Today is Holy Thursday<\/a>. Last week at JP2<\/a>\u00a0I referred to this day as “Maundy Thursday”<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and was greeted with a number of confused looks. Apparently this moniker isn’t used that often in the United States…<\/p>\n

The name “Maundy Thursday”<\/em><\/span>\u00a0comes from a verse in John’s Gospel.\u00a0The Latin translation in the Vulgate is as follows:<\/p>\n

“Mandatum<\/span> novum do vobis\u00a0ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos”<\/em>
\n–\u00a0Johannes XIII:XXXIV<\/span><\/p>\n

The word “Maundy”<\/em>\u00a0 is a corruption of the first\u00a0word in the above quotation. That word,\u00a0“Mandatum”<\/span>, is the root\u00a0from which\u00a0we get the English words “mandate” and “mandatory”, terms\u00a0which we use to indicate\u00a0that something is required. This is because\u00a0“Mandatum”<\/span> literally\u00a0means “commandment”, as we can see from the translation of the previous\u00a0passage:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA new command<\/span> I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another”<\/em>
\n– John 13:34<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the passage which we will hear read at Mass today and which is then enacted by the priest, where he washes the feet of twelve of his parishioners, in imitation of Christ washing the feet of the Twelve:<\/p>\n
