Last week at <a href=\"http:\/\/jp2group.wordpress.com\" target=\"_blank\">JP2<\/a>\u00a0I referred to this day as <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Maundy Thursday&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and was greeted with a number of confused looks. Apparently this moniker isn&#8217;t used that often in the United States&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The name <span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>&#8220;Maundy Thursday&#8221;<\/em><\/span>\u00a0comes from a verse in John&#8217;s Gospel.\u00a0The Latin translation in the Vulgate is as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mandatum<\/span> novum do vobis\u00a0ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Johannes XIII:XXXIV<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The word <em>&#8220;Maundy&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 is a corruption of the first\u00a0word in the above quotation. That word,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Mandatum&#8221;<\/span>, is the root\u00a0from which\u00a0we get the English words &#8220;mandate&#8221; and &#8220;mandatory&#8221;, terms\u00a0which we use to indicate\u00a0that something is required. This is because\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;Mandatum&#8221;<\/span> literally\u00a0means <span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8220;commandment&#8221;, as we can see from the translation of the previous\u00a0passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><em>\u201cA new <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">command<\/span> I give you: Love one another.
