The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34739\" class=\"text 1John-3-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1 chapter-1\">John speaks about the Christian&#8217;s relationship to God and the world. \u00a0His words here are also reminiscent of Jesus&#8217; words about a servant being no greater than the master.<\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1 chapter-1\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34739\" class=\"text 1John-3-2\">Beloved, we are God\u2019s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34740\" class=\"text 1John-3-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"top-1 chapter-1\">John speaks mysteriously about the future.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34741\" class=\"text 1John-3-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Every one who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34742\" class=\"text 1John-3-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34743\" class=\"text 1John-3-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>No one who abides in him sins;\u00a0no one who sins has either seen him or known him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34744\" class=\"text 1John-3-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, as he is righteous. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34745\" class=\"text 1John-3-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34746\" class=\"text 1John-3-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>No one born of God commits sin; for God\u2019s<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em;line-height: 22px;vertical-align: top\">[<a style=\"color: #993300\" title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20John%203&amp;version=RSVCE#fen-RSVCE-34746b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup> nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is\u00a0born of God. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34747\" class=\"text 1John-3-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>John returns to the relationship between sin, God and our neighbour.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34748\" class=\"text 1John-3-11\" style=\"color: #993300\">Love One Another<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span class=\"text 1John-3-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34749\" class=\"text 1John-3-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>and not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother\u2019s righteous. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>John returns to the subject of loving our neighbour. He draws from the Old Testament to explain it further.<\/p>\n<p>John bingo: <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;beginning&#8221;<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;love&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34750\" class=\"text 1John-3-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34751\" class=\"text 1John-3-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love remains in death. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34752\" class=\"text 1John-3-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34753\" class=\"text 1John-3-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34754\" class=\"text 1John-3-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>But if any one has the world\u2019s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God\u2019s love abide in him? <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34755\" class=\"text 1John-3-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Continuation of the explanation concerning God and the world and imitation of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>John Bingo: <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;death&#8221;<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;life&#8221;<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;love&#8221;<\/span> (x4), <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;abiding&#8221;<\/span> (x2), <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;children&#8221;<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #993300\">&#8220;truth&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34756\" class=\"text 1John-3-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34757\" class=\"text 1John-3-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34758\" class=\"text 1John-3-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God;<\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34759\" class=\"text 1John-3-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34760\" class=\"text 1John-3-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. <\/span><span id=\"en-RSVCE-34761\" class=\"text 1John-3-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them.
