Eat."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #888888\">Life continues to be a bit hectic so I&#8217;m afraid these notes will be rather brief again&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ: June 10th, 2012<\/h2>\n<p>This Sunday is the feast of <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Corpus Christi&#8221;<\/span><\/em> (Latin for <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Body of Christ&#8221;<\/span><\/em>), a feast which came about during the 13th Century. Our First Reading describes the institution of the Yahweh&#8217;s covenant with Israel through the Patriarch Moses. While instituting the Eucharist in our Gospel Reading, Jesus speaks about a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">new<\/span>\u00a0covenant in His blood. In the Second Reading we hear more about this covenant, brought about through Christ, our great High Priest.<\/p>\n<p>Every time we go to Mass we renew our covenant with the Lord. Let us approach the Eucharist this week mindful of this great covenant, purchased for us by the very blood of Christ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>In all He did from the Incarnation to the Cross, the end Jesus Christ had in mind was the gift of the Eucharist, <\/em><em>his personal and corporal union with each Christian through Communion. He saw in It the means of <\/em><em>communicating to us all the treasures of His Passion, all the virtues of His Sacred Humanity, and all the merits <\/em><em>of His Life.<\/em> -St. Peter Julian Eymard<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11927\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pope-benedict.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pope-benedict.jpg 450w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pope-benedict-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reading I: Exodus 24:3-8<\/h3>\n<p>The text for our First Reading comes just after the giving of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+20&amp;version=NIV\">Ten Commandments<\/a>, but before the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2032%20&amp;version=NIV\">incident with the Golden Calf<\/a>. Through His servant, Moses, the Lord enters into covenant with His people, Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">When Moses came to the people\u00a0and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD,\u00a0they all answered with one voice,\u00a0&#8220;We will do everything that the LORD has told us.&#8221;\u00a0Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and,\u00a0rising early the next day,\u00a0he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar\u00a0and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.\u00a0Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelites\u00a0to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls\u00a0as peace offerings to the LORD,\u00a0Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls;\u00a0the other half he splashed on the altar.\u00a0Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people,\u00a0who answered, &#8220;All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do.&#8221;\u00a0Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying,\u00a0&#8220;This is the blood of the covenant\u00a0that the LORD has made with you\u00a0in accordance with all these words of his.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11921\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/moses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/moses.jpg 468w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/moses-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the context of this Reading? Why are <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;young bulls&#8221;<\/span><\/em> killed? What is a <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;peace offering&#8221;<\/span><\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>What does Moses do with the blood? What does this represent?<\/li>\n<li>What do the people say?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>When Moses came to the people\u00a0and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Moses relays to the people of Israel all that the Lord had said to him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Hebrew behind\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;words&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;dabar&#8221;<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0a technical term used to describe covenant stipulations in the ancient Near East.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;words&#8221;<\/span><\/em> probably refer to the Ten Commandments (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2020:1-21&amp;version=NIV\">Exodus 20:1-21<\/a>) and the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;ordinances&#8221;<\/span><\/em> probably refer to the stipulations in the Book of the Covenant (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2021:1-23:19&amp;version=NIV\">Exodus 21:1-23:19<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;they all answered with one voice,\u00a0&#8220;We will do everything that the LORD has told us.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The people affirm that they will uphold their end of the bargain and\u00a0fulfill\u00a0the requirements of the covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">However, shortly afterwards they will abandon God and worship the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2032%20&amp;version=NIV\">Golden Calf<\/a>&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Word of God is now committed to writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and,\u00a0rising early the next day, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">I can&#8217;t read this without recalling that in the Early Church celebrated the Eucharist at sunrise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar\u00a0and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Moses assembles an altar and twelve pillars. \u00a0This idea is found elsewhere in Scripture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;and said to them, \u201cGo over before the ark of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0your God into the middle of the Jordan.\u00a0Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites&#8230;<\/em> &#8211; Joshua 4:5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones\u00a0they had taken out of the Jordan.<\/em> &#8211; 1 Kings 18:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Moses had setup a liturgical context in which God will confirm His covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelites\u00a0to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls\u00a0as peace offerings to the LORD, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Sacrifice is offered to God.