{"id":12100,"date":"2012-06-20T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2012-06-20T19:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?p=12100"},"modified":"2015-03-19T15:33:03","modified_gmt":"2015-03-19T22:33:03","slug":"called-sanctified-and-sent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/2012\/06\/20\/called-sanctified-and-sent\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Lectionary: Called, sanctified and sent"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist: 24th June, 2012<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Young-John-the-Baptist.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-12124\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Young-John-the-Baptist.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After being\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">fearfully, wonderfully made&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color: #993300\">knit&#8230;in [his] mother&#8217;s womb&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, we read in this week&#8217;s Gospel of how Elizabeth gave birth to a son and how he was named\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;John&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a solemnity again! This week we celebrate the birth\u00a0(<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;nativity&#8221;<\/em><\/span>) of\u00a0the one who would be the herald of the coming Messiah, John the Baptist:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>In those days came John the Baptist, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">preaching<\/span> in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">wilderness of Judea<\/span>, &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand<\/span>.&#8221; For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The voice of one <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">crying in the wilderness<\/span>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Prepare the way<\/span> of the Lord, make his paths straight&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Now John wore a garment of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">camel&#8217;s hair<\/span>, and a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">leather belt<\/span> around his waist; and his food was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">locusts<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">wild honey<\/span>. Then went out to him <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jerusalem<\/span> and all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Judea<\/span> and all the region about the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jordan<\/span>, and they were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">baptized<\/span> by him in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">river Jordan<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">confessing their sins<\/span><\/em>. &#8211; Matthew 3:1-6<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As we celebrate Mass this week, let us pray for courage to step out boldly as prophets, to speak truth to our world and to prepare the way of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The baptized have become &#8220;living stones&#8221; to be &#8220;built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood.&#8221; By <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Baptism<\/span> they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">prophetic<\/span> and royal <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">mission<\/span>&#8230; &#8220;[They] must <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">profess<\/span> before men the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">faith<\/span> they have received from God through the Church&#8221; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">participate in the apostolic and missionary activity<\/span> of the People of God.<\/em> &#8211; Catechism of the Catholic Church, Paragraphs\u00a01268 and 1270\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading I: Isaiah 49:1-6<\/h3>\n<p>Our First Reading from Isaiah is the beginning of the second of the <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Suffering Servant&#8221;<\/em><\/span> song. This Reading primarily refers to the Messiah, but it could easily be applied to the Messiah&#8217;s forerunner, John. Therefore, in the commentary I&#8217;ll point out how this passage is fulfilled for Jesus and how it is fulfilled for John.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Hear me, O coastlands, listen, O distant peoples. The LORD called me from birth, from my mother&#8217;s womb he gave me my name. He made of me a sharp-edged sword and concealed me in the shadow of his arm. He made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me. You are my servant, he said to me, Israel, through whom I show my glory.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength, yet my reward is with the LORD, my recompense is with my God. For now the LORD has spoken\u00a0who formed me as his servant from the womb, that Jacob may be brought back to him and Israel gathered to him; and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD, and my God is now my strength! It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This passage is typically applied to the Messiah. In what way could it be applied to John the Baptist?<\/li>\n<li>Who is speaking in this passage?<\/li>\n<li>When does the servant say he was called?<\/li>\n<li>What does the servant say God has done for him? What does this mean?<\/li>\n<li>How does the servant view his ministry? What is important to him?<\/li>\n<li>What does God say to His servant at the end of this passage?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Hear me, O coastlands, listen, O distant peoples.\u00a0<\/em><em>The LORD called me from birth, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Lord called His servant from the very beginning:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong><strong>1. Baptist:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son&#8230;&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Luke 1:13<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>2. Jesus:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"> <em>&#8220;You will conceive and give birth to a son&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Luke 1:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8230;<em>from my mother&#8217;s womb he gave me my name.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Both Jesus and the Baptist were named beforehand:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>1<strong>. Baptist:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;you are to call him John&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Luke 1:13<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>2. Jesus:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;you are to call him Jesus&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Luke 1:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This description is actually very similar to the description of two other Biblical characters:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>3. Jeremiah:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; i appointed you as a prophet to the nations&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Jeremiah 1:5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>4. St. Paul:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>But when God, who set me apart from my mother&#8217;s womb and called me by his grace&#8230;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Galatians\u00a01:15<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The fact that God calls people &#8220;from the womb&#8221; demonstrates His\u00a0foreknowledge\u00a0and plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He made of me a sharp-edged sword&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The NAB translation is rather inadequate here. More literal translations render this verse as <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;He made my mouth like a sharpened sword&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. God gives His servant the prophetic ability to speak the word of God:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Take&#8230;the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">sword of the Spirit<\/span>, which is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">word of God<\/span><\/em> &#8211; Ephesians 6:17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For the word of God is alive and active. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Sharper than any double-edged sword<\/span>, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart<\/em> &#8211; Hebrews 4:12<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Both Jesus and John proclaim the word of God:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>1. \u00a0Baptist:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em> In those days John the Baptist\u00a0came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>and saying, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Repent, for the kingdom of heaven\u00a0has come near<\/span>.\u201d<\/em> \u00a0&#8211; Matthew 3:1-3<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>2. Jesus:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em> From that time on Jesus began to preach,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Repent, for the kingdom of heaven\u00a0has come near.<\/span>\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Matthew 4:17<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>&#8230;and concealed me in the shadow of his arm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This means he afford&#8217;s God&#8217;s protection and intimacy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The servant is protected by God in His quiver and is also a means of\u00a0delivering divine judgement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>1. \u00a0Baptist:<\/strong><em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">Confessing their sins, they were baptized by [John] in the Jordan River. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: \u201cYou\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">brood of vipers<\/span>! Who warned you to flee from\u00a0the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">coming wrath<\/span>?\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Produce\u00a0fruit<\/span>\u00a0in keeping with repentance.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u00a0 &#8211; Matthew 3:6-8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>2. Jesus:<\/strong><em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">You\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">brood of vipers<\/span>,\u00a0how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks\u00a0what the heart is full of.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>A good man\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">brings good things<\/span>\u00a0out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">brings evil things<\/span>\u00a0out of the evil stored up in him.\u00a0But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">day of judgment<\/span>\u00a0for every empty word they have spoken.\u00a0For by your words you will be\u00a0acquitted, and by your words you will be\u00a0condemned.\u201d &#8211; Matthew 12:34-37<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>You are my servant, he said to me, Israel, through whom I show my glory.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The servant is the &#8220;ideal&#8221; personification of Israel. However, whereas Israel was unfaithful, God&#8217;s servant shall be faithful. Both Jesus and John were faithful to the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength, yet my reward is with the LORD, my recompense is with my God. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">At times it will appear as though the servant has laboured in vain:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>1. Baptist:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u00a0[Herod] ordered that&#8230;John beheaded\u00a0in the prison<\/em> &#8211; Matthew 14:9<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><strong>2. Jesus:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked\u00a0him\u00a0among themselves. \u201cHe saved others,\u201d they said, \u201cbut he can\u2019t\u00a0save\u00a0himself!&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Mark 15:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">However, the servant looks to God for approval from the Lord, rather than man, much like the Apostle Paul:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I care very little if I am judged by you<\/span> or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">It is the Lord who judges me<\/span><\/em> &#8211; 1 Corinthians 4:3-4<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">I think this is a very difficult lesson to learn in ministry. We so easily care about what other people think and about the perception of success. As hard as it is to actually do, we should care more about what God thinks than what other people think.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For now the LORD has spoken\u00a0who formed me as his servant from the womb, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">We find this language again in this week&#8217;s Psalm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;that Jacob may be brought back to him and Israel gathered to him; &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The servant is to draw the people back to God. In the original context, this would have referred to the gathering together of God&#8217;s people after the Babylonian captivity. However, if we view this in light of the New Testament, this refers to mankind&#8217;s freedom from the captivity of sin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD, and my God is now my strength! <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The servant draws his strength from God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The mission will extend to include all nations, for this was the promise given to Abraham:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">all peoples<\/span> on earth will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">blessed<\/span> through you<\/em> &#8211; Genesis 12:3<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This verse from Isaiah is sometimes known as the <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Great Commission of the Old Testament&#8221;<\/span><\/em> since it bears a strong comparison to the Great Commission given by Jesus to His Apostles in the New Testament:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ends of the earth<\/span>&#8220;<\/em> &#8211; Acts 1:8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Therefore this passage also points towards the inclusion of the Gentiles into the covenant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Responsorial Psalm:\u00a0Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15<\/h3>\n<p>This is one of my favourite psalms. It is a petition to the Lord to examine the life and soul of the psalmist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. (14) I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>O LORD, you have probed me, you know me:\u00a0you know when I sit and when I stand;\u00a0you understand my thoughts from afar.\u00a0My journeys and my rest you scrutinize,\u00a0with all my ways you are familiar.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Truly you have formed my inmost being;\u00a0you knit me in my mother&#8217;s womb.\u00a0I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made;\u00a0wonderful are your works.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>My soul also you knew full well;\u00a0nor was my frame unknown to you\u00a0When I was made in secret,\u00a0when I was fashioned in the depths of the earth.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How does the psalmist view Himself? Why?<\/li>\n<li>What does the psalmist invite the Lord to do?<\/li>\n<li>What does the psalmist say about his calling? What does this say about himself and God?