It&#8217;s the <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;tossing of the garter&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0where, in front of all guests, the groom takes off his bride&#8217;s garter (sometimes using only with his teeth) and then tosses it to all the single guys, much in the same way as a bride throws a bouquet:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/garter.jpg\" alt=\"garter\" width=\"269\" height=\"224\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/the-garter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, maybe I&#8217;m overly sensitive or maybe it&#8217;s just because I&#8217;m English, but I think this is a custom which is both extremely tacky and\u00a0undignified:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHlLLQxuVyU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The Alternative<\/h3>\n<p>So with what do I think the <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;garter toss&#8221;<\/span><\/em> should be replaced? Well, what does Scripture say is the essence of being a husband?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Husbands, love your wives,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">just as Christ loved the church<\/span>&#8230;<\/em> &#8211; Ephesians 5:25<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved His Church. So how did Christ love?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>After that, he poured water into a basin and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">began to\u00a0wash\u00a0his disciples\u2019\u00a0feet<\/span>, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.<\/em> &#8211; John 13:5<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So with what should the garter toss be replaced?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/truthandcharity.net\/photo-the-new-chivalry\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/The-New-Chivalry-1024x790.png\" alt=\"The New Chivalry\" width=\"553\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">If I ever get married, there will not be a garter toss.<br \/>\nInstead, the future Mrs. B will have some extremely clean feet \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is one wedding &#8220;tradition&#8221; which I had never come across prior to coming to the United States.