\u00a0Before the priesthood of Aaron was established the priestly functions were performed by the elders or young men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;holocaust&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is a sacrifice which is completely offered to God through burning. We might see this spiritually as Israel offering of herself totally to God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;peace offering&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is sometimes known as a <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;fellowship offering&#8221;<\/span><\/em> and is a particular kind of sacrifice found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Leviticus%203:1-5&amp;version=NIV\">Leviticus 3:1-5<\/a>. Spiritually we might see this as symbolic of the covenant, that Israel is being brought back into right relationship with God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The blood is collected and divided into two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;the other half he splashed on the altar.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Half the blood is splashed on the altar, declaring that God will keep His side of the covenant. The remaining blood will be dealt with shortly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Taking the book of the covenant, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is most likely the contents of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2020:22-23:19&amp;version=NIV\">Exodus 20:22-23:19<\/a>, but probably also implies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2020:2-17&amp;version=NIV\">Exodus 20:2-17<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2023:20-33&amp;version=NIV\">Exodus 23:20-33<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;covenant&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is more than simply a contract. A covenant is a\u00a0solemn agreement which builds kinship bonds and forms family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;he read it aloud to the people,\u00a0who answered, &#8220;All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Moses declares the Word and the people declare their fidelity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Blood is sprinkled upon the people, declaring that they will keep\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">their<\/span>\u00a0side of the covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;saying,\u00a0&#8220;This is the blood of the covenant\u00a0that the LORD has made with you\u00a0in accordance with all these words of his.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Moses&#8217; words here should be extremely familiar to Catholics as they are the words of Christ at the Last Supper and the same words we hear at every Mass: <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;This is the blood of the covenant&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In fact, when you look at this Reading, doesn&#8217;t it bear many similarities with Mass? The word is proclaimed, an affirmation of faith is made, a sacrifice is made and blood is shared&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 116:12-13, 15-16, 17-18<\/h3>\n<p>The psalm this week is a song of thanksgiving and contains beautiful Eucharistic imagery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>R. I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">How shall I make a return to the LORD\u00a0for all the good he has done for me?\u00a0The cup of salvation I will take up,\u00a0and I will call upon the name of the LORD.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Precious in the eyes of the LORD\u00a0is the death of his faithful ones.\u00a0I am your servant, the son of your handmaid;\u00a0you have loosed my bonds.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,\u00a0and I will call upon the name of the LORD.\u00a0My vows to the LORD I will pay\u00a0in the presence of all his people.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What allusions to the Eucharist do you see in this psalm?<\/li>\n<li>What would the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;cup of salvation&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0originally have referred to? To what does it point?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><strong>R. I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In its original context this <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;cup of salvation&#8221;<\/span><\/em> would have referred to either the Passover cup or the cup of the &#8220;Thank Offering&#8221; (Leviticus 7:11-21).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The\u00a0fulfillment\u00a0of this verse is, of course, the cup of the Eucharist at the Last Supper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>How shall I make a return to the LORD\u00a0for all the good he has done for me?\u00a0<em>The cup of salvation I will take up,\u00a0and I will call upon the name of the LORD.<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The truth is that we really <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">can&#8217;t<\/span>\u00a0repay the Lord. What we can do, however, is respond in love to His goodness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Precious in the eyes of the LORD\u00a0is the death of his faithful ones.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Because the Lord sees my life as precious, I will praise him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>I am your servant, the son of your handm<\/em><\/span><em>aid;\u00a0you have loosed my bonds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This would have initially referred to the psalmist, but points to Christ, the\u00a0son of <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;the handmaid of the Lord&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Luke 1:38) offers himself in sacrifice on the cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,\u00a0and I will call upon the name of the LORD.\u00a0My vows to the LORD I will pay\u00a0in the presence of all his people.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This is what takes place at the Last Supper when Jesus takes the Passover cup and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;gave thanks&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, the Greek word for it is,\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;eucharisteo&#8221;<\/span>, <\/em>from which we get the word <em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;Eucharist&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;vows&#8221;<\/span><\/em> mentioned here to here refers to the promises to praise the Lord.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Reading II: Hebrews 9:11-15<\/h3>\n<p>It has been suggested that the book of Hebrews was written for Jerusalem priests who had converted to Christianity. Its central focus is that of Christ our the priesthood of Christ and the New Covenant He won for us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">Brothers and sisters:\u00a0When Christ came as high priest\u00a0of the good things that have come to be,\u00a0passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle\u00a0not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation,\u00a0he entered once for all into the sanctuary,\u00a0not with the blood of goats and calves<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">For if the blood of goats and bulls\u00a0and the sprinkling of a heifer&#8217;s ashes\u00a0can sanctify those who are defiled\u00a0so that their flesh is cleansed,\u00a0how much more will the blood of Christ,\u00a0who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God,\u00a0cleanse our consciences from dead works\u00a0to worship the living God.