{"id":8326,"date":"2011-12-11T08:07:57","date_gmt":"2011-12-11T15:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/?page_id=8326"},"modified":"2014-12-17T16:24:52","modified_gmt":"2014-12-17T23:24:52","slug":"chapter-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/restlesspilgrim.net\/blog\/commentary\/1-peter\/chapter-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.\u00a0<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,\u00a0<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Exhortation to growth<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Living Stone and a Chosen People<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0As you come to him, the living Stone\u2014rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him\u2014\u00a0<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house<sup>[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20peter%202&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-30405a\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">a<\/span><\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus spoke of Himself as the stone which the builders rejected. Peter builds upon this idea, describing the Church as a Temple made out of Christians.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0For in Scripture it says:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u201cSee, I lay a stone in Zion,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> a chosen and precious cornerstone,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> and the one who trusts in him<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> will never be put to shame.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u201cThe stone the builders rejected<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> has become the cornerstone,\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0and,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">\u201cA stone that causes people to stumble<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> and a rock that makes them fall.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus quoted this same passage.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\">They stumble because they disobey the message\u2014which is also what they were destined for.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God\u2019s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.\u00a0<sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Church is the new Israel, with every member priests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again pick up this theme of pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0Submit yourselves for the Lord\u2019s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,<sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.\u00a0<sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0For it is God\u2019s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.\u00a0<sup>16<\/sup>\u00a0Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God\u2019s slaves.\u00a0<sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>18<\/sup>\u00a0Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.\u00a0<sup>19<\/sup>\u00a0For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.\u00a0<sup>20<\/sup>\u00a0But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Peter explains Christian interaction with secular authority.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>21<\/sup>\u00a0To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>22<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cHe committed no sin,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #993300\"> and no deceit was found in his mouth.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993300\"><sup>23<\/sup>\u00a0When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.
