{"id":12107,"date":"2012-06-27T12:00:05","date_gmt":"2012-06-27T19:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=12107"},"modified":"2022-09-01T14:04:32","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T19:04:32","slug":"why-wouldnt-you-want-this-in-your-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/06\/27\/why-wouldnt-you-want-this-in-your-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"Why wouldn&#8217;t you want this in your Bible?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I originally had the following post scheduled for this weekend, but since yesterday\u00a0Joe posted an article entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/catholicdefense.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/defending-deuterocanon-book-by-book.html\">Defending the Deuterocanon Book by Book (Part 1)<\/a>,\u00a0I thought I&#8217;d post it a little earlier&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case you were unaware, Catholic Bibles are bigger than Protestant Bibles. Protestant Bibles are lacking the following books:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Tobit,\u00a0Judith,\u00a0Wisdom,\u00a0Sirach,\u00a0Baruch,\u00a01 Maccabees,\u00a02 Maccabees, &#8230;<br>&#8230;as well as three chapters of Daniel (3:24-90; 13; 14) and six chapters of Esther (10:14-16:14)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Occasionally I run across a non-Catholic who insists that this Deuterocanonical books (referred to as the\u00a0<em>&#8220;apocrypha&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0by Protestants)\u00a0should not be part of the Bible.\u00a0I don&#8217;t usually get too much into the apologetic arguments in favour of the inclusion of the Deuterocanon, although <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2014\/09\/06\/quick-apology-the-deuterocanon\/\">they certainly do exist<\/a>. Instead, I just invite the person simply to read them! I usually suggest that they start with Wisdom, Sirach and Tobit as they&#8217;re my favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before they do that though, I always invite them to start by the following\u00a0extract from Wisdom, to which I&#8217;ve added a series of underlined New Testament hyperlinks. Does any of this sound\u00a0strangely\u00a0familiar?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;the ungodly by their words and deeds summoned death&#8230; they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us lie in wait for the righteous man, because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2023:23-27,28&amp;version=NIV\">he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%207:19-20&amp;version=NIV\">he reproaches us for sins against the law<\/a>, and accuses us of sins against our training. He professes to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%208:55&amp;version=NIV\">knowledge of God<\/a>, and calls himself a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%203:18&amp;version=NIV\">child of the Lord<\/a>. He became to us a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%209:4&amp;version=NIV\">reproof<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%206:7-11&amp;version=NIV\">our thoughts<\/a>; the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2015:1-6&amp;version=NIV\">unlike that of others<\/a>,&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%203:1-6&amp;version=NIV\">his ways<\/a> are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%205:21-26&amp;version=NIV\">strange<\/a>. We are considered by him as something base,&nbsp;and he avoids our ways as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2011:39-41&amp;version=NIV\">unclean<\/a>; he calls the last end of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mt.%205:10&amp;version=NIV\">righteous happy<\/a>,&nbsp;and boasts that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2010:22&amp;version=NIV\">God is his father<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us see if his words are true, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2027:41-43&amp;version=NIV\">let us test what will happen at the end of his life<\/a>; for if the righteous man is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%205:25&amp;version=NIV\">God\u2019s son<\/a>, he will help him, and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+27:29&amp;version=NIV\">insult<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2027:26&amp;version=NIV\">torture<\/a>, that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+23:34&amp;version=NIV\">forbearance<\/a>.
