages:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>[Jesus said] &#8220;You have heard that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">it was said<\/span>, \u2018You shall not commit adultery.\u2019<span style=\"font-size: 11px\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">But I tell you<\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Matthew 5:27-28<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>So the Son of Man\u00a0is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lord even of the Sabbath<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Mark 2:28<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. \u201cIf you are the Son of God,\u201d he said, \u201cthrow yourself down from here&#8221; Jesus answered, \u201cIt is said: \u2018Do not put <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the Lord your God<\/span> to the test.\u2019\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Luke 4:9,12<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For this reason they tried all the more to kill [Jesus];\u00a0not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">making himself equal with God<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; John 5:18<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>[Jesus said] \u201cVery truly I tell you,\u201d\u00a0Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cbefore Abraham was born,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I AM<\/span>!\u201d<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0John 8:58<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Thomas said to [Jesus], \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">My Lord and my God<\/span>!\u201d<\/em>&#8211; John 20:28<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Theirs are the patriarchs,\u00a0and from them is traced the human ancestry of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the Messiah,\u00a0who is God over all,\u00a0forever praised<\/span>!<\/em> &#8211; Romans 9:5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Who, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">being in very nature God<\/span>, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;\u00a0rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">being made in human likeness<\/span>.<\/em> &#8211; Philippians 2:6-7<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>[From] Simon Peter, &#8230;to those who through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the righteousness\u00a0of our God and Savior Jesus Christ<\/span>\u00a0have received a faith as precious as ours&#8230;<\/em> &#8211; 2 Peter 1:1<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI am the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Alpha and the Omega<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0says the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lord God<\/span>, \u201cwho is, and who was, and who is to come,\u00a0the Almighty.\u201d&#8230;.\u00a0To the angel of the church in Smyrna\u00a0write:\u00a0These are the words of him who is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">First and the Last<\/span>,\u00a0who <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">died and came to life again<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Revelation 1:8, 2:8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jesus-in-revelation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jesus-in-revelation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are many more passages in the New Testament to which we could point, but let&#8217;s now take a look at the witness of the Early Church, from the time of Jesus&#8217; Ascension to the Council of Nicea in AD 325.<\/p>\n<h2>Historical Jesus<\/h2>\n<p>For anyone who would deny that the Early Church thought that Jesus was God, I would invite that person to examine the letters of <a title=\"Who\u2019s your daddy? St. Ignatius of Antioch\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2010\/07\/26\/st-ignatius-of-antioch\/\">St. Ignatius<\/a>.\u00a0Ignatius was a disciple of John and was the Bishop of Antioch, who was taken in chains to Rome for execution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ignatius.jpg\" alt=\"St. Ignatius of Antioch\" width=\"402\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ignatius is my favourite Church Father (sorry Jerome!). He has so much passion, such a great a love of Christ! You can read all of his letters in the <a title=\"Patristics\" href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/notes\/patristics\/\">Patristics Section<\/a>\u00a0of this website, but here are a few choice quotations from <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/static\/ecf\/ignatius\/IgnatiusOfAntiochToTheRomans.pdf\">his letter to the Church at Rome<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 110<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>I salute you in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, &#8230;I wish abundance of happiness in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jesus Christ our God<\/span>\u00a0&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8230;[I]f I am truly found to be a Christian, then I may also be called one, and deemed faithful when I am no longer seen by this world.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Our God, Jesus Christ<\/span>, certainly is the more clearly seen now that He is with the Father.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Entreat Christ for me<\/span>, that by these instruments [of death] I may be found a sacrifice to God&#8230;\u00a0May nothing seen or unseen fascinate me, so that I may happily <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">make my way to Jesus Christ<\/span>! \u00a0&#8230; Permit me to be an imitator of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the passion of my\u00a0God<\/span>&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Remember in your prayers the Church in Syria, which now has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God for its shepherd<\/span>,\u00a0instead of me. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jesus Christ alone will be her Bishop<\/span>, together with your love<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Ignatius of Antioch, &#8220;Letter to the Romans&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is worth remembering that Ignatius wrote this as an old man, only ten years after the death of the last Apostle. This is clear evidence that the first Christians, the disciples of the Apostles, believed in the divinity of Christ, at least two hundred and fifteen years before Nicaea.