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant:\u00a0since a death has taken place for deliverance\u00a0from transgressions under the first covenant,\u00a0those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11920\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Christ-High-Priest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Christ-High-Priest.jpg 275w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Christ-High-Priest-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How is Jesus described?<\/li>\n<li>What is the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;tabernacle&#8221;<\/span><\/em> that Christ passes through?<\/li>\n<li>There are two kinds of <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;blood&#8221;<\/span><\/em> compared. What are they? How do they compare?<\/li>\n<li>What is obtained through Christ entering into the heavenly sanctuary with His blood?<\/li>\n<li>Who is the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;mediator of a new covenant&#8221;<\/span><\/em>? Why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commentary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Brothers and sisters:\u00a0When Christ came as high priest\u00a0of the good things that have come to be, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Christ is seen as the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;high priest&#8221;<\/span><\/em>. In the Catholic Church there is only one priest, Christ. All our priests simply <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">share<\/span> in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">His<\/span> priesthood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Even now also that Christ is close to us; He who prepared that table, Himself also consecrates it. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">For it is not man who makes the offerings to be the Body and Blood of Christ, but Christ who was crucified for us<\/span>. The words are spoken by the mouth of the Priest, and are consecrated by the power and the grace of God.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. John Chrysostom<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle\u00a0not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation, <\/em><em>he entered once for all into the sanctuary,\u00a0<em>not with the blood of goats and calves\u00a0but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;goats and calves&#8221;<\/span><\/em> refers to two different liturgical events:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">1. The <strong>ratification<\/strong> of the covenant with Moses on Sinai when <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;young calves&#8221;<\/span><\/em> were sacrificed (Exodus 24:5).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">2. The <strong>renewal<\/strong> of the covenant on the Day of Atonement when a goat would be sacrificed (Leviticus 16:15).\u00a0The High Priest entered into the Jerusalem Temple&#8217;s the Most Holy Place every a year after this sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In contrast, Christ entered\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;once for all&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0the heavenly\u00a0sanctuary with His own blood. His sacrifice was perfect and did not need to be repeated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For if the blood of goats and bulls\u00a0and the sprinkling of a heifer&#8217;s ashes\u00a0can sanctify those who are defiled\u00a0so that their flesh is cleansed, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The sprinkling of a red heifer&#8217;s ashes was required by Numbers 19:1-13 for the ceremonial cleansing of those who had come into contact with a corpse. This cleansing was external only and did not wash away sin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;how much more will the blood of Christ,\u00a0who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God,\u00a0cleanse our consciences from dead works\u00a0to worship the living God.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The author compares this purification with heifer ashes to the blood of Christ, noting how superior it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It is noted that Christ <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;offered himself&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, indicating that this was a sacrifice. Christ was the perfect offering as he was <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;unblemished&#8221;<\/span><\/em> through and through. This offering removes sin (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;cleanse our consciences from dead works&#8221;<\/span><\/em>) and gives supernatural life (<em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;to worship the living God&#8221;<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant:\u00a0since a death has taken place for deliverance\u00a0from transgressions under the first covenant,\u00a0those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus is the mediator of this new and superior covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">By the death of Christ we are delivered from our sins, from the consequences of the violation of the Law and allows us to receive the promises of God:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;The time is coming,&#8221; declares the Lord, &#8220;when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt&#8230; I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people&#8230;I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; Jeremiah 31:31-34<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26<\/h3>\n<p>This Gospel Reading should be familiar to us as we hear a portion of it at every Mass. The date is therefore 14th Nisan.\u00a0The feast \u00a0commemorated the salvation of the Israelites from Egypt in the time of Moses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Christ is the new Passover lamb and the Eucharist is the fulfillment of the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Unleavened Bread&#8221;<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Jesus&#8217; disciples said to him,\u00a0&#8220;Where do you want us to go\u00a0and prepare for you to eat the Passover?&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><em>He sent two of his disciples and said to them,\u00a0&#8220;Go into the city and a man will meet you,<\/em>\u00a0<em>carrying a jar of water.\u00a0Follow him.\u00a0Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,\u00a0&#8216;The Teacher says, &#8220;Where is my guest room<\/em>\u00a0<em>where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?&#8221;&#8216;\u00a0Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.\u00a0Make the preparations for us there.