Lent is over!&#8230;Easter is here!&#8230;does that mean that we can stop now?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/steak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>In centuries past<\/h2>\n<p>Christians have historically done penance on Fridays to remember our Lord&#8217;s Passion, as well as on Wednesdays to recall Judas&#8217; betrayal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8230;fast on [Wednesday] and [Friday]<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; The Didache (1st Century), Chapter 8<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What about now?<\/h2>\n<p>There has been some confusion over this subject in recent years, but Canon Law states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000\">The penitential days and times in the universal Church are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">every Friday of the whole year<\/span> and the season of Lent <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8211; Canon 1250<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, it&#8217;s clear that\u00a0every\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kfVsfOSbJY0\">Friday is a penitential day<\/a>. But\u00a0what kind of penance is required?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Abstinence from meat<\/span>, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence [from meat] and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Canon 1250<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday<\/span>. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday<\/em> &#8211; Canon 1251<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This shows that the default kind of penance given by the Church is\u00a0abstinence\u00a0from meat (as long as the Friday isn&#8217;t a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solemnity\">solemnity<\/a>\u00a0of the Church, <em><span style=\"color: #000080\">such as it is today<\/span><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>However, it is possible for the local bishops to request permission from the Holy See to adjust this (except for during Lent when abstinence is still required). This is\u00a0true in the case of the U.S. Bishops. They acquired\u00a0permission for U.S. Catholics to substitute\u00a0abstinence\u00a0from meat with some other kind penitential act of their choosing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11013\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Prayer_Fasting_Almsgiving.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Prayer_Fasting_Almsgiving.jpg 438w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Prayer_Fasting_Almsgiving-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, an alternative penance might include an extra rosary (prayer), limiting food during the day (fasting) or some kind of charitable donation or service (almsgiving). On the occasions when I forget that it&#8217;s Friday, it&#8217;s great to be able to make a\u00a0substitution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11012\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/substitution.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pleased that there is some leeway in the United States on the kind of penance to be observed, but I would encourage people to stick with the default penance of the Church:\u00a0abstinence\u00a0from meat.\u00a0Abstinence from meat has a long history in the Church, it marks you out as being Catholic and, c&#8217;mon, who doesn&#8217;t like fish?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/found_nemo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-11014\" src=\"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/found_nemo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/found_nemo.jpg 750w, https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/found_nemo-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the last six weeks Catholics have been abstaining from meat on Fridays as part of their Lenten observance.