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Patristic Witness<\/h3>\n<p>There are many, many other Church Father quotations that could be offered here in addition to the testimony of Ignatius, but again this would take an extraordinary amount of space. Instead I will simply offer a small sample of quotations arranged by approximate date:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 170<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>We do not act as fools, O Greeks, nor utter idle tales, when we say that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God was born in the form of a man<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Tatian the Syrian, &#8220;Address to the Greeks&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 170<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>The activities of Christ after his baptism&#8230;.gave indication and assurance to the world of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">deity hidden in his flesh<\/span>. Being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God and also perfect man<\/span>, he gave positive proofs of his two natures: of his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">deity<\/span>&#8230;and his humanity<\/em> &#8211; St. Anastasius of Sinai, &#8220;The Guide&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 189<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>&#8230;to raise up anew all flesh of the whole human race, in order that to Christ Jesus, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">our Lord, and God, and Saviour, and king<\/span>, according to the will of the invisible Father, &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">every knee should bow<\/span>, of things in heaven and things in earth, and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; St. Irenaeus of Lyons, &#8220;Against Heresies&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 195<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>[The] Word has now appeared as man, he alone being <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">both God and man<\/span>&#8230;<\/em> &#8211; St. Clement of Alexandria, &#8220;Exhortation to the Heathen&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 210<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>God alone is without sin. The only man who is without sin is Christ; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">for Christ is also God<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Tertullian of Carthage, &#8220;Treatise on the Soul&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 225<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>He in the last times, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">divesting himself [of his glory]<\/span>, became a man, and was incarnate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">although he was God<\/span>, and while made a man <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">remained the God that he was<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Origen of Alexandria, &#8220;Fundamental Doctrines&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 227<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>For <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Christ is the God above all<\/span>, and he has arranged to wash away sin from human beings, rendering the old man regenerate<\/em> &#8211; St. Hippolytus of Rome, &#8220;Refutation of All Heresies&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 235<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>We must therefore believe, according to the rule prescribed, in the Lord, the one true God, and consequently in him whom he has sent, Jesus Christ, who would not have linked himself to the Father if he had not wished to be understood <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">to be God also<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Novatian of Rome, &#8220;The Trinity&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 255<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>&#8230;[the heretic] denies that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Christ is God<\/span><\/em> &#8211; St. Cyprian of Carthage, &#8220;Letters&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 265<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>There is one <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lord<\/span>, &#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God from God<\/span>, image and likeness of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Deity<\/span>, &#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">power formative of the whole creation<\/span>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">immortal of immortal<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">eternal of eternal<\/span>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em>&#8211; St. Gregory Thaumaturgus, &#8220;Declaration of Faith&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 305<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>&#8220;Is that Christ of yours a god, then?&#8221; some raving, wrathful and exited man will say. &#8220;A God,&#8221; we will reply, &#8220;and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the God of the inner powers<\/span>&#8220;<\/em> &#8211; Arnobius of Sicca, &#8220;Against the Heathen&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 307<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>He became both the Son of God through the Spirit, and the Son of man through the flesh &#8211; that is, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">both God and man<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Lactantius, &#8220;Divine Institutes&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and finally, finally&#8230;we come to the Council of Nicaea:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>AD 325<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000\"> <em>We believe&#8230;in one <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lord<\/span> Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">only-begotten<\/span> of this Father, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">of the substance of the Father<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God from God<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">light from light<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">true God from true God<\/span>, begotten, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not made<\/span>, being of one substance with the Father. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">By whom all things were made<\/span>, both in heaven and in earth<\/em> &#8211; The Holy Catholic Church, &#8220;Nicene Creed&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So was the divinity of Christ invented by the Emperor Constantine at the Council of Niceae?