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. (14) I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The psalmist marvels at the work of God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>O LORD, you have probed me, you know me:\u00a0you know when I sit and when I stand;\u00a0you understand my thoughts from afar.\u00a0My journeys and my rest you scrutinize,\u00a0with all my ways you are familiar.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The psalmist declares that the Lord knows everything about him. Nothing can be hidden from the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Truly you have formed my inmost being;\u00a0you knit me in my mother&#8217;s womb.\u00a0I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made;\u00a0wonderful are your works.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Because God made us, He knows us through and through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">God does not make junk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>My soul also you knew full well;\u00a0nor was my frame unknown to you\u00a0When I was made in secret,\u00a0when I was fashioned in the depths of the earth.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">God knows both soul and body. There is no part of me the Lord does not know.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: Acts 13:22-26<\/h3>\n<p>The setting for our Second Reading this week is a Synagogue in Pisidia. What question do they ask?<\/li>\n<li>What is the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;manifestation&#8221;<\/span><\/em> referred to at the end of the passage?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child\u00a0she gave birth to a son.\u00a0<\/em><em>Her neighbors and relatives heard\u00a0that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,\u00a0and they rejoiced with her.\u00a0<\/em><em>When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It was traditional to circumcise and name the male child on the\u00a0eighth\u00a0day after birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>On the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">eighth day<\/span>\u00a0the boy is to be\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">circumcised<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8211;\u00a0Leviticus 12:3<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This\u00a0signified the child&#8217;s entrance into the covenant of Israel:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then God said to Abraham, \u201cAs for you, you must keep my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">covenant<\/span>,\u00a0you and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">your descendants after you<\/span> for the generations to come.\u00a0This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Every male among you shall be circumcised<\/span>.\u00a0You are to undergo circumcision,\u00a0and it will be the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">sign of the covenant between me and you<\/span>.\u00a0For the generations to come\u00a0every male among you who is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">eight days old<\/span> must be circumcised&#8230; My <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">covenant in your flesh<\/span> is to be an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">who has not been circumcised<\/span>\u00a0in the flesh, will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cut off from his people<\/span>;\u00a0he has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">broken my covenant<\/span>.\u00a0\u201d<\/em> &#8211; Genesis 17:9-14<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">St. John Chrysostom&#8217;s explains how circumcision is fulfilled:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The rite of circumcision was first <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">delivered to Abraham<\/span> as a sign of distinction, that the race of the Patriarch might be preserved in unmixed purity, and so might be able to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">obtain the promises<\/span>. But now that the promise of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the covenant is fulfilled<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the sign attached to it is removed<\/span>. So then through Christ circumcision ceased, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">baptism came in its place<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">To be clear, the child is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_the_Baptist\">John the Baptist<\/a>, not <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_the_Apostle\">John the Apostle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">What a surprise! People other than the parents want to name the child&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;.but his mother said in reply,\u00a0&#8220;No. He will be called John.&#8221;\u00a0But they answered her,\u00a0&#8220;There is no one among your relatives who has this name.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It was a common practice of the day to name a son after his father. The Jewish historian Josephus confirms this practice (Life, 1).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The name <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;John&#8221;<\/span><\/em> means <span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;The Lord is\u00a0gracious&#8221; <\/span>and St. John Chrysostom saw great meaning in the choice of moniker for his namesake:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>But the name <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">John<\/span> is also interpreted the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">grace of God<\/span>. Because then <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">by the favor of Divine grace not by nature<\/span>, Elisabeth <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">conceived<\/span> this son, they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">engraved the memory<\/span> of the benefit on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">name<\/span> of the child.<\/em> &#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The fact that they <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;made signs&#8221;<\/span><\/em> suggests that\u00a0Zechariah\u00a0was deaf as well as mute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He asked for a tablet&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A wooden board covered with wax. He no longer doubts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Rightly also, from that moment was his tongue loosed for that which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">unbelief had bound<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">faith set free<\/span>. Let us then also believe, in order that our tongue, which has been bound by the chains of unbelief, may be loosed by the voice of reason<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Ambrose<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The birth of John ushered in a new era:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Now in an allegory, the celebration of John\u2019s birth was the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">beginning of the grace of the New Covenant<\/span>. His neighbors and kinsfolk had rather give him the name of his father than that of John. For the Jews, who by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">observance of the Law were united to him as it were by ties of kindred<\/span>, chose rather to follow the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">righteousness which is the Law<\/span>, than receive the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">grace of faith<\/span>. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>But the name of John, (i.e. the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">grace of God<\/span>), his mother in word, his father in writing, suffice to announce, for both the Law itself as well as the Psalms and the Prophecies, in the plainest language foretell the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">grace of Christ<\/span>; and that ancient priesthood, by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">foreshadowing<\/span> of its ceremonies and sacrifices, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">bears testimony to the same<\/span>. And well does Zacharias speak on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">eighth day<\/span> of the birth of his child, for by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">resurrection of the Lord<\/span>, which took place on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">eighth day<\/span>, i.e. the day after the sabbath, the hidden secrets of the legal priesthood were revealed.