&#8221;\u00a0The disciples then went off, entered the city,\u00a0and found it just as he had told them;\u00a0and they prepared the Passover.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus demonstrates supernatural knowledge over coming events. God had even been preparing this Passover in the days of Moses.\u00a0Of course, Jesus knows what is going to happen even beyond the meal &#8211; He knows the Passion awaits<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>And it is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">proof of the presence of His divinity<\/span>, that in speaking with His disciples,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">He knows what is to take place elsewhere<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>He sends two of His disciples&#8230;to a man unknown to Him, implying by this that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">He might, if He had pleased, have avoided His Passion<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Theophyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;two&#8230;disciples&#8221;<\/span><\/em> were Peter and John (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2022:8&amp;version=NIV\">Luke 22:8<\/a>). The <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;preparations&#8221;<\/span><\/em>\u00a0to be made would have included preparation of the food: unleavened bread, wine, bitter herbs, sauce and lamb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The sight of <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;a man&#8230;carrying a jar of water&#8221;<\/span><\/em> would have been unusual as this was typically done by women. We may see a spiritual meaning in the <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;jar of water&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, a symbol of the baptism which is necessary prior to the receiving of the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">He who is baptized carries the pitcher of water<\/span>, and he who bears baptism upon him comes to his rest, if he lives according to his reason; and he obtains rest, as being in the house. Wherefore it is added, Follow him.<\/em> &#8211; Theophyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>While they were eating, &#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Eucharist took place as part of a larger meal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8230;he took bread, said the blessing,\u00a0broke it, gave it to them, and said,\u00a0&#8220;Take it; this is my body.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus now transforms the Passover into something new&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>When <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the\u00a0rites of the old Passover\u00a0were finished<\/span>, He\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">passed to the new<\/span>, in order, that is, to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">substitute\u00a0the Sacrament<\/span> of\u00a0His own Body and Blood, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">for the flesh and blood of the lamb<\/span>. Wherefore there follows: &#8220;And as they did eat, Jesus took bread&#8221;; that is, in order to show that He Himself is that person to whom the Lord swore, &#8220;You are a Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedec&#8221;. There follows: And blessed, and broke it.<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; St. Bede<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">It was this passage which caused the great argument between Luther and Zwingli, fathers of the Reformation. Luther (holding to a version of the Real\u00a0Presence) affirmed that Jesus is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">truly present<\/span> in the Eucharist, whereas Zwingli asserted that Jesus was only <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">symbolically<\/span>\u00a0present in the Eucharist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">In this text we find the same sequence found in the feeding of the multitude (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%206:41&amp;version=NIV\">Mark 6:41<\/a>):\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;took&#8230;bless[ed]&#8230;broke&#8230;gave&#8221;<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Jesus&#8217; actions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">signify the mystery of his Passion<\/span>. In breaking the bread, Christ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pre-enacts the breaking of his body on the Cross<\/span>, likewise as Jesus <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">gives himself voluntarily in the Last Supper<\/span>, so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">his Crucifxion will be a death he freely accepts<\/span>, not the end result of hostile forces beyond his control.<\/em> &#8211; St. Bede, In Marcum<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>The Eucharist is a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pledge and sign of heavenly glory<\/span>. While the sacrament is a true communion with Christ in the present, it points also to our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">perfect communion with him in eternity<\/span>. In heaven, the sacraments will give way to the saints&#8217; direct and unmediated union with the Trinity<\/em> &#8211; St. Thomas Aquinas, Office of the Adorable Sacrament<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them,\u00a0and they all drank from it.\u00a0He said to them,\u00a0&#8220;This is my blood of the covenant,\u00a0which will be shed for many&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Jesus repeats the formula with the cup. He then uses a word <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;covenant&#8221;<\/span>, <\/em>a word\u00a0which we do not find mentioned elsewhere in Jesus&#8217; ministry. His use of this word would have certainly have caught the Apostle&#8217;s attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">The Old Covenant was sealed through the blood, as is the New Covenant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">This blood is shed <span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;for many&#8221;<\/em><\/span>, which is a Semitic idiom which indicates a great number without restriction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;&#8230;Amen, I say to you,\u00a0I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine\u00a0until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Whenever Jesus says <em><span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Amen&#8221;<\/span><\/em>, He&#8217;s about to say something important&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>As if He had said, &#8220;I will not drink wine <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">until the resurrection<\/span>&#8220;; for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">He calls His resurrection the kingdom<\/span>, as He then reigned over death. But after His resurrection He ate and drank with His disciples, showing that it was He Himself who had suffered.