<\/em> &#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and he spoke blessing God<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The first thing he does is bless God. This blessing is omitted in our Gospel Reading, but it&#8217;s beautiful. It is the canticle prayed every evening in the Liturgy of the Hours:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Blessed be the Lord,\u00a0The God of Israel;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">He has come to His people and set them free.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Born of the house of His servant David.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Through His holy prophets He promised of old<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">That He would save us from our enemies,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">From the hands of all who hate us.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">He promised to show mercy to our fathers<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">And to remember His holy Covenant.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">This was the oath He swore to our father Abraham:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">To set us free from the hands of our enemies,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Free to worship Him without fear,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">Holy and righteous in His sight<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">All the days of our life.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">You, My child shall be called<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">The prophet of the Most High,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">For you will go before the Lord to prepare His way, <\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">To give his people knowledge of salvation<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">By the forgiveness of their sins.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">In the tender compassion of our Lord<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">The dawn from on high shall break upon us,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">to shine on those who dwell in darkness<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">And the shadow of death,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">And to guide our feet into the way of peace.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then fear came upon all their neighbors,\u00a0and all these matters were discussed\u00a0throughout the hill country of Judea.\u00a0All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,\u00a0&#8220;What, then, will this child be?&#8221;\u00a0For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The friends and relatives knew that something important was afoot:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>As at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">silence<\/span> of Zacharias the people marveled, so likewise when <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he spoke<\/span>. Hence it is said, &#8220;And fear came upon all&#8221;; that from these two circumstances all might believe there was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">something great in the child that was born<\/span>. But all these things were ordained, to the end that he who was to bear witness of Christ might also be esteemed trustworthy<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Theophyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">John is to fulfil the words of the Prophet Malachi:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cI will send my\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">messenger<\/span>,\u00a0who will\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">prepare the way\u00a0before me<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; Malachi 3:1; 4:6<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">There is then a break in the text and we jump ahead to verse 80. We skip over Zechariah&#8217;s Canticle (see above).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>The child grew and became strong in spirit,\u00a0<em>and he was in the desert&#8230;<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">John&#8217;s parents were old even at the time of his birth. They probably died while he was young. The Church Fathers describe his time in the desert beautifully:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The future preacher of repentance, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">that he might the more boldly reclaim his hearers from the allurements of the world<\/span>, passes the first part of his life in the deserts.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Many wax strong in the flesh, but\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the wrestler of God must be strengthened by the Spirit<\/span>\u00a0that he may crush the wisdom of the flesh. He retires therefore to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">escape the noise of cities<\/span>, and the thronging of the people. For it follows, &#8220;And he was in the deserts&#8221;. Where the air is purer, the sky more clear, and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">God a closer friend<\/span>, that as the time had not yet arrived for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">his baptism and preaching<\/span>, he might have leisure for\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">praying<\/span>, and might hold\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">converse with the angels<\/span>, calling upon God and fearing Him, saying, &#8220;Behold, here am I&#8221;.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Origen<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Or, he was in the deserts that he might be brought up <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">beyond the reach of the malice of the multitude<\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">not be afraid of man<\/span>. For if he had been in the world, perchance he had been <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">corrupted by the friendship<\/span> and conversation of the world. And secondly, that he who was to preach Christ might also be esteemed trust-worthy. But <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">he was hid in the desert until it pleased God to show him forth<\/span> to the people of Israel<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Theophyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Some people have suggested that John joined the Essene community nearby at Qumran. This is speculation though.\u00a0(Here&#8217;s an interesting question: why did John the Baptist not become a priest? His father was a priest, so one would have expected him to become one as well. Instead, he goes into the desert. There are indications that the Qumran community had some opposition to the Temple. Could this be another argument in favour of John being an Essene?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;until the day\u00a0of his manifestation to Israel.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This was when John was about thirty. He\u00a0begins to preach\u00a0repentance\u00a0and announce the coming of the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">John becomes a figure of Elijah:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>He was a man with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">garment of hair<\/span> and with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">leather belt<\/span> around his waist<\/em> &#8211; 2 Kings 1:8<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">He draws people out of Jerusalem into the desert.
